  • The Dallas Mavericks looked like one of the NBA's most improved teams after the trade deadline, but that improved play was hiding the ugly truth - Doncic's Mavs have given up way too much over the years to still be this mediocre.

If you watch the games, its apparent that there is a clear lack of gameplan. They barely run any plays that isnt a Luka pick and roll. The defence has been bad with the lack of effort and the scheme that had them helping off one pass away. As much as the trades that the Mavricks have done are an issue, at this stage it feels like at least a coaching issue and potetnially a top down organisational one.

I think it has more to do with the facts that they’ve always been Luka dependent since now drafting him and now that they don’t need to anymore, they dunno how to change their style. Even if Kidd wants to, Luka has to agree to fall back and I’m not sure he wants to bc he benefits from this with all the triple doubles/MVP candidacy

I agree that the Mavs front office has botched some moves like letting Brunson go for nothing. But the problem with building with Luka is that he was too good too quickly. So they didn’t get a chance to bottom out multiple years like OKC did with Shai and get all those top 10 picks. Also, the KP trade was justifiable and would have worked if KP didn’t keep getting hurt and he himself said that he was immature and didn’t want to play his role or give it 100% effort. With Brunson, they should get credit for at least drafting the guy. But yes, some of the margin moves have been outright terrible. And I get the play-in team last two years, but they did go to a WCF and beat a 64 win Suns team. And this year’s team wouldn’t be an 8th seed if they weren’t hit with so many injuries.

Tbh a lot of their issues around defense would've been solved with one of 2 way defenders like Siakam and OG. A year or two of tanking wouldn't have hurt either.
Even the Brunson situation does not make any sense because if the contract asked was really that low, Dallas could've given him that contract and then flipped him for assets. I personally think it had to do with more with Brunson's agent, Sam Rose of CAA, being the son of Leon Rose, Knick's president and also former power agent of CAA than what was published.
To everyone saying Dallas is planning for next year, I think whole league will know how to beat em by then- let Luka score 70 but don't let anyone else have a point.

Time and again, the Mavericks have shown no asset discipline. Instead of paying off existing trades and heading into an offseason with a full range of options, they continue to compound on previous moves and thus stall out. Other attempts at trading draft capital to expedite the process around a young player at least waited until their rookie season had been completed before getting aggressive even if they ultimately failed.
Instead of spending Luka's rookie deal accumulating assets, movable contracts, and picks, they've been throwing half-baked attempts out there and it hasn't worked.
I will argue that PHX wasn't stupid, but gunshy in picking Ayton over Luka. Go look at their previous 2 drafts, Josh Jackson, Marquis Chriss, and Dragan Bender. Yikes.
At least the Hawks walked out with Trae Young and a 10th overall, but you can absolutely clown Sacramento for not at least being the team to trade down with Dallas. Even if Bagley still ends up with the Kings, the rookie deal for a fifth overall pick is smaller and the Kings would have added extra draft capital around Fox.

This is a pretty bad video overall... some fair points interspersed with quite a few dumb ones
For one, as is mentioned, most of the FO moves made sense and turned out unlucky. You can't predict Grant picking fights or Porzingis catching the injury bug for the exact seasons he's with you (that also tanked his on-court performance, as he said on Redick's pod).
Secondly, the roster is objectively really well set-up given all the bad luck involved and, with a move for a PoA-defending 3 (Expiring Hardaway, 2 firsts, 4 srps, Green, a swap etc.) and a new coach in the offseason, the Mavs are likely going to have a 3-year or so contending window ahead, which is most of what you can hope for after the Porzingis fiasco. PJ and Gafford have been playing like top-5 players on the team so far, which is worth a first and a swap getting back two 2nd round picks, while _shedding a contract you were given a late first to take on (this is way under appreciated)._ Lively's been electric on the court and might be all-rookie if he wasn't picking up freak injuries - getting punched on the nose, kicked in the knee, literally tackled in Portland... the team health luck has also been atrocious this season.
Thirdly, the small off-season acquisitions have been amazing - from Exum fitting perfectly as the third ball handler and the 3rd best player at times for 2 years, 6 million, DJJ being a legitimate starter for long stretches on a minimum as well as the awesome maneuver on draft night to get an archetypical fit in OMax to develop almost for free.
All-in-all I think the criticism of our FO is pretty unwarranted... all of the moves Nico's made have made sense and either paid off or got objectively unlucky. The only thing I would say is Hardy or THJ should've beed shed at the deadline for assets, but we don't know what was available and what will be there for an expiring 6th man in THJ in the offseason. Their biggest mistake has been and continues to be sticking with mr. wifebeater JKidd.
Say whatever you want, if this team switches coaches, I'm pretty confident you'll be the one eating your words in a couple years.

What you fail to realize is you can’t build a team around Luka period. Luka is in it for himself - Dallas doesn’t have to worry about Luka going nowhere because no one else will tolerate him playing Luka Ball. No one wants to come to Dallas and spend their career in a corner or on the bench. You all are just looking 👀 at his scoring etc not seeing how his scoring is effecting the team as a whole. It’s takes Team Ball 🏀 to win. What PG takes the 1st 5 shots to start a game???? He will never win MVP because the other Candidates can WIN, Play Team Ball and can score just as much without icing out their team. Dallas has a good Team, but those guys are not going to keep running up and down the court and rarely touch the ball 🏀 they are not faucets, they need their rhythm just like Luka needs his…I don’t understand why he hasn’t learned that by now.
The announcers and Barkley on TNT were talking about him not moving the ball and majority of the time there is only one person touching the ball 🏀 and he needs to score less and allow others to help - if Luka don’t have trust in his teammates then WTF is he doing in the NBA - you can’t beat any team by yourself period
