Here's a hack, use vinegar to cut rust from garden tools. I haven't tried it, but heard it on another video here.
I feel like IKEA should sponsor you at this point
You got a contact?
@@SheffieldMadePlants😂👍
@@SheffieldMadePlants No I wish , maybe someone reads this that works there !
4:13 With reusing water (grey water) don't forget using the water from when you are trying to heat up your water. Our water tank isn't ideally placed so we have to run our water for a bit before washing dishes or taking a shower to get it hot, that water hasn't been touched and is perfect for all kinds of things.
That's a really good one!
Very good 👍
and the opposite, during summer it takes 3 liters until we get a cold glass of water out the tap, keep a jug on the bench.
ASK PERMISSION!! Absolutely the best answer to this unwarranted debate over the stealing of plant cuttings. 👍
Absolutely!!
I have a Notion spreadsheet for my plants. I record the scientific name, the known-as name, the month I got it, a link to a care article as well as the level of water, light and humidity it needs. I also attach a picture. I am very organised though!
I like the coathanger hack but I only have velvet or padded hangars in my house dahling! I like the little trellis hack someone mentioned below though.
I've seen loads of CZcams plant channels say they've given up on Leca lately because of the hassle. I prefer soil or water. I also use a kitchen ladle to repot my plants.
So even though I won't be doing any of these hacks please keep them coming!
Very good! Like the organisation
I totally made a heart shaped trellis for my Hoya from a coat hanger ❤. Cute and free. 😊 🌱
Great stuff 👍
I did it with a Jade plant. It’s funky😂
About the tags: you don’t need to make your own. As long as it’s made from plastic, you can stick the tag between the pot and the soil with just the top visible, just like those yoghurt container labels.
True 😁
The wire coat hanger trellis is a excellent diy hack... I never thought of it 👍🏻
Cheers pal
Excellent tips as always 😊I try to use WD40 on my pruners, after washing them under water and cleaning them with alcohol. It really keeps them rust-free and also well-oiled.
Like it!
Instead of a big plastic prop box, I use large, attractive glass containers with lids for propagations and display them terrarium-style.
Very good 👍
You could take a snapshot of the plant tags, I have a little notebook I keep my tags in along with when I purchased the plant and any additional care it needs especially when to prune or cut back for my outside plants. Blessings 💜
Me,too! 💚💚

I have a hack! Use a dollar store clear shower curtain as a liner for baskets! I mean or anything you want to use as a cache pot!
The coat hanger for a trellis is such a WONDERFUL idea! They all are good but right now, for me, it is a great answer to the delimma for my pothos "arms" 😃👍. BTW, I love your channel
Thanks!
It's astonishing how little people over here (in Germany) know about Perlite.. None of the local stores have it and if you ask what those white grains are, they have in most of their (imported) plant soil, most common answer is fertilizer, flint/small pebbles or even styrofoam 🤣 rooting cuttings works just amazingly in perlite as they still get air while keeping it moist ❤ most my FungusGnats problem got solved by adding Sarracenias and Pinguiculas to my collection, and there's nothing more satisfying then to watch those little buggers land on my plants, not knowing it's their final descent 🤣 thanks for your video, as always super informative and great presentation :D 👍
I need to get some of those for sure!
@@SheffieldMadePlants also try to get some Sundews Drosera Adelae and D.Capensis they are really super effective against the little flies👍 look for local species, maybe D.Anglica :D they're super fun and beautiful!
Carnivorous plants are fantastic and have become my new obsession. Pinguiculas and drosera are my favourite
Love and Peace.
Just the solution for my soon to be ruined windowsills ... I paused you video right after the fist hack, ran upstairs to get the felt pads and immediately applied to the bottom of all my ceramic pots. Even cut them in half for smaller pots. Thank you very much !!!
Great stuff 👍
Love your videos as always! So soothing to watch and love all the tips! I look forward to getting alerts from you my plant friend! Hope you are having a wonderful weekend! 🪴
Love it! Happy weekend!
Awesome hacks, thank you! Eco friendly AND budget friendly. Win win!!
Yes! Thank you!
The lemon juice and salt hack is also great for cleaning and deodorizing that cutting board.
Going to try some of these. I love your channel.
Thanks!
Suggestion: When cleaning your cutter blades with lemon/salt, instead of making a puddle somewhere by pouring it on the blades, just stick the blades into the bowl or a smaller/taller jar or container to soak, whatever you need to use to make the liquid level high enough to cover the blades. Less messy and you might be able to stick the scissors or other tools in there too!
