- Towing a trailer for 2500 miles from NE Ohio to SW Florida and back. It requires more charging stops and a trailer makes it harder to align the car with the charger. Part 1 of 2.

Thanks for sharing your experience! A trip like this may very well be in my future ^_^.
Hugely helpful. Thank you.
I just bought a Scamp 13 with an air conditioner and an awning. Just under 2k lbs. At 60/65 I was able to average 380 W/mi on a hot Florida afternoon. Also pulled into the Wawa at Davenport without having to unhook.
Not bad
@StuartBB seriously? Would that be over 230 miles with a LRMY?!
Thanks, very informative.
Originally from NE Ohio and Florida so I could relate 100%.
Now driving a Model Y from NC to Sarasota about every 5 weeks so I know most all of the stops you made.
Amazing the cost is only about $50 each way.
Considering a light weight travel trailer and have been curious about range, at this stage I will slow travel for the most part anyway.
Stay safe and enjoy your travels.
If you are looking for a lightweight camper, I recommend a Casita. We are looking to purchase one ourselves.
@@EHermes Yes, their quality is great. I'm considering the Gulf Stream Vista 19 csk. I like the space and floor plan, also pretty aerodynamic. Enjoying your videos, look forward to more.
Thank you for the excellent video! May I ask what ball mount you used? More specifically, do you know what rise there was on the ball mount?
This U-Haul trailer dates from the 1970s/80s. ;-)
Thanks for the video. Mode data would be helpful. Next time maybe go into the trip screen at each stop and show the distance and WH/mile and also discuss the speeds you were traveling at.
I generally drove the speed limit or five (maybe occasionally 10) miles over. There is a part two video of the return trip that I did a better job of tracking the data.
Speed is the biggest range killer when towing, doing 70 spanked your battery, aim for 55 and get behind a lorry for some drafting, you'll be amazed at the extra range you get.
For sure. I was trying to maintain normal highway driving speed.
Which hitch adapter did you purchase to tow that trailer
I'm sorry, but I do not understand your question. I purchased the hitch receiver from Tesla when I ordered the car. What adapter are you referring to?
Damn I’m not looking forward to towing a popup trailer. One hour charges 😢
Towing is hard, even with my F-150 Lightning. A pop up is the best case however as wind resistance is the biggest problem.
What was the average Watt/Hour number pulling the trailer. That's the most Important measurement of efficiency. And at what speed did you average?
Extrapolating your comments about miles and seeing your speedometer it would appear that you were driving approximately 65 to 70 miles an hour in your average efficiency was roughly 500 W hours per mile.
You are about right on the speed; i believe the watt hours per mile were closer to 600.
@@EHermes Ok, at 500 you would be getting 1/2 your battery range, about 150 miles. At 600 you would drop to about 120 miles.
I love both my 3 and Y but it is depressing on the towing.
Thanks so much for this video. I’m planning a trip from Orlando to Arlington Virginia to move my daughter.
I was thinking I might need the 6X12 trailer and was looking for Towing information for that when I found your videos.
I watched both of your trip videos… And I was really curious on your average watt hours per mile, which was 500. You mentioned in your other comment that you drove at 75 miles an hour, which is helpful.
I Plugged 500wh/mi into abetterrouteplanner which really helps put my mind at ease. Basically it’s showing 850 mile one-way trip, 16 hours travel time, and about $70 worth of super charging. My return trip with our trailer will obviously be a little quicker, and cost a little less.
I was you how autopilot worked. At first I wasn’t sure if you used it, but I noticed on one of your screenshots that you had it on.
When we’re looking at options of renting a moving van, considering gasoline, and a return flight… I really think I’ll take that extra money and put it towards a hitch instead, which I would likely use in the future. I know people will say ‘isn’t your time worth something…’. At the moment, I’ve got more time than I do money! Plus it will be a fun adventure with my daughter.
Again, thanks for the video!! I’m subscribed.
Joe, thank you for your kind words. In order to use Autopilot you have to disable trailer mode. I’m sure the 6 x 12 will handle a little bit differently, but it is still a joy to drive. Good luck on your trip!
What was the loaded trailer weight?
About 1000 pounds total.
From what I have seen, aerodynamics are just as important or more than weight with electric.
@@ELCEV Agreed
Having auto steer on while pulling, the trailer is not a wise ideal,😮
Kept hands on wheel.

Why didn’t you travel in daylight so you wouldn’t have to run those annoying flashers for hundreds of miles ?
The way my schedule worked out I had to leave at night. You think it was annoying on the video, you should have been in the car.
