I only add old rusty nails to a specific outdoor plant: hydrangeas! Makes them pink rather than blue because the iron leaches out of the nails and affects the PH levels. Cheaper than 'pinking agents' bought in nurseries. 👍
I use filtered water to water my plants; the same water that I drink. 😁

@@SheffieldMadePlantsare they old pennies (or nails)? Newer pennies, nails, screws don't rust per se. They have to be ones made of old-school iron, not copper or stainless steel etc.
Good to know! I gave up on hydrangeas many years ago but I still have fantasies about growing them. 😂
I think there is one advantage to using ice cubes, if they are uniform size. When you are away from home, and want a non-plant parent to water your plants, they can use 2 or 3 ice cubes which should be enough to keep them alive, but not soggy, until you return home.

Could you do a video on Pothos Vs Philodendron... as in how to tell them apart, can they be combined in a planter, care differences for each...? I'm so confused on them!
You can normally tell by their aerial roots. Pothos tend to be thick and white whereas Philo are small brown and pointy. They have similar care requirements and I think you can combine fine 👍

It’s funny to me that all the historical fussing about plants has resulted in two opposing ‘do this for great success’ tips: don’t use cold water but do use ice. 🤷♀️ especially see the ice suggestion for orchids, but that’s like an orchid is all happy in its tropical home and then it snows… I’ve even seen orchids sold with tags suggesting the ice, and then poor orchids get this stigma that they’re super fussy and hard to care for.
They say it’s meant to trick them into blooming but I’m not sure about that 🤷🏻♂️
After finding 2 monstras in the trash i isolated and treated them in my basement for a month, very little light and they were fine i was very impressed 🙌

Would you do another question and answer session video? Here's my question: when you top water for your videos, is it just for the videos and you mostly/always water bottom? Or do you have your plants on a top watering schedule, perhaps to clear out the salts from fertilizer? Or none of the above 😂?

I have one plant I water with ice, and it is a hanging plant that also grows from the bottom hole of the pot. Normal water will flow right trough and drip on my floor, while ice will slowly release, allowing the soil to absorb it. I cannot put the pot in my sink ether because of the growth from the bottom

I use distilled water on most of my many plants, especially on my calatheas and marantas but I always add a cap full or two of Marphyl soil enhancer to a 4-liter bottle. I also purchase the larger jugs of distilled water and adjust the amount of Marphyl soil enhancer accordingly. I'm in Canada 🇨🇦 and live outside of a major city. The water from our taps is considered "hard" water and wreaks havoc on our pipes and appliances.
My fear when leaving my plants for a week or two isn't the light, but the water. I have some thirsty buggers, and they usually get watered once or twice a week. And in the summer I have my bonsai to worry about too. They get water every day almost.
What’s annoying for me is that my bedroom is a south west facing window which means that if I use a light meter, I would have to recheck it every few hours because it’s a very light shifty window.

Any tips on the bat-wing plant? It's killing me! Using non-chlorinated water, keeping moist but not wet, plant still droopy & not thriving. Also gave up on calathea - too much work! All my plants get watered from the outdoor water butts year round. Sometimes ill even have to break ice to get a can full in winter. No issues!

If anyone is interested look up cation exchange capacity, it will explain how a plant exchanges water for nutrients.
Regarding fizzy waters and sodas, I wouldn't use them. My daughter did a science experiment for school using one of her baby teeth and Seven-Up. Within two weeks the tooth had completely dissolved. If fizzy waters and sodas eat up calcium, then think about what is can do to you plants roots over-time. I agree with you, tap water with liquid fertilizer works just fine.

The reusing of soil when repotting for me usually comes down to how much is left! and yes I probably should re pot more often... the last repot I did came with a free root trim as it was a bit root-bound, so the used compost was at least 40% roots once I was done. Didn't think that would be the best option for the plant so it got chucked out into one of my garden beds (so not quite in the bin) and the plant got some fresh mix.

I have a question: I often water my plants with water that I soaked lentils or beans in. The idea is to reuse the water and to give plant some nutrients from the legumes.
But recently I realized that we soak legumes in order to take out the phytic acid, an acid that prevents the absorption of phosphorus, zinc, and other nutrients. Have I been blocking my plants from nutrients, or does it not work that way?

Re: freezing soil to kill bugs... Would freezing a fresh bag of soil, in it's original bag, work at killing any pets in it? I've got a fresh bag of Miracle Grow that I'd love to kill any fungus gnats that might be in there before I use any of it.

