Alienware AW2725DF - Amazing, but there’s a catch

- The specs of the Alienware AW2725DF are insane. It's a 360 Hz QD-OLED monitor with a glossy, flat 1440p panel. But it does some weird stuff you should know about.

I did some additional tests: All preset modes are affected by the dimming except for the Creator preset (sRGB and DCI-P3 mode). The same dimming behavior also happens below 100% brightness, but the jump in nits is not as steep as at max brightness. For example: At 50% brightness it's a jump from about 117 nits to 99 nits.
Oleds are actually best at lower brightness, even LCD panels have problems when increasing the brightness of the backlight for SDR.. A drop in image quality effects LCD panels at higher brightness levels.. sadly :(
Just to confirm, while gaming using the Creator-sRGB preset you can hit up to 245 nits of brightness?
@@andrewmorris3479 Yes!
@@techlessYT Sweet, thanks!
Im considering buying this monitor for gaming but don't want one that has some sort of weird dimming issue. Is the creator preset good for gaming or should I buy something else?
When you referenced issues with colour accuracy, keep in mind that DCI-P3 is a cinema standard, it is meant to have a green tint due to the format of cinema projectors. White point should be X 0.3140, Y 0.3510 which is closer to 6300K.
Yeah. I think he means D65-P3 where it's meant for hdr and colorful movies and videos on normal screens.
Good point! I'm referencing Display P3 with a D65 white point here. The measured white point is xy 0.3155 0.3549, so it's still a bit off from the DCI Theater white point.
Nah it isn’t green for their other oled monitor
@@shiion6711DCI-P3 has a green tint on any monitor. If their other monitor doesn't have a green tint it's because it's set to use another color space. Probably sRGB.
Thanks for the thorough review and digging in to the SDR brightness issues. It looks incredibly dodgy. Dell have some explaining to do 😒
@techlessYT I was very surprised to see that you have kept the Philips Evnia 8600. I use this monitor, too and like it very much, save for the sometimes noticeable fan.
I have two questions hoping you can help me out:
Do you, by any chance, know whether the sRGB mode active in SDR mode influences the HDR mode, or not? I've heard there are some monitors that do that, it is usually recommended to always disable sRGB in SDR mode before turning on HDR which would be a bit annoying.
And lastly...do you have calibration data for the Philips? I know these are not universally transmissible for all units of the same model, but I guess trying yours over not having a calibration at all could stil, be benefitial. ^^
Thanks in advance.
How stable is the brightness if most of the monitor is black? If you had the white box panning up and looping would the monitor lower the brightness?
Thanks for the review
nice review as always.. are u reviewing the new AOC 24G4 anytime soon?
hi, i realized that both PG32UCDM and AW3225QF are listed as nvidia g-sync compatible and have the corresponding stickers out of the box. does that mean the oled adaptive sync flickering is not present on those monitors?
Very interesting observations - great work! I found similar oddities with the brightness cause it felt oddly dim for something supposedly so Bright as my Review shows. HDR performance was much better. DCI-P3 is extremely green as I also found. Very disappointing and no way to fix it. But I see your eyes haven't been killing you - So that's a plus!
Excellent work.
a little reminder, to test real world motion performance in pursuit, you need to match the relative target speed to the relative resolution.
what matters in game is the amount of movement in degrees/time not amount of pixels shifted/time.
rotating your viewpoint 103° will make 1920 pixels shift on a FHD monitor, 2560px on a QHD one, etc.
So with increased resolutions you also need to increase the pursuit target speed.
will you also review the 32 inch alienware? awesome video as always, man sieht sich im nächsten video❤
Yes ✌️
Ty for bringing up the brightness issue with this monitor. I returned it and waiting for the new WOLEDS. My pg27aqdm is way brighter than this monitor in SDR
Hi, im in the market to buy a new monitor in the next few weeks (oled) do u recommend the pg27aqdm more then the aw2725df? And how “matte” is the panel of the asus? I like the glossyness of this aw panel. But it has some serious downsides which idk i can live with
Wirst du auch ein Test für den neuen LG 27GS95QE machen?
I'm crazy about buying it, but when you talked about the flickering it reminded me that OLED panels aren't for me yet. I played on my LG C3 and even had headaches, I believe I will have with this monitor. Problem is that once on the OLED it looks like the other panels are ugly. Excellent video and thank you very much for the information.
I bought it on the dell online shop like 2,5 weeks ago. I loved it the first day. On the second day all of a sudden it made a little sound and the monitor was black. I checked it and it still was detectable for my pc as a second monitor but it did not show anything. Not even the menu saying "no signal" or sth like that. I returned it to dell. UPS tracking makes it possible to see that Dell got it back 7 days ago. But the support is the worst nightmare i have ever seen: No updates, no communication after the returning.. it is terrible. I checked the amazon website in germany. You cannot buy this product at the moment. On May 5th a customer comments that his one was broken too. I feel like there might be some bigger issues with some produced alienwares 2725df.... I am so upset and cannot recommend it because of that. I should have gone for msi instead.
Is there any seamless bezelless monitor at least on the left right side....to make gaming setup with 3 monitors
This is the most thorough review of this monitor from any content creator. Thank you for the important details.
Hey i just bought this monitor and although its great i cant seem to figure out how to turn the monitor off.Could you please explain how to shut the monitor off?
I am looking for this one or neo g8 from samsung. Unfortunately alienware is not yet in stoc here. What do you think?
Hello nice video! Maybe do an update on the qd oled and woled video? The last one had caps of under 200hz both monitors.
Has there been any firmware update to fix these? or have alienware given an update regarding future fix of this? or is it going to be like this only for a 900$ panel?
what color profile did you choose in windows for the srgb preset mode?
Really interesting stuff. Keep at it, hopeful that we can see the MSI and ASUS versions in comparison and this summer the LG and ASUS displays.
Sorry I’m definitely not the brightest when it comes to Monitor specs but would you say this monitor is not recommended for low refresh rate gaming? (I play mainly ingle player games)
i got question so the iccu profile i donwload i turn it off when i have hdr on and only on when using sdr?? or should i calibrate my own hdr profile for when i use hdr
got an answer to that question yet? Got mine today and ask myself the same. When HDR is on, on the monitor, I cant really change a thing, which is probably right.
Man I really wanna buy an oled, but the text clarity problem and freesync flickering is a real deal-breaker for me
Can you tell us the powerdraw at full and half brightness?
curious to know, what's the reason of recommending the Gamer mode for any custom adjustments over the "Custom" color mode? It seems like they are identical, however Gamer modes have the Black Stabilizer setting available too (which you wouldn't use for calibration anyways). and Standard is equal to all Gamer + Custom modes when they are set to default. Is this correct or am I missing something?
Yeah it's the black stabilizer. I always recommend the mode that gives the most accurate results. And if there's more than one I recommend whichever offers the most options.
@@techlessYT I see. I had trouble using the Creator sRGB mode. When I calibrated it using Calibrite Display Pro HL it looked good at first and gave me a deltaE of 0.5 until I noticed that certain blacklevels add a weird pattern, like artifacts. it's super strange and I can't explain why this is happening. and using it without a custom ICC profile just doesn't look right to my eyes, reds look kinda orange and washed out.

