FALCON vs WINTER SOLDIER: Why Sam Was the Right Choice (And Bucky Wasn't) | MARVEL Explained

- The Falcon and the Winter Soldier ends with Sam finally embracing the mantle of Captain America. But why did Steve choose Sam to use the shield, instead of Bucky? Should the movies have followed the template of the comics? Why isn't Bucky worthy of shield?

I like how Sam is able to talk people about their military PTSD therapeutically. Bucky is still traumatized by his memories as the Winter Soldier, so I guess it makes sense. And Bucky is his own thing, the White Wolf.
Why didn’t he help walker tho. Haha
Bucky is White Wolf in Wakanda. He’s flipped who the Winter Soldier was and rightfully owns it.
I like that the alternate name of this show is Black Falcon and White Wolf.
and he killed countless innocent.
@@aquaticambience40 ...episode #5 friend. He tried to empathize with him and talk him down. “U.S. Agent” wasn’t ready to listen. The #1 priority for healing ones mind, is the person in question being receptive to the truth.
Bucky and Steve discussed Steve's successor beforehand. He obviously never wanted to be the next Captain America and agreed with Steve's choice of Sam or he wouldn't have been upset with Sam giving away the shield in the beginning. He agrees that he and Steve hadn't thought the ramifications all the way through, but always believes in Sam as the right man for the job. Character counts.
Exactly, Bucky was all in for Sam to be Cap.
exactly ever since the first movie u can see that bucky never wanted what steve did, he never understood steve desperatly wanting to fight and all.
Love the fact that bucky and steve didn't realize they were handing the shield to a black man, they only realize that he was a good man and deserving of the shield.
For 2 guys that grew up in the 1930's that's strange and wonderful. Steve and Bucky are both great guys. Among the greatest of the greatest generation.
I suppose fighting alien races would probably put race into perspective

Absolutely! One of my favorite quotes is from “Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner”
When Dr. John Wade Prentice tells his Father the difference between them.
“But you think of yourself as a coIored man. I think of myself as a man.”
It is the way should all see one another, just people who all share this little blue ball floating around in infinite space and time.
Great observation! Keep seeing people 🤗
The other thing, not only had Steve made the initial choice to give Sam the shield, he had decades to ruminate on that choice as he lived a normal life with Peggy.
@ScreenCrush this is a very good point
@@LiaBluBootsiii for real

@@trentschnell7225 Yes. That's why I said he had decades to "ruminate" over the decision.
I’m just happy Anthony Mackie is getting the Recognition he deserves. This is big for the MCU in the upcoming years. Captain America is back
The biggest issue I have as a black man with Sam taking the mantle is, his identity as Falcon is now erased. Falcon is an original black hero much like Black Panther. But now he's just tokenized. A "black version" of a white character. Why not just let him be respected as The Falcon. That would've been much more powerful for me because, he isn't being passed a mantle, he building a new legacy. Mackie did a great job with the role of Falcon though.
@@TheFreshSoundsFlorida The fact that he still has his wings still makes falcon but with a bigger fish to fry and a bigger world to be a hero of.
@@califflourish6985 But he's referred to as Cap by name to the public not Falcon. My point is, they should've just referred to him as The Falcon his original name. Not something handed down to him.
@@TheFreshSoundsFlorida But he's also handing the falcon to someone else tho ?. If that wasn't the case then I get your point but the fact that he's transitioning to something else greater than just a side character is a huge step for him. He answers to Steve earlier but now that he's cap people will answer to him which is great in my own opinion.
@@califflourish6985 he doesn't need Cap's title to transition to something greater though. He could do that by just being Falcon. The fact that he has to change his name to be recognized as something greater is a problem for me. I'm not a fan of tokenization. If you are, that's totally fine, more power to you. I prefer my black heroes to just be original like Black Panther or Luke Cage.
And one thing is Bucky already have his own shit and ptsd to deal with, giving him the title of Captain America would just become a burden and pressure to him even more, this show is on his self-realization and self-approve journey because initially he has his doubt cuz he knows that Steve is the only person who gets him and understands what he went through, honestly in the end seeing him being happy with Sam’s family is just freaking great, good for him dude needs a break
and this coming from the Mad titan lmao
"Hey Sarah" 😂
As a black man, I would've preferred if Sam could've just been recognized as the Falcon, not another Cap. Being recognized as the Falcon would mean hes building something of his own. Setting himself apart.
@@TheFreshSoundsFlorida I like how you share an opinion with those that just don't want a black cap and felt the need to validate your opinion by starting "as a black guy"...🤣😂 as a black guy, I totally disagree with you and totally understand what they are doing here. I think most of US do....
not to mention being 'captain america' was never buckys dream...he never wanted to fight in the war and didnt understand complelty why steve wanted to
WOW, as a Black man, I have a lot of respect for you addressing this HEAD ON. As the grandson of a WWII vet who came home and was threatened to be lynched if he wore his uniform. Isiah Bradley's story is all too real to me. But his honorable service led to my father is a Vietnam Vet, my brother being a IRAQ war vet and two sons serving today on ACTIVE DUTY. Thank you.
It used to get me VERY angry when white people would say they were mad at Kaepernick because he was disrespecting _their_ ancestors who had fought for Kaps freedom. It would get me LIVID because those people didn't even know that they were performing racism by assuming that black people (including Africa Africans and African Americans) were not involved in the world wars.
So glad information is coming out now. Blessings 🙌
@Eric Griffin that story kinda breaks my heart (if I misinterpreted it as sad when it wasn't I'm sorry) I hope things are going well for you

