    D'Angelico Premier vs Excel Acoustic Guitar Comparison
    Hey friends, excited to bring you guys this guitar comparison. D'Angelico Guitars have recently been completely revamping their acoustic guitars. Starting in 2019, The Excel series of D'Angelico acoustics were completely revamped. Now in 2020 the more affordably priced Premier Series Acoustics have gotten the same revamp treatment. Much to my surprise, the cheaper Premier acoustics really hold their own in comparison to the Excel series. In this video we take a look at my favorite D'Angelcio acoustic model: The Tammany. We will go over specs and do some sounds test to compare the Excel Tammany to the newly released Premier Tammany. I think you'll be surprised at how good both of these guitars sound! Hope you enjoy the video!

    I've accumulated some D'Angelicos in the last few years. A few of their acoustics from them and the closest to these are a Premier Bowery dreadnought that I bought on impulse on a MF promo. It was surprisingly good. I added a Gramercy XT in the last year. The XT is a lot less showy with a restrained headstock but premium materials and electronics throughout. The sound difference is similar to what you demonstrated here. The XT stands up to friend's upper level Taylors and Guilds. The Premier sounds good plugged in and a bit muted in comparison. I've also got their parlor (Utica, mahogany arch back) and a classical (Malta, cedar top). Both punch above their weight. I gave my Little Martin to my grandson as I was so pleased with the Utica. Thanks for the comparo!

    Hi Patrick , thanks for the comparison . For me the 'Excel' Tammany would be a no brainier , you get an ebony fretboard / bridge - aged white binding , Fishman Presys electrics , plus a case. That seems like a ton of upgrades for 300 bucks over the 'Premier' line. It is a real shame D`a could not add real wood back and sides as opposed to fancy plywood !! , but for 800 bucks you are still getting the wood that matters and a spruce top.
    I must checkout my local GC and see if they would be willing to get one in to play and try + maybe buy , they should.
    The only downside to either of these is the black headstock overlay , black shows scratches like crazy m so that means you will need to be extra carful when changing strings as not to scratch the surface. The Empire truss-rod cover is way cool , but another downside is they did not use open Grover machines on either and they could have added that to the 'Excel' lineup just to make it extra worthy. Still like I said if it plays as great as it looks , I might be buying !! as I am in the market for an acoustic. Thanks again , super review , take care , Dreamer 

    I drove 6 hours to Adirondack Guitar so I could demo some lefty acoustic guitars. Nobody really has lefties anywhere and I get tired of having to buy without playing them. Anyway they had a bunch of D'Angelico's and I fell in love with a Premier Bowery. The tone was so glassy and bright but sounded amazing to fingerpick. I had it for all of 9 months before some asshole stole it at a gig when I was packing up. That was a tough one to get over. I enjoyed playing it so much that I went looking for a Gramercy but pickings are so slim for their lefties now that I couldn't find any. Just found a used Excel and ordered it tonight. This one won't be leaving my home!

      On the original excels they did. I have the original Bowery Excel with solid rosewood back and sides. My guess is they weren't selling well at the price point, $1k, so they knocked the price down and cut costs on the materials. They are now made in China where as the originals were made in Indonesia. I got extremely lucky with mine and only paid $400 for an open box one. It plays so well and I can't find a better sounding guitar sub $1500. I hope they go back to the solid back and sides on the excel soon!

    The excel is completely worth the price. If you want a pro level guitar get it. For me I sold all my guitars but wanted one good acoustic. After watching the original review of the Tammany he did i knew that was the guitar. I love it. Thanks for the amazing demo!

    I have 2 Excels, the Brooklyn and the Bowery and love them both. I tried a couple Premier series but didn't care for them at all. The pre-amp was a huge drop and they sounded too bright for me. But it's all personal preferences and a good player makes them all sound good. They are extremely nice guitars either way and very impressive to look at. Both mine played amazing right out of the box. I didn't have to adjust anything at all, Just tuned and went with it. Nice low action and easy to play. And the company is amazing to deal with if you contact them. I'm still looking at them when they come out and may get a Premier soon, if I find the right one. I already have 40 guitars at my buying is slowing down and I'm more selective, lol.

      Thanks for sharing man, appreciate the comment. Glad to hear from someone who shares my same appreciation of the excel series. Great guitar! Also very refreshing to read a comment expressing a less than favorable opinion in a productive, rational, “it’s all about preference” type of manner! (Never thought I’d see that on CZcams, ha!) Thanks for the comment Tony, keep growing that guitar collection!

    I think these are beautiful guitars for the money. I bought a tea burst 12 string D’Angelo guitar paid about $600 for it didn’t get the case so I ordered a hard shell case that fits it. Perfect paid $120 for it. This guitar is beautiful. It plays like well worth the money. Thanks for the video. I really love mine.👍👍❤️😎🎸

    I've bought the premier a few weeks ago because the price was reduced from 400 to 300 euro. The first one they've sent to me I had to send back because of a problem with the tuner electricity. I ve got another one and the tuner seems to work. But at the first concert there was an issue with the sound, maybe with contact of the plugged in cable, so on the recording and over the pa there wasn't a signal. Now I've tested it sometimes again and the failure didn't appear again but of cause makes me a little nervous if it will happen again in a live situation. So the electrics might be a critical point and for sure they saved money, as it is not a Fishman or other quality well known system. On the other hand the premier guitar sounds nice and the over all quality is OK for the money. It sounds not as full as my Seagull mini jumbo antique but that s maybe a matter of the model with flatter body. The look of the guitar is stunning. The tuning is stable over days.

      China currently. The original release of the excels were Indonesia and the craftsmanship was much better. I have an original Bowery Excel and recently compared it to the current bowery excel, sounds like two completely different guitars. Makes sense because the original excels were solid back and sides

    So the Excel sounded brighter and sweeter, but how much of that is down to construction and materials and how much is due to change in tone due to ageing?

    • @PatrickBreenMusic
      @PatrickBreenMusic  Před 4 lety +1

      My excel is only a year old, so the tone of the guitar hasn't changed very drastically. I do think you will get some deeper tones and more warmth out of the excel. The Macassar Ebony back/sides and Ebony fretboard on the excel offer a warmth and smoothness where the premier sounds a little more snappy and sharp to me, if that makes sense. Honestly, the differences are minimal, and I hope this video showcased as much. I definitely prefer the tone and playability of my Excel, but if you're looking for a more affordable guitar, the value of the premier is fantastic.

  • @scottfishkind5335
    @scottfishkind5335 Před 9 měsíci +1

    Great overview and demo (just subscribed). Acoustically, listening with decent headphones, the sound is pretty close.
    To buy a similar case is probably around $120-$150 so subtracting that from the price of the Excel significantly reduces the difference in cost.
    So for the remaining difference in price it seems that it probably pays to go with the Excel for the nice hardshell case, nicer pickup, Ebony fretboard and bridge, and Macassar Ebony back and side.
    Still, the Premier is an extremely impressive guitar in every respect!