Never thought of cutting up food containers to labels! Great hack idea! I make plant labels out of old and broken vinyl blind slats. I usually find them really cheap at garage/yard sales. I cut them into usable sizes and give them a pointed end. They work really well! Great video as usual!😊
Great idea!
🇦🇺 🙋🏼♀️ hi Mr Sheffield nice bunch of handy hacks. If you're using lemon/vinegar, it's s good idea to rinse in bi-carb water to ensure all the acid is gone, rinse in clean water and really important to oil it afterwards to prevent the piece rusting all over.
I've made scoops from round soft drink bottles too, you can squeeze the opening to get into narrow spaces when potting.
You don't need to upgrade your pots when you're starting out with leca/pumice. Just use ordinary nursery pots and a cache pot. Some people use a soldering iron to add extra holes for extra air flow. If you haven't heard of her, the leca queen's CZcams channel is very helpful.
Oh, and fungus gnats love moss too 😡 annoying little 💩
Love the Picasso style trellis! ❤️❤️
Have a great week🙋🏼♀️
Thanks for the tip. Yes her channel is great
One time local plant store gave me whole Kalanchoe because it stopped flowering. Now I can propagate and make whole family feel the power of gifting. :)
Nice 👌
Many years ago, I lived in California during a major drought. Watering outdoors was generally forbidden, so I carried gray water from the bathtub down the stairs to water the potted plants on my large front porch. Thst year I had so many beautiful flowers, which I made detailed botanical drawings of. I still have the drawings, done almost 50 years ago.
Thanks for sharing!
Great advice and hacks there, i love the wire hanger idea!
For those who have freshwater fish tanks, never forget to reuse the water from your maintenance waterchanges to give your plants a drink! It's packed with good nutrients! ;)
To add an idea to the "labeling of plants hack" I have been considering myself...
For context, I have commented on an earlier video that I have all plant names in an Excel sheet. They have now been divided up with color labels to the different 'zones'/spots in my room. So all plants on my desk have the same colour for example. All plants in the excel sheet are in alphabetical order, so while watering I can spot plants more quickly in my list by colour. Usually I go about watering spot for spot, not constantly back and forth through the room. That is how I like to have a good overview.
Having said that, if you have all your plant names on a list, you could then easily give all plants on the list a number (in order of buying them or whatever you want) and just write or print that number on the label. I have 2 small Gymnocalysium Mihanovichii Variegata for example, having that written out on a label would take up quite some space🤣. If you don't want to see labels, hiding one with just a number is much easier 😃
You are on a whole other level and I love it!
Love the organisation!
Bit of autism has it advantages 😆
I didn't know plants would grow in perlite just as good as in dirt. Sounds like an idea I need to try. Have a blessed day.
You need to provide a complete liquid fertiliser in the right dosage to have longevity with this technique.
@@RookAdmirer thank you
Mr. Sheffield, Thank-you so much for all the info you provide for all of us :) Was wondering about your thoughts on "plants love music and when you breath on them"
I need to test that. Doubt there’s much in it though. What’s your thoughts?
@@SheffieldMadePlants Well my mom says that plants like Carbon Dioxide so breath on them and they grow better? and I guess they get grow better with music playing, don't know really she has always told me these things so I sing/breath on my plants in the morning, thu im not a green thumb so i don't see a difference but im a new plant mommy lol
Also, with vines that have dropped leaves(phil, pothos, monstera, even ficus), you can take keiki paste made for orchids and dab a tiny bit on the dormant nodes and they'll grow new shoots! I've had a 6 foot section on my favorite pothos that I recently did this to and almost every bud grew new leaves🥹 I've also done this to my fiddle leave buds that haven't produced new leaves in a while and they also IMMEDIATELY pushed out new growth! You only need the tiniest bit of paste and it's magical. A great hack for the plant parents that like the overgrown jungle aesthetic or want to shape their plants in a more specific way 😊
I’m trying that at the moment actually
@@SheffieldMadePlants Always experimenting! I look forward to watching your video on it!!
One more for you. The glass containers make perfect propagating water containers. Pickle, marinara, capers…. Perfect sized jars for all the different size plants
Nice 👌
I use my glass jars to grow orchids in water culture! They are very happy and I like being able to see their roots so I know when to water. 🌺
I think I will give it a try with easy going plants to get them out of the soil and see how it goes. Nice hacks and btw you are so funny!!
Great stuff 👍
Look at all the subs you're getting!!!🎉
😁
so glad I found your channel... I am going to binge watch everything
Welcome aboard!
