There are film franchises, and then there are shared universes.
Halloween, Scream, The Exorcist are all successful horror franchises. For the most part, they follow one continuous story. Their sequels, re-quels, and reboots all tend to center around the same villain we’ve known since the beginning.
But The Conjuring is different. Every new film pulls on threads from real-life hauntings , creating a wider universe - much like the Marvel Cinematic universe. Except instead of building out its roster of heroes, The Conjuring builds out a roster of villains.
The Conjurings universe is based on the case files of two of the most famous paranormal investigators of all time: Ed and Lorraine Warren. Whether or not their stories were 100% true is debatable, but one thing is clear: They make for great entertainment.
Their case files have been used as the basis for horror films since the ‘70s, but they really gained traction in 2013 with The Conjuring.
In the 10 years since, the Conjuring has become the highest-grossing horror franchise of all time.

The filmmakers behind The Conjuring really leaned into “the truth” in their storytelling. But, like any paranormal tale, the truth is complicated, and often based on hearsay. While their stories make for great entertainment, should we believe Ed and Lorraine Warren?
Aja Romano, culture writer at Vox, dives deep into their history to explain just that - and does some debunking in the process: bit.ly/3Sn2LNU
No sign of The Conjuring Universe slowing down?
It seems almost dead and forgotten to me because nobody talks about it anymore and almost no new movies about it get released anymore.
After The Conjuring 3 came out it was like they just lost interest in the Conjuring universe.
After The Conjuring 4 comes out the Conjuring universe will probably be dead sadly.
I first heard of them.. watching a Documentary about the Amityville... The real murders.. etc.. they showed the Raggedy Anne doll..
The movie one was always funny.. seriously who would ever get near that doll
The part where Anabelle said its "Anabelling time" and Anabelled all over the house sent chills down my spine truely conjuring.
💀💀💀😭
Dead joke, it's boring now.

The most funny thing is that the Warrens proudly showed a copy of the Necronomicon, not knowing that this book doesn’t actually exist. The publication was a kind of joke.
Yeah, they got exposed as frauds in enough cases that I really dont feel like you can even trust the ones which produced corroborating witnesses
Are you telling me that the 'paranormal investigators' weren't entirely truthful?
They were certified frauds
They are the biggest grifters on the planet. Ghosts aren’t real. It’s ridiculous.
sounds like a paranormal object from parallel universe to me.
I love the part in the most recent Conjuring when the nun said “I am inevitable”
And like a portal opened up and Ed and Lorraine and a bunch of their friends ran through it with, I don't know, crucifixes and whatnot. SO epic :D
Ohhh, was she looking for the infinity horns?
i loved when the nun said "It's nunning time!" and nunned all over the pleace
this funny asf 😂😂
That one time Lorraine had to use her powers to look into possible futures where they beat the nun and it took her 14million possible futures just to find the 1
“Im not gonna stare at it” proceeds to pause the video so that the audience stares at it 💀
I remember watching the conjuring in the theater. It was the production that made it good. It was one of the best scary movies i've seen, but only because the production, not because of the "true story" or whatever. It was just something different
it's something different because it's the truth. Scary movies based from a real life story always become a big hit because rn we have a lot of horror movies that always prioritize " cheap jumpscare " and just want to make people scared, but The Conjuring franchise is different because they prioritize different things other than jumpscare. People love movies based on true story like Oppenheimer, even though that movie is kinda hard to understand for casual watcher like me.
The set dressers/prop makers are the real heroes in the Conjuring stuff. I kinda wish there were more establishing shots and screen time for that stuff.
The Curse of La Llorona is also part of The Conjuring universe
I think I’d like the Conjuring more if it wasn’t based on two of the biggest fraudsters in the world
i think I'd like the conjuring more if it was scary
I think I'd like the conjuring more if it was actually good and entertaining
I'd like the conjuring more if James Wan directed them all.
I actually lke that part. its funny that they are fraudsters but we are still want to believe
Hey they made that bag, don't be jealous.
I love the first Conjuring. It's one of my fav horror films of all time.
Yes 100% agree! The first was the best one.
It's a great ghost story. Love it too
What else do you recommend from the universe
I only watched 1 & 2 😀
@@OmarMohamed-yr7kj I liked Annabelle: Creation as well. I've not watched Nun 2. Rest are okayish.
@@adityavardhanjainThe Nun 2 isn't scary at all