It’s been nearly 3 months since I stopped giving my plants tap water. Instead I give them the water from my Dehumidifier I even bought a 5L water bottle from Tesco’s. & I top it up with any excess water from my Dehumidifier. Apparently you can store water for 6 months. My Fungus Gnats issue I think is solved I managed to get what Peat I still had in the bag into the freezer and I left in there for 48 hours to finally kill them 🤞

The only time I think using ice makes sense is if you're taking care of a Darlingtonia Californica. Those carnivorous plants apparently need their roots to be cool.

The reason for letting your water sit before watering, isn't for the temperature, it's to let the chlorine in the tap water dissipate.
Unless your water company is using chloramine which doesn’t dissipate
If you don't wanna wait for the water to get to room temperature, you can also just add a little bit of warm water into the cold water from the tap. A tiny bit makes the water pretty room temperate. Cool eh? :D

The only plant I found that likes ice cubes is cyclamen, at least here in the hot climate of Israel
Sadly the ice watering orchid thing is some weird myth/sales tactic to advertise orchids to average people who think they're difficult. Apparently orchids need a steady trickle of water and it being ice cold isn't a problem for a tropical plant. It was literally based on a experiment that lasted for a few months to see if watering with ice cubes affects flowering display life. Note: it was only testing if the flowers drop off faster while being displayed and not the long term effects as those plants go on for years. Ice cubes can't wet all the roots in pot leading to underwatering. People need to be informed that the ice cubes are useless "simple" way to water and just water like any other plant or even soak in for a bit in fertilised water like I do so all the roots are watered with no possible cold damage.

What about watering with water that was miro waved? I know somebody that did that and it seemed to not benefit the plant that much

So the whole "plant air quality" thing seems to actually be pretty freakin accurate at least in my house or maybe BC I have over 100 plants in about 500 square feet. I have allergies so I got an air purifier that tells me the air quality and will auto adjust etc to deal with poor quality. I'm in Canada so I'm sure you know we had a lot of smoke this year since our forests essentially were smelled globally 😬 on the days where there were air quality warnings for outside where I needed inhalers etc, my bedroom and livingroom (where I've got my plants and the purifier) only ever got up to like a 12 and it was like in the 60s or higher for the ppm outside! It would spike up to about 12 and then drop down when a door was opened type thing. My house is MESSY with dust, birds, a dog, a cat and so on and most of the time my readings 1-5, even on air quality warning days... It's levoit which I have only had good experiences with so I've been impressed. I genuinely believe the plants are helping pull the yuck out of the air a lot since my air purifier should be in a full on "clean your house" rage mode IMO. Obviously when I vacuum it spikes ever so slightly but I really don't have the dust motes and stuff that I used to. That said, it could be two things, one the plants breathing and two the surface space to collect dust and such and keep it from being airborne, but however they do it I'll take it BC being tired from allergy medication all the time SUCKS!

But Mr. Sheffield….I believe current science shows the optimal water ph for plants to be 6.0. This allows for the most efficient nutrient uptake.
Now, while I feel using Perrier would be the ultimate over the top plant flex, I do advocate slightly acidic>neutral for watering.
The debunking of the NASA study still makes me sad.

Is the house plant focus only available in the UK? Should I fertilize my plants in the winter? My plants are in miracle grow soil, would that be too much fertilizer for them? Help 😮
My perspective on this topic is if the soil is new and you just repotted it recently I would wait till spring. If it's old soil and the plant is actively growing I may add a teensy bit to the water when watering.
Not sure if it’s available outside UK. And not sure what’s in Miracle gro soil. I fertilise the plants that are growing in got winter. Ficus plants tend to stop so I don’t bother with them

logic behind watering with ice: certain plants such as cacti and orchids require lower temperatures in order to flower in the summer, so watering with ice cubes is supposed to give them the required low temp
No actually true but there are some Pitcher Plants from Oregon and Northern CA that live near the ocean. Their roots are waters by run off that bubbles up out of the ground as it runs to the sea. Cactus and orchid respond to air temp, roots would be damaged.
You reach those temps by placing your plants in a cool window sill, not by placing frozen cubes on their roots and causing cold damage. Talk to any experienced growers, they will tell you that using ice cubes is wrong. Why on earth would you place ice on tropical and desert plants? They don't have exposure to ice in their native growing regions. It's a game of risk that will eventually lead to damage and exposure to fungal and bacterial infections.
I would be worried about scorching the stems as well, seeing as that the phloem and xylem are on the exterior area of stems and these carry the water and nutrients through the plant.
I wonder who comes up with these ideas? Banana water, and ice cubes etc for TROPICAL plants... yeah, seems like a smart thing to do. 'Cause they all love cold, I hear. And it totally rains banana water over there in the jungles. Oh wait...
