      We all know Penix is not gonna be starting for 3-4 years because they just paid Kirk cousins 180 mil (130 guaranteed). Even if its insurance they could've gotten someone like Rattler, Pratt, or Travis as a back up in a later round. If they wanted a bridge QB why get Cousins when other more cheaper QBs were available. There's just no way Blank didn't know the plan going in and give his thumbs up, and i think it's likely Blank said 'Fix the QB position for the long haul.' He wrote the blank check for the 36 year old Cousins, I believe he wanted a QB in this draft as well.

      That's a bad comparison. Rodgers was the man in GB and there was never going to be QB controversy, plus Love was 21 not 24 and the pick was 24 or whatever and not 8. If they had used the 8th pick on Love it would have been a sh*tshow in GB. And I love how people act like that was some genius move, if they had hit on a wr there's a chance they could have had another SB. The reality is there's no defending this pick. If they wanted Penix they should have gotten a cheap bridge QB and spent the Cousins money to help build the squad.

    Here's what the falcons were thinking.. I'm a falcons fan.
    They wanted an experience quarterback to lead them so they had to overpay cousins to get him from the Vikings. The no trade clause was included to sweeten the deal honestly in a few years nobody's going to give up anything for Kirk anyways he will just have to be cut. The falcons also know that they have a great teacher with Kirk. This will help Penix when he finally takes the field.
    2 very good points were made in this video when he said the Packers picked in the '20s for each of their franchise quarterbacks so that eviscerates the falcons idea that there won't be any quarterbacks available. The 2nd point i liked was that arthur blank is 80 plus years old. You did you're own owner dirty. He's gotta wait 2 years to see his 8th pick hot the field. Could have had Latu to bolster the leagues worst pass rush. I think the falcons were banking on trading back in the first round and getting Latu as well. They thought they really could get Latu as well as Pennix. And that didn't happen so now they look stupid. If it did happen however they would look good
    This is a very perplexing move by the falcons I just don't think Terry Fontenot or Rahim Morris are that good. Terry has missed on a bunch of draft picks so far in his four years. I understand every GM misses but I just don't have a good feeling with this guy ever since his first draft where he drafted Richie Grant in the second round in the kid couldn't even learn the playbook. Not only that but he wasn't even the highest rated safety on anyone's board and he made him the first safety picked.

  • @SMW34

    Question: Were the Chiefs selfish when they traded up to draft Patrick Mahomes when they had Alex Smith who just lead them to the playoffs?? And to assume Cousins can't be traded with a no-trade clause reeks in shortsighted analysis. Guys get traded with no-trade clauses all the time - they just get to decide which teams they'd be interested in playing for. Ross usually provides good insight but this one - notsomuch

    • @mcelroynat
      @mcelroynat Před 18 dny +1

      The Chiefs had Smith on an expiring contract. The time was running out. The difference is the Falcons went out of their way to sign Cousins to a huge FA contract. Now they are locked into Cousins for at least 3 out of the 4 year contract. Proceeded to draft Penix who is already an older prospect. Penix will be 27 before he sees the field if Cousins stays healthy and productive. Are you a Falcons fan trying to cope with a questionable decision?

    • @SMW34
      @SMW34 Před 18 dny +2

      @@mcelroynat I know quite a few Falcons fans who actually love getting Penix. And they are only locked into 2 years of that 4 year contract as all of the guaranteed money is in the first two years. Cousins is 36, coming off an achilles injury and while a statistical wonder in the regular season, isn't exactly a long term answer at this juncture. Additionally, when the Chiefs drafted Mahomes, Smith had 2 years left on his deal at the time. He was set to become an UFA in 2019.

      @@mcelroynat All good brother. I just wish people wouldn't have such a reactive response to things like this. Sometimes, it's important to try to see it from both sides. Have to think the Falcons, after such a long run with Matt Ryan, understand the value of long term stability at the position. If Kirk were 10 years younger and not coming off an serious injury, I could understand the critiques. Also, it seems that teams are more willing now than ever to take a huge cap hit to move off a certain contract if they deem it fiscally or football necessary.

Do you get paid more for being the #1 overall rather than #8 overall? I grew up in Wisconsin and was a PACK fan my whole life.. When was the last SuperBowl for the PACK and why? Now I am in Denver and I think it was 2015 when they won the SuperBowl.. So 2014 they lost the SuperBowl.. Back to back appearances isn't bad.. Yeah they got Payton Manning but he had to change the way he played.. Look at all the talent around him during that time.. Was he the most $$$ QB at that time? I think Matt Ryan was.. My guess is that you need talent around the QB on both sides of the ball.. You can't have that talent if you spend all your $$$ on one player.. KC seams to be the standard these days.. Yes their offense has Mahommes and Kelce but we were talking about their defense more than their offense last year.. Jordan Love took the PACK to the playoffs last year and how much is Green Bay paying him? When Rodgers won the last two MVPs he had Davante Adams..

All the medical questions and age on Kirk and still think it was a mistake how did Minnesota played without Kirk last year oh wait they had to trade for a below average QB that beat them I might add after a few days with the team so if you’re not a true Falcons fan and follow this team closely don’t speak on needs and this sacks situation it was 10 to 11 teams with less sacks than the Falcons and we lost to 8 of those teams poor coaching and poor QB play two main problems last season

    DUMBEST TAKE on this situation that Ive heard.
    Listen up, OLD GUYS, it is the NEW NFL. Its 17 game season complete with international travel.
    You have a 36 year old one legged QB.
    In the new NFL, there is no such thing as "backups". Everyone will be seeing the field.
    There is no such thing as "bellcow" RB or backup QB.
    If you dont have 2 legitimate QBs then you have nothing.
    This pick is a real solid savy pick.
    The OLD heads simply do not understand how this current sport works

    This is a compound error move… they past on Fields as their QB and got a TE with 8th pick (which has never happened in history, take a TE in top 10) and now they are overcompensating since the fan base went nuts! Fields was a local hero and now this is a guilt pick overreach. Falcons need leadership that doesn’t outthink the room. Needed a 3 technique or edge rusher and squandered another years top pick.

    Smart thinking Falcons. Draft a QB when you don't need one.

    • @jayaugust5889
      @jayaugust5889 Před 18 dny +1

      It was selfish. Aaron Rogers had back to back MVP seasons after drafting Love. Patrick Queen, Tee Higgins, Michael Pittman, Deondra' Swift all came off the board right after the love pick. Anyone NOT sitting on the bench gave them a better chance to win it all. Atlanta doesn't care about winning a title. Drafting Penix is just masturbation.

    • @rocketanalyst
      @rocketanalyst Před 18 dny +3

      He already explained why the Jordan Love pick was way different, 1) He was drafted 26th not 8th, 2) He was 21 years old not 24, 3) He was picked after the Packers had some doubts about Rodgers longevity and/or retirement, this comes after Cousins just SIGNED, 4) It comes after a contract to the starting QB Cousins

  • @johnlicciardello2389
    @johnlicciardello2389 Před 19 dny

    It is a great strategy if you want to have a mediocre team for the next 6 years. Better to go all in on Cousins, and if he gets old and falls apart, you have a terrible season and get a top 5 pick.

    Falcons are a joke of a franchise and anyone defending this move has a sub 80 iq. It's simple, if you like Penix you don't sign Cousins, if you like Cousins you don't draft Penix. Comparing it to GB is a joke as Tucker points out.
