I had six of them over the years. VW beetles have personalities of their own. They have so many lives, they don't die, they just "hibanate". They are so trustworthy and loyal to their owners. If I found a good one, I would probably give it a shot. They are one of the best cars ever made.
I was sitting there just waiting for the guy to come running out of his house yelling, "HEY! THAT'S NOT THE VW I WAS TALKING ABOUT! IT'S THE ONE IN THE BUILDING BEHIND THIS ONE WITH NO MOTOR OR TIRES!"

A tip on using your air tank, you can connect it to a fully inflated tire on your tow rig or trailer and “borrow” some air to fill your tank. It’ll work as long as the donor tire has more psi than the tank.
Since I was a young kid of 8- 13 I've loved HERBIE THE LOVE BUG , and therefore loved vw bugs never owned one but one day I hope so for my son when he gets older he can have the excitement and awe of a vw beetle

My first car was a 1973 1300s UK registration number SEA 426L. So we named her seal as she was light blue and I was thrilled to find some photos of her online a couple of years ago, still running. ♥️

My Dad had the 67' last year with the front and back separated bar bumpers. He bought off his boss for $200.oo.
He drove it for about a year and a half, and someone stole it from in front of our house!
I had a 1970 and believe me the hell I put it through was not something I'm proud of , but it was my first vehicle! The memories where priceless, I even found they float just to say , fix it and you may know what a mini tank you have ,and someone can create some memories with a fun machine they are .and again you guys are a blast & priceless, so God bless you and thank for reminding of a good part of my past.
Just found your channel while on lockdown. We had a breakers yard in Ireland in the early sixties and broke lots of these for spares. We had a local guy who imported boat loads of mint Beetles from Germany and we supplied the parts to convert them from left to right hand drive. He also bought the registration plates and log books to put on them which was perfectly legal back then. We closed in 1966 when my dad passed suddenly and your dad reminds me much of him. The strong silent type of old fashioned mechanic. Stay safe .

One of the reasons why they are not as popular as they used to be is the safety issues like airbags and a host of others safety items that cars nowadays have that the VW doesn't have. I hope she changes her mind by the time she is old enough and ready to get her first car. God bless her.

Seeing this old Vdub emerge into the light under its own power gave me great joy. I saw the episode about the Opel GT last night and it makes me think about my mom's Opel, it's been in the family for decades, and it hasn't moved since about 2003 or so. I should probably go get it.
Volkswagen Beetle, a car designed by Ferdinand Porsche, the word simplicity taken to the utmost, but a feat of engineering. A car 100% reliable, in a few words MADE IN GERMANY, that says all. Thank you for a great video.

@@kingwreckersgarage9371 I guess I don't know the right people. Then again, these days everyone I knew has died out. Odd thing though, as small as they are, I can still be comfortable in them. That don't happen with many cars these days, not even so called larger cars. I loved my squareback, until the damn mechanical fuel injection screwed up. Hell to fix. So even after I nearly burned up the car, I still got more than I paid for it. At 15 years old never having seen a metric wrench, I was able to get a VW van running. Didn't stay running long, but I got it going after setting for years, with absolutely no specific VW knowledge at all. Had I known then how easy they would be to rebuild, I would have done that, but I knew nothing so I didn't. I had a chance to buy a nice bus, bukt the wife nixed it cuz it didn't have namby pamby power steering.
@@tootall5559 just got my 71 square running again today. mild cam'd 1776cc, heads and 40mm DCNF Webbers. nose to tail she's mechanically good, electrically there is work to do, it's ugly as sin, and a NW car but she's street legal and tagged. Had a 68 square in high school. Best SPG I've ever had, and best driving air cooled model VW ever made. hopefully you will find a VW the warden will allow some day.

@@jxckson_s I have ran up on a beetle and a van that had automatics. Not the best thing in such a vehicle, but they did have them.
This was one of your best videos... to see the condition of that bug and to see it turn over, then the spark and the first cold start. Then the grand finale! The drive home was awesome!!!! Oh! And getting air in the last tire...👍🏾
Ha ha - I had two 1969 white Beetles in the 1970's. The paint on both was horrible - VW used a "new" formulation that was supposed to prevent corrosion, but it caused premature corrosion. This car actually looks to be in decent condition based on my memory of my two examples from 40+ years ago. Two big giveaways on the year are steering wheel (chrome horn ring), and taillights. The rotted off running boards stuffed inside is classic. The battery tray on one of mine rotted through while I was driving, and the battery dragged on the road, shorting out the posts on the body. My dad used his plumbing supplies in his truck and torch to fashion something to get me home. Great memories!

