In Japan, democracy began to permeate the country around the beginning of the 20th century. So it is strange that there has been no change.
There was a convention that the emperor always approved the decisions of the Diet. After World War I, universal suffrage was held and the majority party assumed executive power.
In the 30s all parties were dissolved, the parliament ceased to function, and the country became a military dictatorship.

    • @jakebhenry2228
      @jakebhenry2228 Před 4 měsíci +5

I think they labeled it as such because even though these were liberal reforms and Japan had all the hallmarks of a democracy it did not have the most stable checks and balances system. Japan in the later 20’s and 30’s was mauled by political assassinations on leading political figures and such acts were allowed to continue even into 1936 when, while the army started an invasion in China, a pacifist faction was elected into power only to be removed by Tojo’s military takeover. The military also effectively ruled the empires foreign policy and also its overseas possessions with totalitarian methods which further weakened their score.

Even countries featured on this map, like Canada and Australia, had segregationist laws. The census vote in countries like the United Kingdom and the Netherlands continued to exist until well into the 20th century, but on this map it seems as if they were already full democracies at that time. @@MHG796 It depends. Better for what? For the lives of the common people or for the strenght of the country? Because in Germany they literally voted for autocracy between WW1 and WW2 in order to become a military world power.
The democracy is just as good as the decisions of the voters while the autocracy is just as good as the decisions of the leaders whose sole job is to make (good) decisions.
The best argument against democracy is a 5 minutes talk with the average voter. Look at USA to see how smart the average voter is. You'll notice they vote the democrat party because they want to support LGBTQ and the illegal immigrants, NOT because they care about the economy or the influence of USA.
Democracy vs autocracy isn't as simple as which is the better option. In democracy you need all people to be smart and care about their country and themselves. In autocracy you need leaders to be smart and care about their country and their people.
I never aimed to make you think autocracy is better than democracy because I cannot convince myself of that, but only that democracy is not better than autocracy.

As for in which country I prefer to live inI prefer the one in which my cuktural background already alligns best without needing change and in which I can live a decent live. As a Romanian programmer, I like living in Romania. Russia doesn't look like a bad option either. Not nearly as bad as most of the Western countries. This comparison is for me, not for everyone.
As for democracy being the best, it seems to be self destructive in Western Europe because of the many always left no matter what voters and the left wing parties not tackling illegal immigration. There are also the dumb Just Stop Oil protesters especially in UK so all the more reason I wouldn't go there.
Denmark, Sweeden, Finland and Norway seem to take the children of legal immigrant Christian couples on the argument of "avoiding their indoctrination". Seems like you can't think whatever you want if you want to have a familly there, right? Or in Canada where you risk having your bank account frozen if you speak too loud against Trudeau's policies. Where is that freedom you were talking about? Only conditioned depending on beliefs? Yeah, I've seen that in China as well. Do not speak against the regime and you'll be fine. As for USA, I see they have a lot of illegal immigrants raiding stores. I don't see this in China, North Korea or any actual dictatorial country. Or the shootings in USA? Yeah, I'd rather stay far from those as well. Maybe you don't mind the risk, but I do. Different cultural background means different opinions.
Both democracy and autocracy would be great if only both the common people and the leaders would care for both the common people and the country. Too bad that's not the case.
I agree Switzerland is closer to perfect democracy due to allowing citizens to directly contest the law, but because of the average opinion there I wouldn't want to move there. I can't imagine what it's like to be forbidden to have more than 19°C in your home because your country supports a war.
Democracies are just as good as their people are smart and autocracies are just as good as their leaders are smart. I do not agree will all that Churchill said, but only with what can be tested.

Below, I give just one good reason why my country is currently a "flawed democracy" (there is much more to say about it, and there are probably things we don't know).
This year, the president has cheated to be reelected. How? Just like in most democraties, there is a debate before elections. Our president said he wouldn't attend the debate usually organized before the first round, and then, the TV channel that was supposed to organize it, cancelled it, and replaced it with monologues so he could participate without having to justify his nonsensical program and past actions. What should have happened, in a real democracy, is the TV channel doesn't care about this clown and keeps organizing a real debate with the candidates who want to attend it. At the second round, he attended the debate probably because his opponent was a nationalist that isn't too dangerous for him in a debate.

Free elections, yes. Equal chance, not really. People have a cultural background and it will influence our decisions ragarding the vote. This can give a marxist progresivist party little to no chance to get a majority a country where any religion is taken seriously. Same for the chances of a party which roots its ideas in any religion in a country where atheism bias is more popular. Even life doesn't give equal chance to different people.
To me it is simple: full democracy as it was initially meant to be means the will of the people is law regardless of what external sources say (this includes UN and all the international entities, not only other countries). Whether it has one party or more is a different topic. It's really funny that different people add different stuff to make the definition biased for their political views.

Yes, As Lenin said Freedom in capitalist society always remains about the same as it was in the ancient Greek republics: freedom for the slaveowners. Owing to the conditions of capitalist exploitation, the modern wage slaves are so crushed by want and poverty that “they cannot be bothered with democracy,” “cannot be bothered with politics”; in the ordinary, peaceful course of events, the majority of the population is debarred from participation in public and political life. “ - Vladimir Lenin, Russian politician, anti-war activist, one of the leaders of the October Revolution.

So, my question is: deveopment is the result of democracy, or democracy is the result of development? or, maybe we may rephrase the question as follow: if ask a poor man to choose between democracy and development, which will hechoose? At least for me, I am tiried of the fancy words such as freedom, democracy, I like the real development that changes my living quality to a better level.