The horror of what its become is scarier than any horror movie
Nice one 😂
Wow, I didn’t think it was possible, but the editing on this one is a step above! So many great visuals and a really cohesive style
I love the part in the movie when Annabelle said, "I can do this all day.''
When does that happen and which movie?
@@syndicalistcat3138 it's a joke from capt america's line in capt. amaerica civil war
Or the part where Lorraine said "You took everything from me" and Annabelle replied "I don't even know who you are".
That scene was pure chills
I wish they made more movies on the hundreds of other intriguing haunted items in the house of the warrens. Like a movie on crooked man would be amazing.
They planned on it after Conjuring 2 but made The Nun instead, Crooked Man has been cancelled since then
@@har795 thats sad. I still hope they make more movies on the other cases
They will be making it. They planning to make all the Warrens stories.
At the end it was mentioned they sometimes went abroad to solve supernatural cases, i think that would be a really cool movie. A fish out of water horror movie featuring ghosts and entities from other countries.
@@ColonelBloodyKurtz you mean like when they left the US to go to the UK in conjuring 2 xD
Yessss i loved seeing this video come up on my feed!! Thanks for the deep dive. It makes me appreciate these movies even more than I already have 😊
i love this movies explained segment.
I met Lorraine Warren back in 2013 at one of the last tours they ran of her Occult Museum at her house. Saw the real Annabelle doll and they even showed us the actual exorcism footage of Maurice! They stopped running the tours shortly after that due to Lorraine's health.
Nicely made video
I still can't believe about of all the movies that "The Nun" has made the most money and it's objectively the worst out of the whole series
Agree!
The conjuring and Insidious were my favorite horror film at all time.
Am I getting Deja Vu, or this video is already uploaded to the internet
I have seen the similar video of nerdlogic
Yes! Now I know where I have seen the video
Hot Take: I think all these movies are kinda just "meh" 🤷
coldest take of all time lol
Yeah very mid films
Just in time for Halloween 🎃 👻
I'm waiting for another helping of the conjuring in a full reboot!
Wish this were longer.
Personally, I really love the focus on storytelling in all these movies.
I love the Conjuring series. Annabelle is my favorite. I haven't been scared watching a horror movie in a long time but that one made me sleep with the tv on for days lol
Try Blair witch project and you wont go into the woods alone for a year, guaranteed. Preferably watch it alone at night in a dark room like any horror movie should be watched.
So they make a living by talking to air and acting?
Known as clairvoyant...a.k.a. bull💩 artist 😅
People like that exist you know. They just don't show up often.

The Conjuring is still my favorite horror movie of all time. Love that movie!
The first Conjuring was GOLD! The rest are redundant and predictable.
That's really the worst quality of these movies. Even if the horror and visuals are fun, the predictability hurts the suspense a LOT.
That first movie was so perfectly horrifying
I LOVE YOU VOX
Don't worry, I love horror and thriller movies but I can never sleep with the lights off after.
Whats the website called for their most investigated cases??
2:13 that jump-scare almost made my soul left my own body
I'm brave because I don't watch horror movies like never
Love you Vox great story
Man they gotta do a movie about that freaking werewolf
I'm not really a fan of horror movies, they seem predictable and not at all scary to me, since there's obviously no such thing as demons or ghosts of whatever. But of course it's great when other people enjoy it :) and making a video to discuss a big horror movies franchise could be very interesting. But I very much disagree with the idea of calling the Warrens an actual clairvoyant and demonologist, perpetuating the idea that these are those are somehow real professions and that ghosts and other nonsense are real. I understand that telling the truth about them (they are clearly con artists) wouldn't fit well within this video if you want to keep a spooky vibe, but I would still prefer facts rather than giving them any kind of legitimacy.
Yeah I was at least hoping for some kind of reference to them being con artists, even if it wasn't the focus of the video.
there are good horror films that aren’t about ghosts. Horror has a weird stigma to it so often good horror films are referred to as thrillers. 🤷♀️
I think most possessions them days was undiagnosed medical conditions that could easily be explained today , the so called exorcisms.
Nothing is scarier than human beings!
Why is Vox promoting these scamsters
Sorry but the video is too short i was expecting more 😢
This is even more trivial than the MCU, well done.
thanksssss
Saw X was Goated Tobin Bell better get a oscar and there should be a horror category or something if not already 🐐
That is slasher film
goated is a stretch lol
I'm personally a big fan of movies and I love this series, and honestly I would love to work on one of these.
I hope you keep on doing this for a long time.
OMG I LOVEEE The Conjuring Universe soo much!! I'm glad they made this franchise 😁😁 I didn't know Ed & Lorraine Warren or Annabelle before the movie... So this was a good exposure for them.
Miss Annabelle does not want to asssociated with this. She wants to be left alone and may she rest in pieces.
Can't believe you didn't highlight Amityville Death Toilet.
Hats-off for your dedicative research work for this video!!! You have re-watched such doomed movies and I can understand the psychological stress you could have gone through..!!!!
I know the Warrens are notorious fraudsters but I absolutely adore the Conjuring movies. Are they good? The first one is, and the others, while not amazing, are still pretty freakin fun! To me, they're the cinematic equivalent to a cheap haunted house during Halloween. I'm not gonna be super impressed by them, but I'll have a lot of fun. I say keep em coming!
A lot of the success comes down to James Wan. All the other movies in the franchise not directed by him are terrible even for horror standard
Right there with you 😂
I love your videos, i understand the message, but to be honest, none of those movies has gotten a single scream from me.
Same here. And the Nun was the worst and most unscarry horror movie I ever saw. Trying to picture this "universe" where "best" movies are meh, and the worst are pure thrash as something that will make you sleep with you lights on, make this channel a little bit less credible for me
U never seen THE BOY huh
The MCU and fast and furious aren't the pinnacle of their genres either. All that matters to the studio is profitability and that they are.
I'm sceptical of any supposedly true story about the supernatural but hey a movie's a movie and the Nun was pretty fun.
I had to double check if it's april 1 or nov 1 today
The joke's on Vox cuz my bed doesn't have space down there hahaha
That is one happy marriage, ngl.
It's at times like these that I wish the "Dark Universe" hadn't failed
The MCU ROI has been in deficit for the past couple of years but I don't see the TCCU going stale anytime soon.
Already sleeping with my lights on!
4:15 scared the shx out of me!!!
Just imagine their just exposed 2 famous ghost in that film annabelle and valak, and if u think again the artifact that had been exposed just like tens from that movie and they had like hundreds of them and had a story of themselves. And imagine the real people or victim from each artifact still alive, and they told a story about that. its gonna be fascinating mind of the story of it😅
You do realize that Warrens and their stories are fraud, right?
Hey Vox can you please do a video on why fonts like Times New Roman are used so often, when sans serif fonts are so much more legible?

