    nice video. can you turn on autopilot(acc + auto steering wheel) with your trainler?

    • @noahvonborstel4231
      @noahvonborstel4231  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks! You can’t use autopilot with a trailer connected. It’s disabled when it senses a trailer is plugged in. The vehicle automatically goes into trailer mode when you plug in the 7 pin adapter. Everything else works normally though.

  • @cherrytreepermaculture756

    Do you find that regen braking triggers the Curt Echo to apply the trailer brakes?

    • @noahvonborstel4231
      @noahvonborstel4231  Před rokem +1

      It used to when I first started towing but it seems like some kind of update might have fixed that. I use the setup all the time with my dump bed trailer and flat bed in this video. From what I can tell it doesn't trigger the echo until I touch the brakes now. I watch the screen to see as I let off the pedal if the echo is braking, it's easy to see. When I let off the pedal quickly it seems the deceleration is all regen, and it's amazingly effective. I prefer towing with my Model Y over my 2017 Ford Expedition and 2005 Chevy Avalanche 2500. It pulls more effortlessly, and the one pedal driving is killer... Additionally, the lower/more even weight distribution seems to keep my Model Y more planted.

      Yes, I gain lots of range on grades going down and don’t have to use any vehicle or trailer brakes. From top to bottom on a 3-6 mile grade I might gain as many miles or even double back in range by the bottom.

    Hello everyone that was an excellent video have a question if people could please chime in. I currently drive a Tacoma pick up truck I sell windows it’s my small business at any given time I have 20 pieces of glass in my truck which Weighs maybe four or 500 pounds I’m thinking of getting a lightweight aluminum open trailer which may weigh 500 pounds so in total I thousand or 1200 pounds to tow behind a model Y what kind of range do believe I’ll get that live in Ontario it’s mostly flat land in Highway driving. I believe I currently drive between 250 and 350 km per day anyways the gas is killing me with the Tacoma I’m up around $350 a week in gas it’s getting insane I need the Tesla truck but in the meantime for the next two or three years while waiting wondering if a model Y and a small open trailer would do the trick to replace my Tacoma?? Thanks guys

      @noahvonborstel4231  Před 2 lety

      Hello Ryan, good to hear from you. Based on the weight and size you are describing I think you’d still get 150miles plus of range. So I think you could count on losing half of your range to the extra weight. It would completely replace your Tacoma without issue and probably save you about $250-$300 a week. Do it!

    I thought the max towing capacity of the Model Y is 3,500 lbs. And you were towing 4,260? And if 10% of that 4,260 was the tongue weight (426 lbs) that would exceed the Model Y's 350 lb max hitch weight. Did you modifying something to be able to do this?

      @noahvonborstel4231  Před rokem

      I think that’s a little far based on the weights you are mentioning. I think 120miles per leg might be max. I’m not sure about the wind drag, mine is extreme with the load I pull. Worst case scenario if you try is a super slow pull with flashers on. I’d say it’s a no go but I’d be super impressed if you pulled it off.

    Nice video - thanks for posting. Have a boat + trailer equaling ~3,900 lb. total and would love to buy a Model Y, but need to be able to tow this load with it. I see that you prove it can be done -- but concerned about wear and tear on the vehicle. I spoke with Tesla technical advisors and they said going over 3,500 lb. can stress rear suspension, etc. Have you seen any negatives on the vehicle after towing your load? Any advice is helpful. Thank you.

    • @noahvonborstel4231
      @noahvonborstel4231  Před 3 lety +1

      I tow 4,000lbs or thereabouts regularly and have for over 10,000 miles. If you balance the load so that you don’t have too much tongue weight and make sure not to accelerate with a full load like you are in drag race then I think you’ll be fine. Also, use some kind of brake controller. I treat my Tesla Y nice but use it very hard and it has responded well.

      @@thebossut I use the Echo Bluetooth brake controller. It’s highly recommended, I’ve used it for a year and love the device. Acceleration boost isn’t needed. I towed before I had that option and it performed just the same in range and overall performance. I just make sure to eyeball my load very evenly and look at my car before I tie everything down. You can tell if the load is too far forward or back when you look at everything when it’s onboard. Most RV’s are well balanced and don’t need much help. My flatbed with custom loads needs more attention.

    Are those the 20" induction wheels? Doesn't that reduce the towing capacity down?

    • @noahvonborstel4231
      @noahvonborstel4231  Před 3 lety +1

      Those are the 20” induction wheels. They don’t reduce towing. There was a weird note on Tesla’s website when the tow package first came out about these wheels and a lower towing number. They revised that quickly and there is no difference is what each tire size allows for max tow rating.

    What would be the approximate cost of the power consumption done and comparison to gas consumption?

    • @noahvonborstel4231
      @noahvonborstel4231  Před 3 lety +1

      The vehicle has a 75kWh battery and I’ll use almost all of that on one trip. Most people here in the Pacific Northwest pay between 9-13.5 cents per kWh for power. That means I pay about $10.12 per charge. Superchargers cost about 24-28 cents per kilowatt hour if you use those on a trip. Same trip with my 2017 Ford Expedition Eco-Boost towing the same payload used to consume about 10 gallons of unleaded fuel at about $2.50 per gallon. So I regularly spent 25 dollars to tow what my Model Y tows for under $10.

    • @phamnuwen9442
      @phamnuwen9442 Před 3 lety +1

      @@noahvonborstel4231 Yeah, buy the Expedition is a much larger and more capable vehicle in terms of cargo and towing. It's also rated for the load and legal. And a longer trip would mean supercharging for the Y which would bring the energy costs per mile a lot closer to that of the Ford, and slow down the average speed dramatically, assuming there were superchargers available every 80-90 miles which is probably not the case.

    • @noahvonborstel4231
      @noahvonborstel4231  Před 3 lety

      Pham Nuwen it’s not illegal to load a vehicle past it’s manufactured tow ratings from what I understand. It can cause warranty issues but I’ve never seen evidence of strict enforcement from manufacturers on this front and know a lot of people that overload by substantial margins. The expedition can travel further much faster but most of my towing is within 90 miles of my final destination and I have access to lots of friends and family with 220 plugs where the power is closer to 8-9 cents per kilowatt hour. When going on super long trips this setup isn’t ideal but for the trip I make to grass valley it saves substantial amounts of money especially when I charge my car before departure from my 18.6kW solar system like I did on the day before and the morning of this trip. Also, I prefer towing this setup with my Model Y over my Expedition that we still own. The Model Y has way more power, makes the trip easily, and is more comfortable and enjoyable to drive.

    • @phamnuwen9442
      @phamnuwen9442 Před 3 lety

      @@noahvonborstel4231 I'm just saying that the Model Y vs an Expedition is not an apples to apples comparison.
      Yes, the Model Y can be more energy efficient towing short trips, but it's not a practical towing vehicle in general. If you some day need to go further than this trip, you're kinda screwed.
      A comparison between the model Y and a SUV or car of a similar size would make more sense in terms of energy efficiency and cost.

    • @noahvonborstel4231
      @noahvonborstel4231  Před 3 lety

      Pham Nuwen I’ve towed lots with vehicles comparably sized and rated to the model Y and they also get 9-10 mile per gallon when towing that kind of load. Namely I used a 2011 Dodge Durango with a pentastar v6 to haul the same load for about a year on that same trip. The numbers won’t change much if you make the tow vehicle a Toyota Highlander, Ford Edge, or anything else comparably sized that can tow that load.
