What The Hell Happened To Tenchu?

  • The Tenchu series' heavy stealth focus, demanding resource management, beautiful yet somewhat gloomy graphics, and authentic japanese soundtrack all came together to form an excellent experience that few games could compare to for the rest of that console generation, and would even go on to score a spot as Game Informer's "54th best game of all time".
We would probably put it a bit higher than that, but even still. So with all that said, about the ground breaking nature of this series, why haven't we seen another one in almost ten years?

The Tenchu series is actually a gaming milestone. This game laid down the blue print for stealth mechanics and perfected it at once. Stealth hasnt gotten any better really. Tenchu had bait, traps, sound discipline, visual discipline, enemies noticed dead bodies, and cautionary modes. All stealth games use this. Tenchu is indeed in the truest form a game of innovation and perfection at what it did. No other games have gotten further since in the stealth department. With all the stealth games out these days this game deserves an immaculate return.

but I would like a Tench 1, 2 and 3 be like how the Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy and Spyro Reignited Trilogy or Tomb Raider Anniversary did it.,
it just need that kind of huge "HD/rebuild" make over, so that can work.
It just need to be faithful to the original games levels, gameplay and story, with a modern graphical overhaul.
Then add in abit of the gameplay of Shadow Assassins and other modern gameplay ideas.

Activision's only request was to give the players more indications on the mechanics at the start of the game, that's why you have a short tutorial at the beggining. That's the only way in wich they decided something in the creative process. Everything else was Miyazaki and his team.
Do you really think that Activision requesting whatever they wanted to developers would result in a game with no DLC, no microtransaction, and way too hard to pick up for any casual gamer ? Like cmon.

Tenchu is one series that truly deserves a properly realized comeback. The first game was one of the games that changed my gaming life back in 1998, though it admittedly hasn't aged well at all. Noriyuki Asakura's soundtrack to that game is one of the most amazing pieces of music ever put into gaming. I honestly believe whichever developer currently holds the right to the Tenchu series, should collab with ubisoft. I'm a huge Splinter Cell fan, and I feel that series is the only stealth games that have a lot in common with the Tenchu games. Imagine a properly developed Triple A Tenchu title. My gaming wishes would be answered for once.

I still own the first Tenchu game, and Fatal Shadows. The controls need serious revamping. I also kind of regret selling Tenchu Z on the 360 years ago. It was a decent and admittedly fun, though overly repetitive game. Arrrgh, I just miss Tenchu as a series. There's very good reasons why the series is dormant, but i still miss it. The thing they keep forgetting is that we liked the fact that the Ninjas moved like real people. You felt like you could do it too.

Personally I loved, AND STILL DO love, Tenchu Z. It ran so smoothly, and I've put probably 100s of hours into it. It does have repeating maps, but it doesn't really feel that repetitive, since everything's different on each map. It's one of those games you can play 1000 different ways and still have fun.
Shadows Die Twice looks really nice. I've been wanting From Software to bring us some more Tenchu. My main concern is that the game seems a bit too "Soulsy". I was hoping for a straight up Samurai/Ninja game with pure realism (or very close to it), and a focus on Stealth/Swordplay as well as crafting of swords
(like Way of the Samurai 3, mixed with Tenchu Z stealth). Not sure I like the whole Ninja/Samurai vs Demons thing. Still it DOES look very fun, I'm a huge fan of Souls.

Howls Castle Nah,altough it has a grappling hook,it was not same as tenchu (watch the gameplay and you know what i mean). And the battle style are same like those Souls franchise or Bloodborne. They just adding "the jump and kill" similar to Uncharted 4.

    • @DeadmanToto
      @DeadmanToto Před 5 lety +3

Really? I think its pretty obviously Tenchu animations. Especially in the stealth kills. One of the kills from the initial Sekirou trailer is almost the EXACT same stealth kill animation from Tenchu Z. The battle system is clearly taken from the SoulsBorne series', but the stealth and sneaking animations scream Tenchu to me.

Completely fucking wrong lol has nothing to do with tenchu since its souls like gameplay and almost always forces you into combat and the stealth is laughably bad because of the dumb AI also "interesting story" really? The story was boring as hell and very forgettable plus the characters were very forgettable even the main character who has zero personality and zero character traits is highly forgettable.

Didn't the original developers make the Shinobido games? They were somewhat of a spirital sucessor to the first two games. They never felt as cool as Tenchu though.

yeah, Shinobido is the spiritual successor of the Tenchu saga, and it was made by Acquire the original creators of Tenchu.
It was a good game, fun to play, but the missions were very repetitive. Anyway, it was a lot better game than all the Tenchu games after "Wrath of heaven"

    • @CraigJudd

Shinobido on PS2 is hands-down the game that made me feel like a ninja. Not only could you take missions from whoever you wanted, you could use the mission system itself to screw over your adversaries. You'd usually get a mission request from Team A wanting you to protect a delivery, and a request from Team B asking you to steal the same delivery. If you were on Team A's side, it was actually easier to accept Team B's "steal" mission and voluntarily fail it.
But my favourite example of thinking like a ninja was when I was working to topple the Young Lord. My patron sent me a request to assassinate him, but the Young Lord also sent me a mission - he said he'd send his guards away and face me in his castle in honourable one-on-one combat. I accepted, and turned up at his castle to find it completely devoid of guards, as promised. I climbed up the outside of his castle, and located the Lord on the top floor waiting for me. I threw a shuriken into the windowsill, and when he cautiously crept over to investigate I reached in, pulled him outside, and pinned him to the side of his castle with my sword.

It's because ninja theme games have gone downhill since their golden age in the 2000s. There hasn't been a good Ninja Gaiden, Shinobi or Tenchu game in a long time, and none of the games they inspired like Ninja Blade, Shinobido and Red Ninja really caught on.
Only good Ninja games in the 2010s been Mark of the Ninja, and maybe The Messenger that's coming out in a few days, since it looks like a good NES era Ninja Gaiden inspired game.

I feel like Shinobido did enough though to innovate in the genre to definitely improve what it meant to be a good stealth/action game. It improved in a lot of ways over Tenchu. Including AI, that changed it's behavior depending on previous missions you had accomplished, being able to choose what mission you'd like to do without advancing the story. A base defense minigame which is a whole other game all on its own, being able to keep out those barbarians was a nightmare.
Shinobido lacked the character that Tenchu had, Rikimaru and Ayame the amicability and professional relationship between the two as well as the exaggerated characters of their adversaries. Overall, I agree with your comment though. I just feel like it's disappointing Shinobido never caught on because it did a tonne of things right, if anything it nailed the series it was trying to imitate.