I take out the plant tags, but i store them all in a little makeup bag with my other plant supplies so i can always just find it if i forget the name. I guess this wouldn’t work if you collect one type of plant and would have trouble remembering which variety is which, but i don’t, so it works for me. One bag for houseplants and one for outside plants!
Sounds good
7:19 good idea now when I go buy a plant next time I’m gonna check for any propagations and ask !
Great stuff 👍
Hi man, I enjoy your videos. Greetings from Washington D.C. I am actually from Nepal but I live in this climate. Just like my house plants that are not from here but live in the same house as I. We both enjoy some nice soup. Cheers.
Sounds great! 😁
Try following the Leca Queen...she is all leca...her channel won't steer you wrong...all of her gorgeous plant babies are living in leca and are beautiful and growing like wild fire...check her out
For sure
I solved my fungus gnat problem by putting aspen wood chips on the surface of the soil, it doesn’t stink when damp and it keeps the gnats away from the soil where they breed.
You can find the wood chips in the pet section of your store, it’s used for pet bedding.
Thanks for the tip 👍
@@SheffieldMadePlants No problem, i forgot to mention that i only use it on the self watering plants and you can’t top water using it because it will float up.
leca is just love, i m telling you. a little over 2 months ago i converted every single plant i own to leca, all of them made it without much trouble, besides some epipremnum, those are such a diva when it comes to transfering to anything really. yes they root like crazy and wont die at all for the most part but dare you if you put an epipremnum that allready has roots to a different medium, they rot away like crazy so its best to cut ALL of its roots and start a brand new plant with new fresh rooted cuttings.
but besides that, i m so in love. i feel like im ''finally there'' semi hydro way of keeping plants is so fun to me aswell because you can do really creative things. and my plants go complete bonkers on leca. im not even kidding, in between end of october until now, they put out more growth and increased in height than they did the entire rest of the year combined. some of them almost grow TOO fast because i cant even keep up with them, i allready would need to repot plants to give them larger pots that i only live in that pot for less than a month, its beyond crazy how fast they go.
Thanks I’m experimenting too. So far so good
For a small soil scoop, I've cut the top off a vitamin bottle. I put a rubber band around it to map out where I wanted the angled cut, then drew a line with a marker, and cut away. It's quick, easy, and just the right size.
Very good 👍
Very informative, me and my wife just love your videos
Very entertaining. Keep em coming 👍👍
Thank you! Will do!
You can also buy 1/4 yard of felt at the craft store and hot glue it to your pot saucers to prevent damage to your surfaces ,it’s cheaper. I keep felt scraps around for just that.
Nice one!
Like the hanger hack and plastic labels 👍
Unsubscribe to the channel? For the first time in my whole life I hear this 🤣
I collect rainwater for my plants. I use about 2 gals a week. I also use it to make distilled water for my humidifier.
Perfect!
There’s a local company that uses glass bottles for their spices . I keep those for newly purchased spices in plastic containers AND I use extra ones for cuttings . I also use other tube shaped glass jars for cuttings. I like them because they can be sterilized easily and reused.

9:02 what! Soilless !
My aunty always saved her gray water, including her bath water for her house plants and outdoor trees.
The best tip I can give in using leca is to clean the roots of potting mix as best as you can. It will make a world of difference for the plant. ❤. Great hacks, too.
Thanks for sharing
Thank you for sharing is rain water safe for indoor plants 😊
Yep, screen the bits and bobs out and it's good
Great tips as always. thank you very much 👍🏻
As for removing rust, a 70/30 solution of vinegar and water works really well as an alternative
Not plant related at all, but I used this to remove almost all the rust from a Danish 1858-style officers sabre, that I inherited from my father
I was very worried about damaging an old authentic sword/sabre and the diluted vinegar solution was the solution I got from several medieval oriented channels
Very good!
Very good!
The biggest problem with trying out leca is that you’ll want to transfer everything to leca after you see the results. Double the growth of soil. Difficult plants become easy. Buying all new pots or modifying current ones is the biggest annoyance.

I so enjoy your videos that I don't watch anyone elses!
Thank you 😊
For my Dioscorea Elephantipes, I made a small trellis with some binding wire (very thin metal with green plastic around it, easy to bend). Most big plant stores have it on a roll (couple of meters) for a few bucks. That is a good alternative for small plants like mine still is. If they get bigger and heavier, the coat hanger would be a great step up :)
Sounds great!
prop lifting. classic!
6:52 never thought of prop lifting !