One thing is for sure, vintage Volkswagen Beetles are special cars in their own special way. She’s a beaut’ for being. Free car!!!
I bought a 1060 VW in ....oh 1975. Rebuilt the engine, new clutch, valves ( and would spend a cpla hours once a month to adjust valves...) had a lever on the floor to twist and get reserve gas.(about 35 miles) . I drove that car from Srasota Fl....for about 6 months...loved it. Had a rubber gasket aroune engine compartment so no water or steam came into the compartment, so NEVER stalled from running thru water. I had driven through 2 ft deep water. Also put a tuned muffler on it.... Then I went to Phx AZ, stayed in Sante Fe for about 4 months, drove around Phx as I went to college for 3 years, then drove back to Sarasota.... Then a pickup truck demolished the car and me . I put easy 100,000 miles on it, only changed oil every 5000 miles or so, adjusted valves monthly, tuned every 2 or 3 months, replaced brakes ..oh about 40-45,000 miles, put a killer stereo in ...(no a/c yet even tho I lived in Phx (HOT) and Fl (hot) never missed the A/C . The heater worked great..I spent a winter in the mountains around Sante Fe and damn it got cold. 35 HP ..Top speed about 64 mph. Once, I got right on a semi's ass...I mean 10 ft back. Got to (buried the speedo) I guess 72-73 mph ....lol My girlfriends brother called it the tin can . It had that oil bath air cleaner, little tiny tail lights...I spent a LOT of time riding around the desert outside of Phx... She never let me down....but...man no power!!!!lol You have a 40 HP there.

To open that garage door ... all you needed to do was pull the door back to almost closed and then push the bottom of the door out about a foot and a half ... and then open it. Those barn door hangers have a lot of swing on them.

I am in the market for a good one, I had three , a 68, a 71 super, and a 77. Miss them all. So easy to work on mechanically. Remember, every time a Beetle is saved from the scrap yard, an Angel gets it's wings.

This 1968 Volkswagen Beetle is a true time capsule. One item of interest is, has integrated gas gauge in speedo and also a separate gas gauge to right of cluster. Gas gauge to right of speedo was on US VW Beetles from 1962 to 1967. Prior years had a lever ahead of shifter to turn when ran out of gas. Had a reserve of 1 gallon of fuel to hopefully get you to filling station. This must have been an early model 1968 VW Beetle. Have not seen this before. Looks to be a strong relic of the past. Enjoy the process of resurrecting & making this VW Beetle road worthy again ... Slainte' ! Cheers !
"Lets reseat this old tire with lighter fluid!!" BOOM! It worked! Folks don't try this at home. I worked on VW"s for 20 yrs, now retired. Those old vee dubs were so reliable because they were SIMPLE. Easy to work on, and overbuilt. Yes the heater, wipers, and electrical sucked, and they were grossly under powered, but they always ran, and they were GREAT in the snow! I've owned several. Brought back lots of memories. Love these guys. GREAT videos.

I use to no a man that took one of those Volkswagens and put a 350 Chevrolet engine in one. He would Polk long down the highway and when you tried to pass him he would mash down on it and runoff and leave you.

I wasn't as daring when I got my 1972 Super Beetle barn find, especially not with 4 flat tires. So I didn't try to start her up. We dug the car out of 10 inches of mud, shoe-horned it past an 8-foot drop-off, somehow got it across a tree stump, and then trailered it home. The rear window was missing, and I watched acorns and leaves flying out of the car during the entire 25-mile trip.
THAT Bug is in very good shape. Everybody owned a Bug at one time! 👍
That is a great find! Check list for your truck/trailer: gloves, dust mask, tools, air hose, Full air tank and fuel can, battery and wire, jack and 4 way lug wrench, bucket and maybe some canned air to clean out stuff. If you have a generator on the trailer small shop vac ot a gas powered leaf blower for cleaning out stuff like that engine compartment. Pretty sure you can fit all of that in the bucket and bed of truck. Over all you did real good there

Done that a few times myself. VW's are so cool and so reliable. Last one I got running in 10 minutes and the all original 74 Porsche 914 with the original fuel injection setup was started before I got it off the trailer and that took me about 1 hour. Ran like a kitten after a few tweaks over the next week. So sweet. You got a great deal. Fun to start these old beasties.

