It REALLY did! It was such an exciting time to watch MTV videos. Younger generations today don't seem to get that. Imagine if you had never seen your favorite bands outside of playing a few TV performances like on Top of the Pops or American Bandstand, and then VOILA! MTV appears - 24 HOURS A DAY of your favorite bands, not just replaying concert footage, but actually ACTING out the storylines in their songs! It was monumental for the time. I was a preteen living in the Midwest, so this was the most amazing thing I had ever seen at the time. Even more amazing is how now in 2021 we can rewatch the original videos anytime we want and interact with other fans and the band in real time chat! I really think the younger generations take this for granted. When I was a kid and a teen, we had to literally write REAL letters to the band and mail it to the band fan club! We were lucky to get a response, and if we did, we usually got an autographed poster and other collectibles.

@@tylergirl1970 , lot's of ghost notes, about every other note. It's fast, difficult because it's repetitive, but it's not too hard, as most of it is in power chord shapes. It's one of my favorite bass lines to play. Hold Back the Rain is very similar and from that same period, and Late Bar is as well. John's writing style and playing style at that time ( for faster songs ) was to fill a song up, lots of percussive things going on. He became more of a pocket player after Seven and the Ragged Tiger LP. I'm a huge John Taylor and DD fan, love playing about everything they did on guitar, bass, and synths. Wish I could sing though. lol

The guy caught up in the net is the drummer Roger Taylor. The guy lounging in the cabin as the girls creeps by is the other Co founding father of the band; the keyboardist Nick Rhodes, and of course the blonde singing lead is Simon LeBon. Im into sailing so I always loved this video. This boat is a vintage beauty. Its a "Ketch" style yacht named Eilean that was built in 1936. The boat was sailed under many different owners over the next 5 decades. In 2006, Italian watchmaker Panera saw her in an English channel in a sad state of disrepair. Instantly recognizing her from Duran Duran videos Panera bought her and arranged for her to be completely restored. She was re-launched in 2009 as part of an advertising campaign for Panera. In 2012, some original members of Duran Duran were present when Eilean was featured in the classic yacht regatta in Antigua. They wept as she sailed across the finish line in all her original glory.

Duran Duran was one of the great MTV bands. Their success went hand-in-hand with the channel's for that first decade. They made great videos to great 80's synth-pop music, and MTV had great success playing them. There were quite a few artists in the 80's who owed their success to their exposure on MTV, and yeah, there definitely was an art to the videos. A particular style that was hard to pin down but had to do with movement, clever or intense use of colors, oddball characters, precise visual rhythms, and bizarre storylines. If you're into the 80's video thing, try
"She Blinded Me With Science" czcams.com/video/V83JR2IoI8k/video.html

Each of those videos are classics of the genre. (I know you've already seen "Hot for Teacher", another brilliant example of 80's over-the-top goofiness.) It was so much fun to witness all that crazed enthusiasm for a new art form! :D

Hi Jayvee, longtime American Duranie fan here since 1982. So awesome to see you appreciating this song! Not bad for self-taught British boys, eh? Rio is a fun song to listen to and dance to, and yes this video CATAPULTED Duran Duran and MTV onto the world scene (along with Hungry Like the Wolf, filmed in Sri Lanka). This video was filmed at the very beginnings of MTV. The videos at that time were all experimental - anything goes! It was a new art form. DD videos in particular were very BIG screen cinematic quality. They were intended to be mini music movies.
I was a preteen at the time when I first saw the Rio video. I had already seen the videos for Hungry Like the Wolf and Planet Earth before this one. In the early 80s, music fans had never seen bands do anything like this before, on television. It was very exciting to watch new MTV videos. I found Duran Duran altogether to be intriguing, exotic and creative. I was hooked on their music from the first time I heard them, and I am always interested in hearing any new songs they come up with. Good job on this review! You were spot on about John Taylor's bass playing, Roger Taylor's drumming and the sax. But also remember Duran Duran's distinct unique sound is very much also due to Nick Rhodes synth keyboard.