But never gonna do it
Very wise
It is stealing if you don’t ask the shop.
Great advice thank you
You bet!
Great video again, thank you! Never thought of using the pads for some reason. If you don't have any lemon to hand, toothpaste can also help with rust!
Ooo didn't know that
@@SheffieldMadePlants I use it on my sink which is a million years old, I also use it on toys and even fabric with rust stains. Worth giving it a go.
I use LECA (sometimes mixed with PON) with all my Alocasia, anything in the Marantaceae family, and most Hoya. If I were to suggest one to start with, I'd say a small specimen of Hoya carnosa, any variety of it. I have Tricolor (Krimson Queen), Rubra (Krimson Princess) and Compacta (Hindu Rope) in a mix of PON and LECA, and they experienced zero set backs with the transition from soil. I just washed the soil out, and nestled the roots in the rocky substrate. Watered from the top the first month (no reservoir) then gave them a shallow reservoir with nutrient water (Growth Technology Foliage Pro or Dyna-Grow Foliage Focus).
Cool thanks for the tips
Yaaaaay. Semi-Hydroculture is comming :D
Great video by the way, I'll be using the wire hanger trellis
Cheers!
Lecavalier queen has lots of tips
5:41 I never throw my tags 🏷️ in the bin just in case I need it
I've used neem powder in my water and the gnats went away. It took a few months but it worked.
Thanks for the tip
I will go one step further with the cut hanger. Use an aquarium air tubing and insert the wire in the tubing. Cut the tubing at least one inch above the end of the wire, then made into the shape you like. You will have a neater look to the trellis.
Cool thanks for the tip
5:20 are you serious 😂
I hope the bin gets paid for their many cameos.
He gets breakfast lunch and dinner as pay 😁
I tried using broccoli water on my bedrokm plants and my room stank like farts for about two weeks. Not recommended.
😂 you just made my day, needed that laugh 🤣
Hello❤❤❤
I had some plants rooted in Lecca but after some time , I noticed moss on the Lecca and the vase itself .. 😢😢😢😢
I think you’re noticing algae. It won’t hurt anything.
2:48 since the 90s 😂😂
4:35. I think that really depends on the plant.
I save the water from the fish tanks in a huge bucket by the back door for my plants fish and snail poop is excellent fertiliser
If only I had a neighbour like you...
Perfect!
Can I use water from my back yard fish pond?@@SheffieldMadePlants
Soaking rusted tools in straight vinegar also works for removing rust
Good shout 👍
Like the hacks, but don't know many ppl still using wire hangers. Also would not recommend starting leca; aroids like it, but the upkeep sucks with the flushing and nutrient adding.
😬
1:52 that’s funny 😂
Hi mr Sheffield one question
What was the name of the thing that you use you used it in one of your videos.
It’s the thing that sucks the water from the saucer when there is to much water what’s it called please
Turkey baster
Thank you so much !
Use a pencil for your plant labels on plastic. Sharpie ink, sadly fades over time and you will still be left scratching your head. Pencil does not fade or rinse off. If you want to reuse your label, you can erase it easily…
👍👍👍
2:33 wow that’s a nice aloe Vera I’ve also got one !
How long did it take to grow ?
I've had it about a year. Not changed much
hmm wondering, if i need salt and lemons to clean my pruners, and you use alcohol to sterilize it too... i could just have some tequile while i m on it xD

What's quicker for propagation? Perlite or succulent soil?
I think perlite
Definitely perlite
We want a video about leca
Working on something but it’s long term
I tried a little perlite box last week. Wetted the stuff, and poked in cuttings from my Scindapsus Pictus. They rotted in a few days. What did I do wrong? The others that I'm rooting in water seem find still, and the ones in LECA have roots showing. Why would all the ones in perlite turn black and mushy?
Hmm very odd. Was water pooling at the bottom?
@@SheffieldMadePlants yes, some water was pooled at the bottom, but not nearly as much as the cuttings in LECA or in the jar of water, as both of those were filled near the top.
@@Enn- might just be bad luck with a dodgy cutting
8:21 but a lot of time the takeaway boxes are oily 🥴

Is it trellis trellis

You don't need to label your plants.
Google Assistant can already identify any plant if you point your phone camera towards it.
I laughed too hard at tge 2 minute mark.. looks like someone got friendly with those clippers
😁
I completely moved away from clay pots to plastic. Imo, plastic is overall the best choice for so many reasons. Clay pots being prone to leaching is very annoying.
Terracotta for succulents only.
Yeah i've got tired of that
By the way this is your 299th video !
