Last week, we ended with Corey doing a walk around and finding a broken leaf spring right before we were leaving Corpus Christi, Texas, to head to the Lippert Getaway in Pine Mountain, Georgia.
This was our second broken leaf spring, but this time, it was our fault. We messed up by not changing the front springs when we changed out both rear springs after the first one broke.
Now, we know what you guys are thinking…it is because we are over weight. That just isn’t the case, though. It was our concern as well after we broke the first one, so we weighed ourselves immediately and found that we were actually under weight and since then, have removed even more weight from the rig.
It could have been the really horrible road that we took to get into the campground we were staying at or maybe it was just a bad batch of springs. Either way, we should have changed all four when the first one broke, and we recommend that you change them all if this ever happens to you.
Our main pieces of advice we have for you now that we have gone through this twice are:
Think outside the RV box! We found our springs at a spring shop last time and a boat trailer shop this time. Don’t get boxed in to thinking that you have to use an RV shop or dealership to get parts or help.
Have a good (but still small) bottle jack. We did not have this the first time we had to change the leaf springs, and it made this time go much faster!
If you have a travel trailer, consider adding a leveling system (we have the Lippert Ground Control 3.0 TT Leveling Kit: amzn.to/2ZYET7o ). It is a game changer on it’s own, but it also makes jobs like these 10 times easier!
This year was the 2nd Annual Lippert Getaway, and we were beyond excited to share with the Scouts what we had been dreaming of and working to create with Lippert and our friends, Sean and Christina Conlon from @pawsforlove : seRV With Purpose! seRV is a volunteer initative connecting RVers with non-profits across the US to create opportunities to give back while traveling. You two are a couple who can't help to talk over each other. A well-oiled relationship, when you know the thought of the other, when you finish each other sentences, that's the secret of a great relationship. One of the reasons I like your videos is the interplays between yours and your kids. I wish that would be more families like yours. You are a role model.

I put sumo springs on my trailer. They really help taking a lot of strain off the leaf springs. Also rides a lot better and takes some of the roll out when going through curves.

My wife and I love to take the time to make the journey just as much fun as being at our ultimate destination. We are retired, so we can take all the time we want on the way to wherever we are heading... we follow the weather and simply stay put if conditions are ugly, we rarely make reservations ahead of time...I like not being obligated to be anywhere at a specific time. It is pretty relaxing to know that our house is behind us, and so we are never without a place to rest, relax, eat, or sleep!

The walk around is very important. I keep an infra red thermometer in the drivers door of the truck. Whenever we stop I check the temperature of all the trailer tires, I also aim it between the spokes on the rims and check the hub temperature.
For travel days if we are in an hurry to get somewhere 600 mile days are OK, but normally like to keep it around 300 to 350. I don't tow at night If I can avoid it.

We like to drive as far as possible to enjoy our destinations! We once drove 1K miles in a day headed from our home in Ohio going to Glacier NP. Also we partnered with Timbren springs and are testing a prototype spring for our Fifth wheel. Simply because I don’t want my springs to flatten out or break. Love your videos-Mike

broken leaf springs carrying the load is great but i installed 6000# air bags to help take the load off most of the wear and tear off the leaf springs. 2 bags per axle. since i did this my leaf springs work and act great with out problems , not saying it may happen but ? on the bumps on the road are cushioned because of the air bags instead of hard hits without them.

We broke a leaf spring in our last travel trailer and our RV tech assured us that they last about 4-5 years with regular use. Steel work-hardens and the more you cycle it up and down the less flexible it becomes and eventually it snaps.

Our first RV was a 5th W and we broke the right rear leaf spring shackle, after only four months of being on the road full-time. And then the left-hand side rear leaf spring shackle broke three weeks later. I noticed it as we were going down the road and the fifth wheel was traveling behind us cockeyed. I learned right away that if it doesn’t look right stop and check it out. After the second one broke, we were able to find a welding shop that redid the brackets with much better metal and much better welds.
We are in the RV camp of out by nine and in by three as much as possible. But I do like your idea of traveling at night when there are not as many people on the road.

Yes, I’m a night shifter too. I worked 2nd and 3rd shift for decades. I love to drive at night and there are a few things/ tricks that help make it even more enjoyable. I tilt my side view mirrors down and outwards just enough to keep headlights shining in my eyes from cars behind me. I also dim all of the interior lights. I do these things to put less strain on my eyes.