Stop credulously repeating this "truth" line and making it seem like they were documenting facts. Do you care about the truth enough to read the criticism in their wikipedia entry?

The Conjuring is a masterpiece 💖
I wish someone would do movies on SCP Foundation
I like conjuring movies. I do think as a universe is second best to Marvel cinematic universe. 😅.. i want them to keep making more.
Gee, I wonder if anyone else thought about creating a cinematic universe around horror movies🤔
1:50 brings a level of campy cheesiness that is by far the scariest thing about this video. This fool looks and sounds like he's trying to talk me into an MLM scheme. Smh Vox.
From the creators of ‘this is the dark souls of (something)’
I get it when someone like these movies and find it entertaining and cool. But when they call it a scary movie i am just lost. I mean apart from 15 years old and younger who finds these movies scary. ( Maybe except the first movie its was actually good)
I guess I'm the only one in the known universe who has never heard of this movie.
After watching this video , my electricity bill is also very high.
I don't know what happened to Stephen King's universe
Great video! The Warren's have so many stories to learn about
Movies huh??
They feed on our fear 😅
So I guess what you're saying is it's prolific, long winded, and strictly mediocre? Yeah, that sounds about right.
"The truth is complicated"!? 🤔
4:13 this jump scare is not “extremely creative” since it is an imitation of a jump scare from the 1977 movie ‘Shock’
It’s disappointing vox didn’t use their actual job “con artists”
Did anyone else think the thumbnail for this video was Elizabeth Holmes, for a split second? I mean, she's already creepy looking, but 😨😨
Ive seen lots of horror movies, and I think that Conjuring 2 is the best horror movie of 21st century. Sad to see how bad movies they're making now though. Especially how they they ruined the nun character feels bad. It had so much potential.

The factual evidence from the Warrens is fascinating and downright frightening when you get into the details and the way they produced this franchise makes it truly a masterpiece of horror and film in general. As another commenter stated, he Conjuring and Insidious movies are their favorites, they too are mine. Slasher flicks never seem to do much except make you see that people can't run when scared and those who do choose to fight, no matter how big or strong simply can't defend themselves against the protagonist. Supernatural horror on the other hand is something that is unseen, or cannot be explained by science and the natural laws, which makes it delve deeply into our psyche.
The warrens are probably the most successful con artists of all time I swear
Ok, but can it beat Ganji Chudail?
Shane from Watchers taunted and shouted at the Annabelle doll tho, so idk
I love to watch horror movies but with lights on
Oh God I could really use that ghost (I don't have any friends)
I cant stand this franchise but it certainly has had a big impact on the genre