@techless i wanted to buy this monitor for single player games, but the flikering scares me, i have tried the lg woled, but colors are washed out 😔
Hii what are your thoughts about the Viewsonic omni vx2438j please?
Just a suggestion, next time when you do the QD-OLED bright light shinning to make QD-OLED looks purple, can we also have a more realistic way like when the normal light is on top of the monitor like in ceiling kind of place? Thank you.
Are you going to review the MSI MPG 271QRX?

Hi Techless, great video, i have been use Asus Oled PG27aqdm and its been great. But when use gsync it raise black/gamma level which annoying when play dark games like alan wake 2 using hdr. I had to disable gsync when play alan wake 2 to black/gamma level not raise making strange crush black. Is it known issue with oled and VRR ? Or there is solution ?
Have you tried using the 'Shadow Boost' feature? This is meant to improve visibility in dark scenes by altering the gamma curvature
@@Xano-pn4sd thanks for reply, But what i mean is when gsync enable making shade grey up like increase gamma making black and gray banding when gsync enable.if use shadow boost just makinh brighter while i want darker as intended by the game. After research further this issue common cause by vrr flickering, it can raise gamma/grey shades in dark scene. Turn off gsync or limit fps when gsync on is solution or create custom refresh rate below 240 but this solution i'm not favor it.
Perhaps because DSC. With 1440p and 360 Hz you need Compression with DP 1.4a. This can cause some problems with VRR. Alienware said they will solve this problem with a firmware where you can enable/diable DSC. In this case you cant go 360 Hz.

One one hand, AW its out now and its 100€ cheaper, but i wonder if MSI can solver the brightness and green tint issues you mention.