When I was trying to learn to speak Persian Farsi when I was going through the Q-course to become a Green Beret for the Army, People gave me the hardest time because I said, "Is that any count".... Most people have no idea what that means..... but if you hear a man talk like that... you can TRUST HIM..... Needless to say I barely made it through the school being that I'm from East Tennessee and We are still trying to learn English around here.... HAHA

Justin Smith yeah me to. Had a buddy in high school that had 1. We could put $10.00 in gas and go for a week. And gas was .99 cents a gallon. And we had Ethyl.
Monte Wow you just brought back memories!! Gas was about $.95 when I started driving. My buddy and I would split up some money and put $10 in and drive forever in our Beetles.
I had a '74 Superbeetle that was a lot of fun. It would always stall when rolling to a stop sign, so I had to leave the clutch in as long as possible, but when it snowed, the engine braking would start the wheels locking up, so I would pump the brakes with my left foot, gas with the right, and scrape the frost from inside of the windshield with a tape cassette case with my left hand, and shift with the right hand. Steering was a luxury. The good old days. I do like the big sunroof, though.

Wow, what an unbelievable find. I owned 2 VW bugs and found them to be great. I'm glad to got a "free car" that you were able to drive back to the shop.
Brings back found memory's, I started, at the Bug Hut in Orem Utah, Duane Foresight taught me all I no. I was drafted and was taught in the military how to repair aircraft, later I went on to work in Washington state as a aircraft mechanic for 45 years. Now retired, I still love to work on old cars. If you didn't know keep number 3 valve gap is a little on the lose side, it has a tendancey to run hotter.
"We got it running with 1 tool." That's the beauty of old German engineering.
Don't be too enamored, an aircooled VW is about as sophisticated as a Briggs and Stratton engine.

You are correct, and that really "sucks: ... Better to not live in a vacuum, but to utilize a shop vac when necessary ...
Or even a petrol powered leaf blower...
or 2 sheets of newspaper or thin cardboard rolled into tubes one inside the other with the back end of one closed off. Hand-Made air pump.
An editor would have shortened this LONG video considerably.
@@Greg042869 ....but then what would we do instead of spray-painting our toenails and letting them dry while we watch? :) We all see how much crap there was in the engine compartment, how slowly they're removing it (possibly needing a considerably bigger bucket) (Estimated Quantity/Rate of Removal = Time to Clear It) yet we don't think - well some folk don't - to Skip Forward to where they're no longer removing the debris? I believe the answer lies not in shop vacs or video editing but in the fact that Life moves more Slowly in the Deep South than anywhere else. I love that lit petrol tyre inflation trick - I could watch that all day.

Just found this channel and have already watched a few episodes and what amazes me the most is the amount of old cars within clise proximity to your workshop and the cars are so cheap! I'm in Australia and all these cars in their current state would be worth a small fortune! Great series and keep the good work 👍
I don’t get it. I am around a bunch of older cars and trucks and live in the south like them and they’re no where near as cheap. They are all well used and abused around me

I had a 1972 Beetle in 1993. I miss that cute little thing. Thanks for the upload. It really made me smile to see you get it started and drove it back.

I just finished one that's now on the road and turning heads. They make a great first project. Super-easy to work on and lots of parts available. Just check condition of floorpans and heater channels/sills before you buy as they are a real challenge to fix if rusted out like mine were:)

@@lukasgarage956 My advice is "Budget carefully". There are so many goodies and aftermarket upgrades out there it's easy to get carried away. Fortunately I have a local parts supplier who is fair with prices and as honest as they get. Also helps to join a club and you'll pick up lots of knowledge and contacts.
Akin of Fury They honestly are easy to work on and a fun car.
Beetles or Beatles you'll always know they'll give you decades of enjoyment as both have and stood the test of time!
I know it's a sin to be jealous but I'm jealous that is a prime example of a Volkswagen barn find probably one of the best I've seen you have sure been blessed that is a definite fact get them sideboards off that perfect seat

I understand the 68&69 are the best beatles ever built. They had the larger engine and the updated trans axle. to me the are the best cars ever built because if you take care of them they will run for ever and when there is a problem it is easy to fix. Love them.

Yup it's the second time watching the vw being brought back to life but it's not the first time I've reviewed your videos there's is a lot to learn from your passion to bring back these vehicles to working order then the problem comes when you might have to let go( down the road) and that's my problem , because you start with the idea of if did this or do that to enhance the old with the new . So thank you for you sharing with us your videos . To stand back and to say job well done now it's time to put it to test (cruising down the road with a friend) the spark to dream of one more !
