  • It was the year man walked on the moon for the first time, the legendary Woodstock festival took place and the very first Boeing 747s reached for the skies. In that same year, half a century ago, Ford’s Capri hit Europe’s roads for the first time.

I start my apprenticeship at Ford Cologne just after the start of the production of the Capri in 1969 too and was in employment with Ford for about 49 years. I saw a lot of Ford Models during and after the Capri production. But not me alone, a lot of colleagues which were contemporary witness of the Capri production from 1969 - 1984 get goos bumps and wet eyes see and remember to the Capri. And also not me alone answer "I had one and I love this car". It was for me by the way the first "new buyed car" after my apprenticeship and the first earned money. A Capri '73 1.6 XL.

      @David Galea
      Hello David,
I have this video of the Capri Production, no doubt. But knowing Cologne Plant well, this vid presents different areas, which you can see on Google Maps in the north part of the city Cologne, direct located at the river Rhine.
First part if the vid presents engine production in the 1962 founded new plant W on the north west part of the whole plant area.
Body stamping and welding was in Plant F and K and painting in K too. Plant U was at that time the galvanic plant for chromeplating of bumpers and also is until today the location of the central lab, where I was educated in material testing. Plant Y in the north was the final assembly of painted bodies with engines, axles, wheels interior.
Plant R was the forge and aluminum die casting, where I was located after my education in total for nearly 30 years in the lab. In 2002 I got a new function in final assembly Y and until my retirement und supplier QM Service. Other plants are for transmission manuacturing.
Today all the plants are doing more or less the same, apart from the chrome plating, which was closed with the introduction of plastic bumpers and by enviromental requirements for the whole automotive with their previous assembled steel, chrome plated bumpers.
And to answer your question: I am not in the vid.

The 1971 Capri 2 litre ohc was my first new car. I paid just over $2100 cdn for her and it was the best money I ever enjoyed spending. My close friend bought the 1972 2.6 litre v6 and we tweaked the compression and induction so much that on a late night test run, we duly surprised a passing Dodge Superbee pilot as we pushed on to 100 mph.......then shifted into 4th gear! Great job Ford of Europe. I wish I could own one again.

My brother owned the model after this, the RS 3100, which had more power and handling options.. 49 were shipped to Australia in the mid 70s with a view to racing them, and then abandoned the idea and sold them off to the public.. fantastic car.. front and rear air dam, black leather upholstery.. tweaked by Ford in Cologne.. great little car,. and very rare in this day and age.

Better not. It would be front wheel drive, with a diesel or electric or a suv - not the coupe like the car was before :P
A modern Capri is called...... Jaguar F-type :P The XK had the same rear window but was too big - F-type is like a modern Capri version - it would have to be simmilar price too :/

The editing of this makes it seem like the engine noise has been dubbed on. I hope that is the actual 2600 sound. It sounds amazing....alive!

nw8000 Lucky for me, I did! My second car at the end of senior high...an orange ‘76 with rostyles, 2.3 liter, five speed manual and loads of fun! What I wouldn’t give for an ‘86 2.8 injection, or 280 Brooklands! You need to deliver on that promise sooner than later, they’re becoming a super rare sight nowadays :(

Always liked the Capri.. I owned an immac 2 litre laser but my defining memory of them was watching my bro spank the arse of a"mr I'm faster than anyone" fiat 130 tc mirafiori in one of his many 2.8 injection capri's he owned back in the late 80s early 90s.good times.

Couldn't agree more, great cars that really allow you to drive with all your senses. I love mine on road and track and seeing this makes me want to make it look as good.

There would probably be quite a bit of excitement in the enthusiast community if Ford were to license a reproduction bodyshell of the first generation Capri. The Mustang has been seeing renewed interest since the release of New shells.

certainly was a wonderful car, I wish they would still build them today

  • @colonelcatastrophe4821

And on another note, these cars and their wonderful lucas wiring system were not overly great! I really do love them and still have a couple of mk 1's.........like no other great vid!

Such a clever blend of Escort and Cortina (Taunus) parts, you'd never pick it from the styling, especially with that looong low bonnet. Good for carrying the straight 3.0 L 6 cylinder from the Granada. Yowza.

A 3,0 straigh 6 Pinto engine was planned. But the 1973 fuel crisis killed it off before it came. Granada 3,0 was always the Essex V6.
