He said Vedder sang on that album because he was a big fan. Pearl Jam wasn't famous yet and Graffin ran into Vedder and asked him if he wanted to sing some backing vocals and a feature for the album. As I have gotten older, I have gone from someone with very closed off views of religion, to someone who realizes that it is not all corrupt, and although the structure doesn't work for me, it does bring comfort and strength to those who feel differently. I was raised with faith in Jesus Christ and discovered punk and all heavy music around 6th grade which was in the mid 80s for me. Talk about a conflicted soul! I never took this song as anything other than standing against the idea that Jesus Christ somehow loves the United States more than anyone else. Also, it seems to be making a statement about Christian nationalism which I am completely against. I want government out of my faith and I sure as heck don't want a theocracy in government. That never ends well. We don't have to believe what each other does, but if we all at least respect each other's right to their own beliefs, this world can be at least 50% better than it is. 👍

Great video, y'all. As an Atheist, it's awesome to see Christians actually listen to a song like this and not dismiss it based on the band's and/or song's name, and then actually think about it's meaning. This is the first video of your's I've watched, and I enjoyed how in depth you went, relating the lyrics to events taking place at the time the song was written. You even recognized a few things the song expressed that I thought you might miss, like the dangers of politics and dogmatic religion intertwining. I hope you take the time to listen to more Bad Religion tunes if you haven't already. I think you would really enjoy, understand, and consider their commentary on Religious, Political, Social, and Personal issues.

I'm 50 and was raised with faith in God and Jesus Christ. I also discovered heavy music around the age of 12. 🤣🤣
I take or leave bad religions music for obvious reason. I love the fast aggressive sound of their earlier albums, say Suffer and and prior. Great stuff to skate to! Obviously I don't agree with everything they say but a lot of the social and political commentary is spot on. Even this song, never once did I take this as a slam against Christianity on a whole, but the idea that somehow Jesus Christ loves the United States more, or that he's a uniquely American idea. Also making comment against Christian nationalism, which I'm totally against. I like the government out of my faith and I like keeping faith out of government. Those two mix about as well as oil and water.

The video maker left out some of the lyrics -
I don't need to be a global citizen,
    'Cuz I'm blessed by nationality.
I'm member of a growing populace,
    We enforce our popularity.
There are things that seem to pull us under and,
There are things that drag us down.
But there's a power and a vital presence,
    That's lurking all around.
    We've got the American Jesus,
    See him on the interstate.
    We've got the American Jesus,
He helped build the President's estate.
I feel sorry for the Earth's population,
'Cuz so few live in the U.S.A.
At least the foreigners can copy our morality,
They can visit but they cannot stay.
Only precious few can garner our prosperity,
It makes us walk with renewed confidence.
We got a place to go when we die,
And the architect resides right here.
    We've got the American Jesus,
    Bolstering national faith.
    We've got the American Jesus,
    Overwhelming millions every day.
    He's the farmer's barren fields,
    (In God)
    The force the army wields,
    (We trust)
Expressions on the faces of the starving millions,
    (Because He's one of us)
    The power of the man,
    (Break down)
He's the fuel that drives the Klan,
    (Cave in)
He's the motive and the conscience of the murderer,
    (We can redeem your sins)
    He's the preacher on T.V.,
    (Strong heart)
    The false sincerity,
    (Clear mind)
The form letter that's written by the big computers,
    (And infinitely kind)
    The nuclear bombs,
    (You lose)
    The kids with no moms,
    (We win)
And I'm fearful that he's inside me...
    (He is our champion)
    We've got the American Jesus
    See him on the interstate
    We've got the American Jesus
    Exercising his authority
    We've got the American Jesus
    Bolstering national faith
    We've got the American Jesus
    Overwhelming millions every day
    One nation, under God...

AND really understood and payed attention to the lyrics I'm subscribing. There are SO many punk bands out there with such important messages in their lyrics but the vast majority of people just brush them off and don't even give them a chance because "Oh, punk rock, 3 chords and anarchy, that's all it is" and they don't see that the usually simplistic instrumentals are meant to not overshadow what they are trying to say. Mad props to you guys for recognizing what the song is criticizing and engaging with that in a good faith discussion, instead of oversimplifying and misunderstanding its message. This is really cool to watch and your open-mindedness is a true virtue. You're doing a great job practicing the kinds of humble qualities that I understand Christians are *supposed* to try to cultivate in themselves. Amen, more people need to quit letting themselves get so triggered by challenges to practices and ways of thinking that turn up in their communities! Bad Religion is my favorite band and it's awesome to see their message being heard for what it truly is. The critics Dr. Graffin drops in this songs are pure truth, and you can underline it with red when you've seen amerincan missionaries working in your country.

I'll help you out here Edwin with your good comment... You mean "critiques" not critics there.

I like how their jaws dropped when they read the lyrics.

    Excellent vid!
I found this randomly as a BR fan. Coming from a Christian upbringing, it makes me smile to see y'all approach this intelligently.
They dont hate religion or christianity.
They, like many punk bands, point out the flaws of belief without question.

Dean h He actually does understand the sarcasm/cynicism , she doesn’t always. He gets the song pretty much to it’s fullest extent.
Ironically, her reaction to using the word “nigger” as opposed to his was fun to watch. xD
Fun fact: DK’s longtime drummer is African-American himself, which makes her reaction even more funny.
Could see her brain going “you can’t use that word!” Yes. Yes, you can.

Dean h Only the first part of my response was aimed at you. The rest was just me saying stuff. Sorry for the confusion. :)

By the look on her face while the song was playing, I didn’t expect her to say she liked it at all. Major props for being open minded. I’m glad you guys enjoyed it. Bad Religion is one of my all time fav bands.
