    I can’t believe this popped up on my feed. I never searched it but I planned on it. I had to just turn the knob to the left and it worked! Thanks for the help!

    The reason your service manual is junk is because half of it is missing-there were two volumes, one covered the Chassis and Body, the other volume covered electrical diagnosis. That being said, I agree with the other commenters, it looks like your door open switch is stuck. And I still occasionally reach for that switch when I need to get into the truck of my C5, old habits die hard. I loved that switch, though, it was in such a convenient place.

    Hey Chris, great content. My door switch has never worked and now that I think about it I think the interior lights don't work either. Been working on other projects so it's been a while since I've worked on the Corvette. You have done at least 50% of my diagnosis time thank you.

    For anyone still having this problem, simply check the door ajar plunger located on the door shell, lubricate with some wd40, manually push it a few times to work in the lube. This should fix the car not recognizing the door open/ajar status, this preventing the use of the hatch glass switch or other functions related to the door open/ajar status. Worked for me, hope it works for you.

    Your videos are very informative. I have a 88 Corvette with no modifications except for replacing the radio. Both the hatch switches work regardless of the position of the interior dimmer knob. Sometimes the switches stick from not using them so i just keep pushing down on the switch till it does work. The switches seem loose-not sure if they can be tightened up from inside or it's just the aging of the vinyl door panel giving way over time. I have both books from the guy I bought the car from years ago --they have been helpful at times.

    On my 90 vette it was the plunger switch on the door. If it doesn't fully extend when you open the door the lights will not work and the hatch button on the door will not work. All I did was to oil the slide with some 3 in 1 oil. Work it back and forth till operated smoothly.

    '86 Vette, convertible: storage hatch deck for rag top won't open with door switches, etc. Replaced "Hatch Release Relay" (30 AMP) in fuse box. Didn't solve the problem. My '86 Owners Manual also shows another diagram of a second "Fuse Holder - Part of I/P Harness" which illustrates another "Hatch Auto" fuse (3 AMP). Want to try replacing this fuse but can't locate where this "fuse holder" box is located! Manual says, ""located behind driver information center" huh? Any idea where this second fuse box is? Thanks.

    So... I recently bought a 93 and the hatch button on the door wasnt working. In a totally unrelated fix I replaced some vacuum lines. One of these lines ran through the fire wall and under the dash. Ever since I changed that line the hatch release has worked. Just dumb luck.

    Its the door switch to turn on your interior lights if it doesn't work your interior lights wont come on when you open your door witch then wouldn't allow the truck switch to work i only know this because i been trying to get mine to work all day i pulled off door panels and everything checking connections it turned out i had a door switch missing on the driver door but when i open the passenger door the lights come on with the door switch and it works then i thought why not hold the door switch then try it it doesn't work so that tells me its the missing door switch on the driver side not reading the door being opened and closed also thanks for the video it inspired me to look at mine and fix them

  • @robertboltz7368
    @robertboltz7368 Před 3 lety +1

    Chris your problem is the switch that is supposed to turn on your interior lights. I own a C4 and C5 just like you. So I went out to the garage and held in the interior door switch and tried to open the hatch. Guess what it was dead. I held down the hatch switch and then let go of the interior switch and you guessed it the hatch open. Hope this helps! Rob

  • @sirmenken

    In my '86, the console and driver's door switch for the hatch both work, but the passenger door switch doesn't. There is no difference whether the courtesy lights are on or off.

    • @mycorvettelife
      @mycorvettelife  Před 3 lety +6

      Then I'd say you have a bad switch. That's an easy fix.

    • @sirmenken
      @sirmenken Před 3 lety

      @@mycorvettelife Yes, I think you're right. Because it's on the passenger door it hasn't been a high priority but soon I'll have to take off the door panel and check it out. Hopefully it's something really simple like a loose wire, but most likely I'll need to order a new switch.

