Why not also make it illegal for anyone to contribute to the Supreme Court justices?
I think the suggested $50 limit is to allow them a normal life where a friend might take them out for a meal. Obviously that would still be up for corruption but far less likely, especially if it is worded so that is the maximum allowed annually from any one person or company.
Thomas said the million dollar trips and the recreational vehicle were ok cause they were gifts.

It is not just Alito and Thomas, Chief Justice Robert's wife is a legal headhunter for conservative lawyers, and, has made millions. It is high time that the limit on gifts, is the same for all federal office holders. If they can not live on what they make, and, the lucrative jobs that some of their spouses have, let them resign.

Wow, both Congressman Raskin and Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez are really impressive. They are both very articulate and clearly care about American democracy over-and-above partisan politics. Not that they aren't above scoring political points when the opportunity arises. But they do it with integrity and respect for their institution which can't be said of the Clown Posse that is the modern Republican party.

In my world, if I don't want to work for a particular salary, I don' accept the job. If Thomas is unhappy with the 300k he gets from 'WE, the people" - then he should resign and go get a lobbying gig or a corporate post and get his millions and millions of perks over there.

Jamie Raskin is one of the most earnest, knowledgeable and erudite scholars of Constitutional law we have in government now. I look forward to the day when I (a New Yorker) can vote for him. AOC is a tireless, brilliant advocate and wise beyond her years--I'm very proud that she represents the neighborhood in which I grew up.

There's also no binding ethical code for federal District judges. In the Southern District of Florida, Judge Cannon is ruling in the criminal case of the person who recently raised her from obscurity to her lifetime position of power and prestige. This is a gross conflict of interest on its face.

This case opens up a larger question. Should people who want to purchase a gun be subjected to a drug test? The question on the form releases the gun seller from liability, but the public is subjected to the whims of a person who is on illegal substances with a dangerous weapon. And now it's clear that many applicants are lying on the those applications, so the question by itself is not enough.
Should be. There are hundreds of thousands pot smokers who lie on the form. Even if it is legal in your state it is not legal on the Federal level.

The Judiciary Act of 1869 set the number of Supreme Court Justices at 9. The population of the USA in 1870 was just under 39,000,000 . The population of the USA in 2024 is just over 336,000,000. The power of the Justices during this period has thus increased ten fold just how many people they get to dictate decisions too. There are way to few people with way too much power. The whole construction of the Supreme Court needs to be reconsidered. Ethical restrictions and term limits will make little difference in modifying the insular nature of this insult to an alleged democracy.

During my years as a lowly civil servant for both Indian Health Service and the VA, I was held to a stringent code of ethics and conduct including the Hatch Act and innumerable regulations. It seems to me that someone who’s a part of the most prestigious court in the country should be held to a HIGHER standard. Back then the gift limit was $15 and company reps could bring us donuts once in a while.

Eventually the two main parties should compromise on a way to make the S court equally represented by both parties, and include one independent.

Yep. The highest court should have the highest standards regarding ethics and impartiality, as well as experience and qualifications. And even the appearance of bias should require recusal. I make legal decisions all day in my job, (unemployment insurance) and if i think i might possibly know the person in the claim, i have to send it to someone else.

I'm sure most of us at some time will go out for a meal with friends were one person is paying for others for some reason, such as celebrating a new job. Then most people will get presents from friends for birthdays, Christmas etc. The $50 limit is a sensible one that allows these normal gifts without having to declare everything.

In my local county in CA, where I practice only rarely now, I have seen judges turn down a plate of homemade cookies for the court staff - given by a juror. I’ve seen judges not allow a clerk to accept flowers from a lawyer. Granted, we had a huge scandal 25 years ago, with three excellent judges imprisoned for accepting gifts, so maybe it’s a tender subject. But I like the way we do it here. Just zero gifts.

@@nlwilson4892 Actually, no it’s not that different sometimes. Gifts from “friends” are highly problematic for judges, especially new wealthy friends connected with interests before the subject court, as in Thomas’ case.
@@BlindSquirrel425 That is why if first needs a sensible limit which is in line with the sort of limits friends and family might normally give and for judges to recuse themselves if they have received any gifts, or have other personal connections with someone involved in the case. There also needs to be an oversight body that makes sure they do recuse when necessary.

Sorry, this guy is so wrong. As a parent, you want to help your kids face the tough consequences of their actions. They do wrong. You stand by them as they get punished. You don't let them get away with it.

We have two very bad apples on the bench. "The Judges, both of the supreme and inferior Courts, shall hold their Offices during good Behaviour,"
No word of "impeachment" and the standards set in that method of removal. No word of how this is supposed to be done by the justices / judges themselves. Since they are nominated by the president, and approved by a simple majority of the Senate on the belief they will be on "good Behaviour", just use the same process in reverse. President investigates the justices / judges, just like an ongoing security clearance, can use the same procedure and standards. The president sets his 'bar' and forwards his recomendation to the Senate. The Senate can hold hearings or whatever they like to do, then have a vote. Simple as that. No, SCOTUS does NOT get a say in that, just like they have no say in the nominating and vote process. Eliminate Thomas and Alito for clear corruption, bribe taking. No need to bring any political factor or refusing to recuse into the picture.
