In a nutshell? Crossing the border by sailboat for you is the same as arriving by air or road, but (like everything to do with cruising) it takes a little longer checking your boat in and out.
We cleared out of Indonesia recently and filmed the whole process. So watch till the end and see exactly how clearance works from start to finish.

Travel through Indonesia many times and appreciate the thoroughness of the immigration and customs departments. Although it seems a bit much traveling from one office to the next this ensures that you are documented in these countries. The last thing you want is to have something happen and they're being no evidence of your location. Also this is a national security issue for Indonesia. Piracy, extremist and criminals are still operating throughout Southeast Asia.
Thank you for your upload and valuable information. As a ship's Writer during the 1960's I sailed all around the far east, Port Health, Immigration and Customs all came to me on the ship, seems I had an easy time of it.

Well done on a comprehensive and accurate check list. In terms of Indonesia there are a few traps that cruising folk might benefit from and are more focused on what not to do, rather than your video which is the correct way.
Whether to use an agent or not. The right agent, such as the one you used is both great value and will guide you through the process. We have had cases of folk doing themselves with mixed results.
This occurred in 2011 when a few sailors as part of a rally who refused to use an agent, saved a few dollars but us as the organisers found out later they had departed illegally. They weren't concerned too much and simply brushed it off. We sorted out the issues with the government over several months including taking photos and having an Indonesian official from the consulate visit the yachts berthed in Australia. Equally some used an unauthorised agent who simply pocketed the fees and never submitted any paperwork. Hopefully none of those that departed illegally wish to visit Indonesia again or they might get a rude shock at the airport.
Our next rally in 2015, the government simply appointed an official agent, that was mandatory and travelled the length and breadth of the country following yachts to ensure correct process was followed. All of this was in the days of the previous regime of requiring an Indonesian Cruising permit (CAIT) and Sponsor letters, with the latter being provided by the Minister who was personally responsible for any 'lost yachts'.
I would also comment on the detailed approach of the officials in the video. I suspect given the cameras were rolling, everything was 'perfect'. We have found this to be the case when we have organised official events. Equally when we have checked in and out of Indonesia solo, we never encountered such a degree of detail.
A note on drugs. In Australia many ships drugs are restricted and fall into categories such as schedule 4 & 8 (morphine etc). The is a requirement for the ship to maintain a register of such drugs and note any usage. Again the officials were extremely detailed on this point taking photos of the packages, noting batch numbers and quantities etc. Illegal drugs are a strict NO NO and I continue to be amazed about those that argue the point about how this drug or that drug is legal in their home country and should be allowed in the host country. It is wise to carry doctors letters of authorisation for prescription drugs including personal meds for crew.
Last but not least is the contentious issue of firearms. Some cruising folk carry them which is quite legal. The hassle to do so, however is another issue altogether.

Yes, regarding drugs like morphine and any prescription-only medication, you can buy ocean cruising emergency kits which include these. They come with a licence and are sealed until used. We will be purchasing one of these for the Pacific crossing.
You won't get fast anywhere if you don't respect other cultures (behaviour, dress etc) and people who say "it's legal in my country, so should be accepted here" need to have a look at themselves! 😆 Liz x

Very interesting. It is telling that they basically have you bent over a barrel and can make you do anything they want. If they say sing a song for them then you gotta sing a song for them.
I wonder what kind of documentation you have for your dinghy. Do Esper's documents cover her tender? Here in the US that is a little bit of a grey area with some States insisting it be seperately licensed and registered like any small boat, while the intent of US Coast Guard documentation being that the tender is an integral piece of the mother vessel.
Except I didn't sing a song, they were just having fun. We all were. The dinghy is just part of Esper's gear and is not considered a separate vessel.

It looks like we might get stuck here where we are for a week or more due to weather windows going out into the Atlantic and perhaps even waiting on unobtainium out of production for 35+ years marine hydraulic steering pump parts from somewhere in Canada.
At least there is good internet to be had.
Yepper, same experiences here getting into countries, especially with specialized equipment. Dress nice, be well groomed, be polite, answer all questions, get an agent, make sure your papers are in order, vaccination records, all software licenses are on the correct devices and updated, perhaps a Seaman's Book, make sure the boat is "clean" (be mindful, they may bring dogs), calibration stickers are up to date, keep money handy to grease the wheels.
Funnily enough, Ervan explained that by getting an agent to do everything for you the local officials miss out on meeting the visiting yachties. He said they like to practice their English.
@@followtheboat Ah, when its just me travelling (not for business) then sure, other wise it was easier and faster to have an agent.
FYI going into Brazil, customs was EXTREMELY concerned about me having 2 laptop computers. I explained (truthfully) that 1 was for business and the other 1 was personal. I politely inquired why this was an issue, and they expressed concern that I was going to sell 1 of the computers. I assured them that I was not selling either computer, and asked if I could have the agent's name, phone number and email as I would contact him on the way out so he could see that I still had both computers. This was not acceptable. I got off with a warning and was allowed to take both computers, but told not to do so again. Every place has their own quirks 😀