Speaking about broken leaf springs. What about the springs on your truck (if it has them)?
I had a truck many that I used to pull many trailers with. My springs become compressed and were very close to breaking. A retired mechanic noticed a sag on my my truck and advised to have them checked. Sure enough, they were close to the breaking point. An immediate replacement (at 90K miles) took place. My truck pulled like a new one after that.
    Another great video.
    Safe travels.
    Take care.

Luckily we were stopping for the night at a harvest host location in a very small town in Arizona. Thank God for small towns in America !! A young man familiar with RVs came to our rescue, crawled underneath our trailer and took a picture of the part we needed. He referred us to a local truck repair, the people were amazing and got 2 leaf springs and replaced them both the next morning and we were on the road within 3 hours. I’m so glad we were nowhere near an RV dealer. I’m sure it would have taken forever and cost twice as much !

We learned to think outside the RV box when our Motorhome had a tire blowout. We called a tire repair place, the gave us the name of a truck repair place. Man it was fast. They were at the RV on the side of the road and replace within an hour. We knew the tires were getting old, and the had more in stock so we followed the repair person to the shop to get the rest replaced and back on the road safely. Of course that took a while. But safety first! We also know that hangry is a real thing. When we have a problem, the first thing I think about is how long has it been since we've eaten? If it's been a while, we discuss how to fix our issue over a meal. That way we have a plan and a full stomach before we start to tackle the issue.

Just my 2 pennies.

My husband handles all the mechanical aspects of the rv. I will point out things when I don't think they look right. As for the leaf springs, I think I'm going check them out myself periodically. It's suggested to clean them, and dry them....I will do this to see there condition since hubby has back issues. We so understand the crazy roads, railroad track, and bridges with bumps, holes, and terrible roads. NY, TX, OK, and VA are some areas with terrible roads. We never travel over 65MPH, the rig is just to darn big to do so. Plus if people don't like how fast (AKA: Slow) were driving they can pass us😜
Great start on your new inititive for volunteering!!! The parks all need firelanes cleared, and help. Staffing is minimal in parks. So your volunteering is awesome, thank you all for doing this.

Thanks for another great video! We've learned a lot from your experiences and have taken them to heart.
As for how long we drive during a day: I do all the driving so we drive until I feel like stopping or Dottie MUST stop (if you get what I mean - something I learned real fast after we were married). Usually, we do our annual trips to the northern New Mexico mountains in one day (595 miles or about 10 - 11 hours). With our old 2017 Silverado 1500 LTZ, we arrived somewhat fatigued. Our new 2022 Silverado 2500HD has changed all of that. Towing our trailer is now a breeze and the 36-gallon fuel tank means we can get there with 3 fuel stops instead of 5. We arrive relaxed and with enough light to see what we're doing to get set up. Otherwise, our maximum travel day is about 350 to 450 miles. We try to stop before 5:00 pm to set up, eat supper, get fueled for the next day, and relax. For us, the journey is as important as the destination, something that I have always enjoyed and, for the last 45 years, with my sweet bride who enjoys it as much as I do. We're always looking forward to our next adventure.
Safe travels to you and yours. Watch those rough roads, y'all! We know your springs will thank you. 😉

You're so right - everyone can do what's right for them in terms of travel days. Ours vary. But I have to say, some of my fondest memories are from stumbling upon the 'in-between places' - the little towns you would never plan on visiting, but you stop over at because they have a harvest host and then you discover they are fascinating. Or a pretty canyon you use to break a journey at and stretch your legs. I love this about RVing - you visit ALONG the way, not just at the destination. Some of the in-between places have become our favorite places and now THE destination for repeat trips! BUT, I totally hear you too - we like to put our foot down and make progress toward our destination too. Plus the car is the only time our kiddo is chill! so we enjoy the driving!!

Seeing the picture of the spring it is clear that,( if you look at the top center you will see a odd looking spot) this probably was from the place that made the springs a bad spot and was so that the installer at the rv assembly station did not notice,

Cory, a quick observation of the break of the spring. It looks like the steel had a flaw in it's material. As well, it looked like the spring had fractured and then broke. Part of the break seems to be "hammered" smooth. That would have been from movement prior to the final failure. Also, your comment about slowing down at the appearance of an unlevel bridge is spot on. Considers the difference in the way a vehicle reacts when you "crawl" over a sudden elevation change vs when you are at speed. Would you rather be hit in the arm by a slow punch or a fast one?

