In this video, I flip through my travel sketches from the spring and talk about urban sketching in Spain, France, Malta and Italy. WANT TO SEE MORE? ⤵️ · Instagram: / dannyjhawk
Artists are always their own worst critics. Be assured, your work is SO beautiful. I love your use of white space as well. And, yes, seeing the video snippets are interesting and work great as a reference for the viewer. Looking forward to the next video. Thanks!
You are the best watercolor artist I've ever seen. You should do some tutorial videos. Keep up the great work man, looking forward to see your new posts on Instagram.
Totally Amazing! I’d pay more for a beautiful book of these ‘sketches’ than I would for one water colour of one scene in full. It’s intriguing, mesmerising and full of character and atmosphere. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Your style is so intriguing! I love your use of white space and the blue backgrounds. It makes the page just so interesting. I also love seeing the videos of the places you sketched to compare!
Those are absolutely stunning! Would love to see a video of you explaining your process: how you get started etc… and what are your go to supplies (if you have time for it of course!)
Stunning artwork and I do like the videos, too!! Watching those sketches from Malta, made me realize how much I love that place and I want to go back again soon... Have a great day!!
Really lovely sketchbook tour, I especially liked the Malta sketches. My wife is half-Maltese and we're fortunate to have family there so we return every few years. I've only recently started to play with urban sketching so I look forward to my next visit :) Really love your use of foreground elements to carve out some negative space as a framing device, it's really effective
Such a satisfying video! I love how you turn the scenes into contained little blobs of color that fit so well on the page. I may have to try that one out myself. Thank you for sharing your beautiful art.
I love your honesty and your style. The video clips showing what you have drawn is the best. I haven’t seen that on CZcams before. Keep up the good work. Subscribed.
Wow these are amazing! I was in southern Spain earlier this year and you really captured the feeling of the area in your paintings! I know this is an old video but thanks for sharing, very inspiring for my own art :)
Great art! I agree with chicken strips (chicken strips lol). There's so much life in the colors used in each sketch. I'm trying to figure out what sets his work apart from the other artists I've been viewing. Keep on sharing with us.
Great artwork from your journeys. It's also interesting to see video bits of the references. Would you share with us the art suppliers that you use when sketching and painting outside?
Woow! I was looking for sketchbook videos before I start mine. It looks like I found the perfect one. Do you draw there itself or do you take photos and draw later? Can you please list down your resources (brands of books, paint etc). Please do some timelapse videos for individual paintings. I love to watch them too!
Hey Danny, I love your art work! I love your style and sense of color, it's beautiful. I am very interested in urban sketching and I wanted to know how you got started? As someone who's only been drawing for a year and a half now, what are some fundamentals you find important in urban sketching?
Antonio Salinas Hey Antonio, thanks for your comment! I’d recommend checking out the urban sketchers website to see if there’s a chapter located near you. As for advice, I think the best thing is to just go at your own pace and not worry too much about comparing yourself to other people. Hope that helps and have fun sketching!
My struggle when I try to do photography is that it just never portrays the depth and feel of what I am taking and I am always a little disappointed in the results. I am trying to figure out an answer to that question too. :)
Hi! Great artwork, you gave me a lot of inspiration for outdoor sketching. What equipments/supplies do you take with you? (Beside the normal watercolour-pencil-liner-eraser combo) Do you use an easel?
Rebcebab I usually bring a bag with a watercolor sketchbook, pencil, eraser, fountain pen and watercolor paints. I also usually have a foldable chair on me. Hope that helps!
Great sketches mate, I'd recommend you to visit India, they have marvellous ancient hindu temples....and plent of stuff to draw , you might as well take 2 diaries ...👍🏻
Jeannette Martin Recht herzlichen Dank! Es freut mich, dass dir meine sketches gefallen. Normalerweise brauche ich zwischen 1,5-2 Stunden je nach Größe und Motiv.
Amazing work! I am Maltese but have been living in Spain for the last 17 years!! Found your sketches of so many familiar places for me so beautiful!! What sketchbook do you recommend?? Which one do you use in this video? I want to buy one for urban sketching to use with watercolour and gouache. Any tips would be appreciated! Thanks for sharing your lovely lovely work! 😍😍🤗
Danny Hawk , I think I would feel the same way! Lol. I also do some watercolor and pen work. If you get a chance I would be honored if you would check them out. I do time lapse videos of my paintings.🙂
"You are not allowed to Sketch" must be one of the must stupid sentences ever said. You are literally not hurting everyone. It's not like you are going to build a replica of the Castle or anything. Following the same logic, photos nor videos are allowed, but there are plenty of pictures on the internet so what's the point?
Bryan Martinez it’s not that you are not allowed to sketch, it’s that you are not allowed to sit on anything in the actual castle (not even the floor or benches) or stay in the same place for a long period of time. The Alhambra gets over 2.7 visitors a year, that’s over 7000 visitors per day in the 11 and half hours that is open. The security personnel are always making sure that no crowds form, and the people are constantly moving over, otherwise it would be utter chaos. Even on the gardens there is not a lot of places you can sit, and most of them are in the sun so it’s very very hot (Granada it’s constantly over 40 degrees Celsius in summer) so I completely understand their reasoning. That said, you can book special group visits for art, architecture, etc. students where they are allowed to sketch.
Artists are always their own worst critics. Be assured, your work is SO beautiful. I love your use of white space as well. And, yes, seeing the video snippets are interesting and work great as a reference for the viewer. Looking forward to the next video. Thanks!
London59 Thank you! I think you’re probably onto something. 😅 I guess us artists are always striving for perfection. 😂

These were done with watercolors by Schmincke.
In this book shall we use acrylic painting and water colour paintings?
It's all watercolor :)
Your sketch books turn out so nice. Are they just for you, are do you make them with the thought of selling ?
Creative Rob Currently they’re just for me; I couldn’t bear with the thought of departing from them. But I do sell prints of my sketches. :)
Danny Hawk , I think I would feel the same way! Lol. I also do some watercolor and pen work. If you get a chance I would be honored if you would check them out. I do time lapse videos of my paintings.🙂
This is a sketchbook? These should all be in frames!
What sketchbook do you use?
Kacper Walczak It’s a sketchbook by Hahnemühle.
Umm.... please answer, it would be helpful for my art>>What watercolors and sketchbook do you use? You have GOT to do a live tutorial!!Pleeease!
The watercolors are by Schmincke and the sketchbook is a watercolor book by Hahnemühle.
Adore your work... any chance when you are doing studio work, you could set up a camera to video it, and show us?
Rennie Neasey-O'Connell Thanks! I usually sketch out on location, so it’s a bit difficult to film while drawing. :)
Cool... never mind! I live in hope!
I've been procrastinating on watching this video now for a week cause it makes me feel so bad about my own painting skills...
Melina Rother Oh, don’t feel bad! I think anything is possible with a bit of practice.