That was one of the efficient transactions I have ever seen on video... is it always like in Indonesia or did your handler give them a heads up that you were going to video... I have seen other cruisers try to video the event in other countries in that area without success

Ervan knew some of the officers, but was our driver rather than agent. We asked in each office if they were happy to be filmed for FTB and they all said yes. Question. Is it possible to check out of a country while leaving your boat behind and later check back in and continue sailing on?
Normally yes, Don. In Malaysia, for example, there is no limit on how long your boat can stay in the country but we can only stay for three months at a time. Look forward to that tour ✌️⛵
What? Off line for a couple of weeks... that's almost a thumbs down offense. Just kidding. This is by far the best explanation of the ins and outs of international travel. I've found (as an air traveler) a lot depends on the particular official officer. I was told by one official that I needed form XYZ filled out only to get back in line to be asked why I used XYZ form when it was QRS10 that was required. Patience is a required virtue for sure.

The dress advice is good. I've almost always dressed smartish when going through immigration. When I flew into Thailand one time with a goatee and long hair and old (still valid) passport the immigration guy was suspicious. Without the goatee and short hair and an old passport where I looked like a teen. It was a mess, I'm sure it was only the fact that my passport was biometric that they allowed me in! Biometric passports are awesome, I might be a bit scruffy at times but at least my fingerprints won't change!
Yes, it's something we learned a long time ago. Scruffy cruisers get short shrift, and we've seen them being held up or put to the back of the queue in Thailand. 👌 Liz

Singapore is very expensive and you have to use an agent to check in. When you check out of a country you have to have visited another one before coming back.

It's fun having a stamp, when I got the first one I went round the boat stamping everything! 😄
We had a printer but it took up valuable space, and we hardly used it. Now whenever we're in a marina the office prints out copies of everything we need. 🙂🤙 Liz x
The other problem with printers is that they're geo-specific, meaning that if you bought the printer in the UK you can't buy cartridges for it in Asia. This is clearly intentional! ✌️⛵ Jamie
Sailing followtheboat printers are a massive scam! The inkjet kind, are purely a way to hook you into the consumables gravy train. It’s often cheaper to buy a new printer instead of replacing the cartridges. Maybe donate the old one to the office that looks like it needs it most?
For Indo, the women aboard used Punjabi suits they had made in Panagan.....they where always received well....

Somewhere I have obtained Boat Stamp should have Boat Name, registration number, and your flag state. Not sure where I got that from, but yours has looks like the first two and then your S/V icon image? I was thinking flag state was your countries flag, was just worded backwards, but apparently that is wrong?
Also at last customs exit stop, they stated Vessel Dec (VD). What exactly is that, Boat Reg? Or something else. Do not see that specifically listed on your blog page. Apparently not boat declaration inspection, as he stated that prior.
Also you stated something about SSR in which they must have processed tons so failing to understand why expecting tonnage. But are you sure its SSR, seems that I read somewhere that Part 1 does have and so does require tonnage survey to be done (one of the stated reasons for keeping it if you already have one), so maybe they were just confusing the 2 UK types and/or have done more of those recently.
FYI: I have accumulated, swiped and compiled together a 9 step procedure awhile back with some details and lists of expected things, but I noticed yours has more explanation in the various types of dept / agencies plus lil more info on what each will be looking for. I might have to swipe some from you :P It would be nice if you could glance over my list to see what all info I have incorrectly, if you have a chance. But if not, no worries.
The customs form is a Declaration of Inspection. There is no definitive clearance list, with countries often having their own peculiar regulations (Cruising Permits spring to mind).
SSR is one of two ways to register your boat in the UK, the other being Part 1 - I think Jamie mentioned this?
There is no regulation for a ship's stamp, we've seen them with just the boat name or logo. It just helps to make you look more official, which they like over here! Cheers, Liz
Yea I have Cruising Permits already listed under my step 7 of paying any associated fees.
Edit: Also not to be nitpicky, after having read your awesome blog (really is very well done, comprehensive yet not overly long). But under the sub-heading of 'Checking your boat in' the very first one you have listed is Immigration ... which even states they are usually not interested in your boat. Kind of conflicting there :p Prolly should be moved up under sub-heading of 'Checking you and the crew in' along with its corresponding Passport / Visa sections.
How do you deal with entering countries with a kitty? Don’t a lot of them not allow you to bring animals?

Checked the dictionary, but it translates both the same, more or less.
3rd party is damage to other persons. Personal is damage to yourself or your own crew.

where and how did you meet your guide? he seemed to be detrimental to getting the whole process done easily. Without him you may have needed an agent or at the very least an overpriced taxi...
"Detrimental"?! No idea why you think that… Without him we would have hired a scooter and driven around ourselves, like we do in most places. Ervan made the day less of a hassle.

from the video it appeared that he knew where everything was already and was familiar with the process. It seemed like without him, driving around yourselves would have taken much longer or costs more... isnt $20 less than it would have cost to rent a scooter? and is finding someone that's as helpful very common, or not so much??
