"I'm not a Mechanic" right up there with "I'm not a Gynecologist but I'll take a look" good job, another source for Silicone oil is Hobby shops, RC cars use it for shocks and diffs.
I recently bought a new fan clutch, as the old one was 30 years old and the Ute was starting to over heat. I thought it deserved one after all that time. It seems to have done the trick, about $100 Aus. On e-Bay. Thanks for the vid.!
I added 3 bottles to my 4.2 2 weeks ago with a Derk pump and I’m very impressed with the results 👌. Glad to see viscous hubs being serviced also don’t see many people doing them
Tip for anyone that is going to do this themselves go to a hydraulic shop and most of them will be able to match up an o ring if you dont want to use silicone. Also for what its worth i saw a guy refill his coupling and the correct amount according to him was tip the section that has the thermostatic valve in it upright and fill it with fluid until it reaches the top and overflows a little, that section is basically a reservoir so when it is full thats enough.
Nice video thanks. I've never thought about the fan clutch before but after an expensive ac hose replacement the mechanic suggested the fan clutch as the probable cause of the burst hose. If only I'd seen your video sooner.
I’m the same as you. I just did mine. It was making noise. I took it back out. I dismounted the fan and remounted it 90 degrees clockwise. The noise went away. So I recommend marking the fan location also.
Fantasic, helped me no end to understand how it works. I like your disclaimer, like you, I too am learning and appreciate you efforts to help me an many others, great job, thank you.
Hi mate, enjoying your content and appreciate it. I had heating issues in my 2006 4.2tdi especially when towing. I replaced the factory fan with a G35 Skyline one which bolts straight on and did the viscous hub service. Just be aware the more oil that’s added to the hub the less likely it will give (stop spinning) when hitting water etc. and will act like a locked solid fan. My oil was pretty clean so I just added one bottle to the amount already there. Like you say Toyota supplies these. I also replaced the thermostat with a DT79A which is for a Mazda Tribute AJ from 2004 - 2006. Finally all of the foam sealing that is meant to be between the radiator and the front panelling that directs the air into the radiator was missing. Happens over time from age, river crossings, gerny washing etc. Just contact cemented new closed cell foam strips into where it should go and it will be sorted. I know it sounds like a lot to do but isn't really and won't break the bank. Also the temps are way down now so it works. If you are having heating issues maybe try just one of these suggestions and see if there is a difference. FINALLY like you found out if you are doing the viscous hub service do not remove the large red/orange O-ring. It will not go back in as it expands as stated. Sorry for such a long spiel but if it helps someone then I'm happy.
@@house-ofhoon ill be putting a new radiator, thermo, water pump in so I wont really know how well it worked 😂😂anything to spend another hour in the shed 👍👍
Here’s a even better tip, don’t use there oil, you can get a thicker wieght oil, silicone diff oil for rc cars. All the cooling then. Mines like a bloody jet it locks up twice as hard when it’s on full load the fans bassicly locked up to engine rpm 😂🌬🌬🌬💨💨💨💨
Awesome! Ill go search through the settings. Unfortunately I've got a fair bit of footage already recorded but it'll be good for all new recorded footage. I really appreciate your technical help mate!
@@house-ofhoon I hear ya. Did you see any cracks in your stock fan around the middle? Mine was cracked to shit and more or less one river crossing away from shitting the bed.
MUST READ PSA! Can I just say. My patrol NEVER overheated. Aftermarket turbo, big lift, and towing big boat @110 was fine… I replaced the OEM fan (as it was cracked) with an eBay/online auto parts one. Didn’t drive it for months and now it over heats on highway at 110 empty!? Wtf! THE NEW CHINESE FANS MANUFACTURED POORLY! The 1/3 of the outer blades has a NEGATIVE pitch angle. The inside of the fan is sucking the outside of the fan (where the majority of the blade side) is blowing! Online auto parts have admitted they sold thousands of these. So how many patrols are overheating due to dodgy fans since all the original Nissan ones cracked? When you put Chinese vs OEM fan side by side it’s obvious but only if your looking for it! @5:57 you can see your entire blade is a positive blade angle which is good :)

Honestly, that response from parts stores or hardware stores is the one I get all the time in my country.😮💨

Haha! I'm sure it'll be like new then!
I usually use 2 to 2.5 bottles depending on application.
Severe application is about 3.
Worked for me.
Thanks for the insite mate
Been servicing my viscous fans on my landcruiser for years. Do it the same way you did it and never had a problem cool stuff
Cheers mate! Definitely a good thing to keep up 👍
Maybe you could use treadmill belt lubricant? that's 100 percent silicone oil.
Interesting! 🤔

Nice never thought of that
What weight did you use ???
Can't remember the units for viscosity but the recommendation is to use viscosity silicone oil of 1000 units.
I got a UFI fan and hub coz my factory one was cooked. Massive difference
Yea I've heard they are bloody good mate
do you have settings to disable spherical aberration/fish eye effect for the recording camera..?
To be honest, I have absolutely no idea. I use a GoPro hero 9 and just push the record button 🤣 I'll have to look into it!
@@house-ofhoon it has... it will be better if you could switch those settings... will make image more square and pleasant viewing experience

Hey mate. Any progress updates on the viscous hub?
It definitely worked. If I was to do it again, I'd probably put a 3rd bottle of oil in though
What happens if I bore it and engage the fan permanently to the axe? Would this solution destroy the belt?
I've heard of people locking up the fan hub and it has not caused an issue
@@house-ofhoon Thanks. Sounds good. I hope so as well :)
Just bin it and grab the quikazz fan, no oil needed, bigger fan, better hub, better cooling.
Slight price difference mate. If 2 bottles of silicon oil work, then I've just saved a chunk of money. If not, it's been a fun and cheap experiment

@@Nick-sd7um na, mine seems to be in reasonable condition. Definitely a good thing you replaced yours if it was that bad 👍
Hi mate did this make a difference?
G'day. Yes it definitely made a difference on my patrol. It's not as good as an aftermarket hub and fan set-up, but it's also nowhere near the price
Thanks mate. Keep the videos coming 👍
It must be a Nissan thing!
I was told it's a Mitsubishi and Nissan thing lol. Toyota's aren't completely immune though