Great question about travel style & pace. I currently have a 14 foot TT, towed by SUV, for 2 years now. My travel style & pace is solely dependent on where I’m going & the reasons. In the beginning i ( former we) were traveling every 1-2 weeks. On the actual driving days we would break up the hours each day. But, as you know, sometimes things unexpectedly happen. Typically, the plan was get to the next destination as quickly & SAFELY as our bodies could endure. Now that I’m solo, it’s taking me a lil longer, to plan , navigate, decide alone just takes more time. To load & unload & setup, takes about a full day , so I like to stay longer when I arrive. I’ve stayed at a RV park for 6 months, wasn’t planning on staying that long, but I got sick & when I recovered it, their salt water swimming pool opened. It was tooooo relaxing and perfect for my recovery. When it closed, I left and headed west to Utah, stayed with friends on their 2 acres for about 6 weeks. It’s always changing for me, but that’s also what I love. You get to choose & change it up when you want or need to.

I used to like traveling at night but since I've gotten older (mid 60s) I don't care for driving at night much because of vision issues (headlights look like a star). My next trip is 1800 miles one way with some diversions along the way and I will be doing it with a dog so there will be many stops along the way and I won't be doing any 8+ hour driving days but it's fine since there are plenty of places to camp between Puyallup Wa. and Boca Chica Tx. I think if I had broken leaf springs I would check into some bump stops to add to the trailer, if nothing else it can reduce the amount of drop should a leaf spring break again but it should reduce over extending the leaf to nil. I love that spider near the end, I would be tempted to make a pet of it unless it's rare of course.

Howdy, so according to my engineer husband who took metallurgy, based on your image of your cross section of your leaf spring looks like it was a bunch of micro fractures over time with a final snap (the c shaped patterns at the top are the final break/sheer-which what was left holding it together). It also looked like the metal might have been a poor quality. He said that they are designed to take 10 times rated load for potentially an unlimited life. Compounded with bad batch of metal form and micro fractures, led to your spring breaking. Ps we love watching your videos. We just bought a 2017 16 foot Bambi Airstream for us to enjoy with our 8th grader and our Corgi. We go on our first trip with it in Cali end of March. Thank you for sharing your family adventures!!!!

When you get older you won't like long travel days. We try to limit it to about 6 hours. Part of that is back problems on my part. I can do most work on the RV but would not tackle suspension - because of back problems.

We typically travel 12-14 hours on travel days to get where we’re going. We would rather spend time at the destination too, so one big day of travel is worth it to us. Plus my husband is a truck driver for a living, so when we get time to get away it’s usually only a week to a week and a half at most. Since he’s used to being on the road anyway, it’s not a big deal to him to drive long hours. 😊

If I want to spend more time somewhere, I simply stay longer. Getting there fast doesn't have anything to do with how long I stay. It's all in the planning. I always add extra days in my travel plan, available between hard dates with reservations, in case I want to stay longer somewhere, or I need to make a repair. So I'm not sure why you'd have to drive 6+hrs to spend more time somewhere. However, I will drive 6+hrs to beat the weather when there's a bad upcoming forecast, such as wind. I just drove 500mi one day last week to beat the wind forecast in Texas. I always want to avoid bad weather, that's worth driving a long travel day. But it's rare I need to do that.

All things a fixable and you can always find a solution to a problem. Like yall said, always always ALWAYS do a "pre trip" check when you stop, cause you'll never know. This video is spot on, you guys did a very good job explaining. Keep calm, think through a solution and get it done :)
Also, things are bound to break and wear down, these guys are full time and doing thousands and THOUSANDS of miles a year. It's apart of the travel. Just keep yourself informed and double triple double check! Happy and safe travels everyone!

Cory, food for thought. Your truck probably has a 6K rated rear axle just like your trailer. So why are you not breaking those springs too? They travel over the same bad roads as your trailer.

When I cross a transition to a bridge on the highway, I usually put my right tire in the center of the lane so that I am following a path on the pavement that isn’t mashed down by the traffic. I find the transition onto a bridge a little less harsh here. Of course this depends on the traffic around me.
