  • Union Pacific locomotives do not typically see this much green as it is abundant in North Georgia in Spring. In fact, some areas are so overgrown that they resemble a jungle. Spring saw surprisingly many UP locomotives on CSX trains on the Abbeville Subdivision - some of which are featured in this video. Among those were the military trains S838 and S871. The former carried explosives, and loads of the latter included a plethora of American tanks, from lightly armored personal carriers M113 over Bradley infantry vehicles to Abrams M1A2 heavy tanks and their recovery helpers. Naturally, in this video we chase this very interesting train for 25 track miles from Elberton, GA to Hull, GA.
    The regular manifest Q583 shown in the video had four UP units, two at the head end and two as mid-train distributed power. The train was lead by a good-looking EMD SD70ACe.
    A curiosity in the video is manifest Q606, which is not regularly running this line. Originating in New Orleans, LA and usually bound for Waycross, GA, this one went to Hamlet, NC.
    Eventually, Q580 is the only train in the video that appeared in its usual format, although even he had a special thing to offer - an ST70AH trailing.
    Enjoy!

    I'm a UP fan, so I really enjoyed the video. Especially the first train, because the lead locomotive is one of my favourite, the good old AC4460CW. Of course the others are nifty too. The military vehicles are very serious. It's great to see your stuff again, thanks for the update. :)

      Awesome! The rebuild really still looked very shiny. I also liked the AC60s. CSX had a couple of them and we would frequently get to see them here on this line. It's sad they're gone.

    Excellent videos as usual.
    The ammunition train likely contained small arms munitions. DOT Class 1.10 & 1.40, there are 6 classifications 1.1 thru 1.6 least to most dangerous. Class 1.1 - 1.4 are Products with no significant risk of creating a blast or hazard. This is the reason why no buffer cars are required and the DPU can be used.
    The heavy armor trains was equipment from 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division from Fort Bliss, TX returning from Korea where they had been deployed as the 9th standard Rotational Brigade ~ in support of 2 Infantry Division / Republic of Korea-US Combined Division.

    Interestingly enough, the engines on Q583-01 were on another Q606 earlier the month before that headed up to Rocky Mount, got sent over to Nashville on Q582, headed up to Cincinnati on Q576 (I missed that), came back down to Nashville on Q573 (saw the two head end engines on 5 train day after Memorial Day), and then on Q583 in the video.

    Seeing this video one would think that the CSX is short of locomotives, after having removed the entire equipment of SD60 (with the sub-models "M" and "I"), SD50 and almost all the C40-8 / W.

    Those trains (except military) are not Q anymore but M. 7030 is as delivered AC60/44AC w 16-FDL engine 4400hp, I don't know if UP designates them as C44ACM, M yes!

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  Před 2 lety +1

      Right, but when the trains were filmed they still had Q symbols, so I kept the old designation. UP has rebuilt AC60s into C44ACMs. Thanks, great you enjoyed the video!

    • @hadesdescent6664
      @hadesdescent6664 Před 2 lety

      @@mbmars01 okay 👍, about UP they had C60AC and C60/44AC (first were 7500-7579 6000hp, and the second 7300-7335+7010-7079>7336-7405 and back to 7010-7079 always with V16 FDL 4400hp engines (like SD9043) and they are upgraded (retained original cabs) along with many C44ACs to M. Ex 7500 series is 6900 class now and I think EVOLUTION engines!
      Anyway, I wanted to point out that there are UP AC6000/4400CWs from the mid '90s and 4400 HP of, now M, but also classic AC4400CW Ms now ,not to be confusing about it when writing a model designation 👍👍👍🙋🏻‍♂️🙋🏻‍♂️🙋🏻‍♂️🙂

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  Před 2 lety

      Actually, none of the AC60s ever had 6,000hp engines. They were promised by GE, but could never be successfully engineered. Eventually, these locomotives were later designated AC4460CW by GE, because they received a 4,400 hp engine, but were not to be confused with the AC4400CWs. UP has an own designation system, because many of their locomotives received special modifications not present in the "stock" variants. Therefore, for UP locos, I typically list both GE and UP designations. I'm not consistent in this, though; CSX and CN also have own systems, but in those cases I usually only use the more common GE designations. The designation schemes are often rather confusing, for which there are multiple historical reasons, but that's another story :)

    just a curious question or two maybe first when a train has multiple locomotives why is they are always positioned front to back also all locomotives I have seen have a 4 number display what do those number mean ?? is it a numerical way of defining the locomotives model or is it the just the rail company way of keeping track of the where a bouts of that locomotive

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  Před rokem

      Ideally, the nose of the first loco points forward and that of the last backward, because when they run back on the next train the crew doesn't need to wye the engines (usually, railroads prefer to run their lead locos short-hood forward). The road number of a loco doesn't have always four digits, but almost all modern engines have four. The road number basically just serves as an identifier.