Don't buy QD-OLED
@@ThisIsMeArnoldSo I was about to buy the AW 360 Oled. What's your pick for a high end 360hz or above monitor right now?
Yeah, I have noticed pixel shift happening quite often and it doesn't shock me to hear that it moves every 3 minutes, that's pretty aggressive. But also, one thing I don't like about this monitor is that the brightness doesn't dim during inactivity like on the LG version.
I just lower the contrast to 0 when I am away from my PC
does this monitor work just as well with an nvidia grtaphics card. i always assume you need a g-sync monitor with nvidia carrds
From what I’ve been researching, nvidia and amd products will work just as good on opposite platforms. I have this monitor and will be using a nvidia rog strix 4090 with the freesync premium pro that this monitor has.
Do you have a contact at dell who can comment on this brightness issue? Its 100% not as bright as my AW3423DWF in full screen applications.
I only have a contact at their marketing agency, but I've asked them for a statement from Dell and a potential firmware update. I hope they can clear this up soon.
@@techlessYTI sure hope we get an update that fixes SDR brightness!
I've been using adaptive sync on this monitor for a few weeks, I've never noticed any flickering. I play a variety of games at varying refresh rates, no issues.
Same, I do see some flicker especially in loading screens (very high fluctuation, I assume) but during gameplay it has been very stable.
I’m coming from a Dell S3422DWG with a VA panel, which was way worse until I capped the lower VRR bounds to ~70Hz.
I’m playing exclusively in the VESA HDR 400 True black mode with auto HDR and G-Sync.

What is your experience with low fps gaming (cyberpunk etc)? Do you choose the flickering or the tearing or do you use a different monitor for that?

Afaik VRR flickering is inherent to OLED and VA panels. I'd take some flickering over tearing any day of the week tho.

And does it have the issue with dirty gray shades? woleds have them, and I can not use such a monitor in win dark mode. But oled loosing out to a lcd in inputlag is also a no go.
Motion clarity on OLED is next level compared to LCD. Input lag is nothing vs pixel response time and this is where LCD is slow as hell.

Can I get some help from you tech geniuses. My son really wanted this monitor, so I bought it for him. However he uses it for his Xbox series X.
I know/knew there are no speakers with this monitor (I know majority of monitors don't have speakers), I assumed the monitor would have an audio out port or something, it doesn't.
I've read he would need to connect his monitor to his laptop and his speakers to his laptop for audio. However this is where I am lost, what port does he use from the monitor to connect to his laptop(display port, USB, USB-C etc), does he use the downstream or upstream monitor port?.
Also his laptop is a Mac, not windows.
Is there an easier way, for example can I just do a displayport to a soundbar without going through his laptop?
I'm not a pc gamer so I'm a bit lost. So what's the easiest options?.

the creator and custom color preset for the alienware monitor is significantly brighter than the hdr true black and hdr peak 1000 modes.
Don't know why but this has been my experience as well as others.
Dell might not be cheating but it's certainly sketchy, Almost everyone else has measured 250-275 nits not 200 in real world scenes and in gaming.

I've got the LG that is mentioned in the video. Yes you can see it very obvious if the framerate and therefore the refresh rate changes drastically. But this doesn't happen to often. I would never go back to an IPS mostly because of the motion clarity, the bright highlights and the black level.

I have 2 monitors side by side, the aw2721d (240hz ips) and aw2725df, when watching HDR content, the aw2721d has more vibrant colors, can someone explain my why?
Perceived brightness does it. Just totally black out the room you're in. You'll be able to reduce nits even more for less chance of burn in. Probably exponentially so.
Do the MSI 2715QRX please 🙏🙏 NEW monitor!!
Id say it was pretty much designed to pass LTT tests, which are they are known to say they dont have HDR test equipment yet
the biggest step forward is the stand finaly, what are they even thinking putting those huge ass stands on those monitors?
Could you evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the S27DG60、FO27Q3 and AW2725DF? It has been confirmed that the A/D boards of the S27DG60 and the AW2725DF are from different manufacturers. Although it is widely known that Samsung's warranty for burn-in issues is not very consumer-friendly, making an extended warranty meaningless to consumers, haha!
I'm also confused about the details of FO27Q3's HDMI 2.1 and DP1.4... whether it's superior to SS's 10G/4L, and whether the PS5's maximum 4K mapping can achieve 120Hz? What about VRR status? Can DSC be turned off manually? Also, what IC is used on the A/D motherboard?
Additionally, I suggest that your future LCD monitor reviews include an introduction to the A/D board for each model.
This makes me think of dieselgate, same type if shady tinkering.
I guess the reduced brightness explains why Dell are the only ones to offer a 3-year warrenty on their products.

Not at the moment. It's one of the reasons I returned mine. I tried everything from installing the latest drivers to setting different refresh rates within the nvidia control panel. Nothing worked.