      No. Mine worked without the courtesy light on before and now stopped to work. I go more for a problem with the doors switches. One of mine just felt inside the driver column and I’m figuring out how the heck I will reach it.

  • @davidgibbons7651
    @davidgibbons7651 Před 3 lety +2

    Just a shot in the dark if you're having trouble with lighting as well it might be a door jam switch. This might also be the problem with the door hatch switches because they may be wired to only work when the door is open. Might not be the switch itself but just a ground.

  • @frankabbott7836
    @frankabbott7836 Před 3 lety +2

    The hatch on my 1998 C4 will not work some times using any of the three buttons. So I have replaced all of the 30 Amp fuse's . That's 3 of them . Changed out the relay and it worked on all three buttons. So changed back the old relay and all three buttons still worked. So I went in the house and had a beer for an hour or so. Tried the buttons again and nothing. The buttons did not work at all. So further inspections revealed that a broken wire attached to the rear strut metal rod may be the issue Black wire with a white stripe. Black wire with a white stripe on the other side. Both are heavy duty wires. Looks like ground wires attached to the struts. Please report back withe your comments. Thank you very much. Bad connection ?

    I am having the same problem with my 94. Door hatch button does not work and radio does not shut off when you open the door. I found another video that indicates it’s the door plunger. I sprayed contact cleaner and WD40 on the switch. I did have to adjust the button with some pliers until it lubricated. Seemed to work. Button now works and radio turns off.

    I can't open my rear hatch (1984) when I push either of the door buttons, I hear a click but it doesnt sound like it's coming from the rear hatch solenoid, it sounds like its under the storage compartments in the back... Also when I push the yellow button there's no click or sound (unless I'm also pushing one of the door buttons, then the yellow button adds an extra umph to the click lol) ...
    I've of course tried to pull on the little manual release cord on the RH (passenger) side of the hatch solenoid but it did nothing. I'm thinking the glass might be stuck to the rubber weatherstripping too.. but I feel like i'd know if that was the only issue. I should hear more of a clunk sound when the hatch 'releases' if it was releasing at all.
    Has anyone seen the wiring diagram and might know where my issue is?
    I'll be changing the fuse like you did shortly. thanks for the insightful video!

    The door ajar switches on mine wasn’t operating as they should it was the hatch one sticking, a little wd40 and it sorted it right out, however I don’t think the door ajar and the hatch release switches affect each other’s operation, very odd!

I tried that trick you shared my manually turning on the interior light with headlight switch then the door hatch switch worked! I wonder if it's the timer board under the dash??

    The reason the instructions are so sparse in the factory service manual is that it assumes you are a factory trained mechanic, and the manual is simply a reference / refresher. Imagine how big it would be, if it included detailed instructions! But it does contain detailed factory specs. Aftermarket manuals like Chilton, Haynes, and Clymer have decent instructions, but are usually not fully comprehensive, either. If you have both factory and aftermarket manuals -- I like Haynes, and there is usually no reason to get all of them because they have the same info -- then you have a fighting chance. Thankfully, we now have You Tube, as well. Back in the day, you were on your own.

    • @mycorvettelife
      @mycorvettelife  Před 3 lety

      In my experience “factory trained” is meaningless. They don’t train them on how to completely disassemble and reassembly every single piece of the vehicle. They teach them basic maintenance and pre-delivery inspection procedures.

  • @scottgivan4493
    @scottgivan4493 Před 2 lety

    I have to disagree with you on the service manual. You just need to learn how to use it. I have used many, many FSM's over the years working on all the different models. Section 8A is a entirely different book. You only bought one book of the set. You will not find the level of correct information on google, that you will find in that manual. Power distribution, harness routing, connector cell info, the list goes on. It has to be added by someone, to be googled. I'm not saying that you can't find your answer, especially if it is for a very common problem. However, calling the FSM garbage? There are a lot of guys out there that need that kind of info. Just tell them you can't make it work for you.