From doing random cameos in Ant Man, to having his own show and movie coming soon. Great job Mackie!

I REALLY did not like Mackie when I had first seen him in She Hate Me waaaaayyyy back when. This is dissertation-level analysis, and I'm here for it! The best thing about Sam is that he doesn't have the serum, and he doesn't desire it. This makes him relatable to every non-enhanced citizen of the world, and proves to be an inspiration for them. When he says, "we can do better," he's living proof of that--a regular guy doing superheroic things. Not everyone can be a Steve, Thor, or a T'Challa, but everyone can be a Sam Wilson.
Well, everyone can be a Sam Wilson if they're decked out top-to-toe in Wakandan tech with a fleet of drones that more than compensate for the lack of any super-serum. He's not exactly Hawkeye out there.
I love this! Everyone can try and never give up. Everyone can be willing to put their life on the line for something bigger than themselves. Everyone can see people with compassion and do the right thing no matter what. I completely agree.
@@willowmansdaughter not hawkeye but he definitely has his own support strength as a para-rescue special ops soldier. As a counselor he's also a healer in that sense. Likely has a masters degree if he's a licensed counselor so he's a well learned individual with numerous active duty service hours on top of that.
@@willowmansdaughter True to a degree but Hawkeye became Ronin, an assassin. Sam would absolutely NEVER so something like that.
@@jantimatter60 I'm sure he has all of those qualities, this was simply in response to the idea that he's at some kind of non-enhanced disadvantage out there because he doesn't have the serum. It wasn't his "everyman" qualities that pushed the truck back up onto the scaffolding, it was a small fortune in Wakandan tech doing for him what superpowers do for others. I just found it a bit rich when he basically congratulated himself for not needing super-serum when, in that get-up, who would? He's enhanced, just externally.
I think the way the show handled Sam being Captain America was brilliant, having John Walker be the Captain America we didn't want just highlighted how well Sam was suited for the role and even softened the blow that we no longer have Steve 😭
It also gave us a visual of how bad it could go had Bucky in his current state taken the shield. Because Bucky and Walker are two sides of the same coin. One trying to redeem his failure and the other trying to surpass it. Neither being fit for the pressure and scrutiny the frisbee carries with it.
As much as I respect the sentiment, as a black man i would've preferred Sam not be passed anything down, but continue to establish the name he already has. I love Cap, but that mantle could've went away with him to create room for another name to be soldified.
@@TheFreshSoundsFlorida I get that, and to your point, thankfully, there are other characters( like Black Panther) that do that. But at the same time, the main reason Sam stepped back into the game in the 1st place was because "Captain America needs my help." He wasn't looking for new a new role as falcon or anything else. He, like Steve, saw a fight he felt he had to step into. Whatever role that might be. It's not really about ego or representing just his family or race. It's about doing what's right. in this case stepping into a label for the greater good of everyone. ...IMO.
Nah man that speech to the senators was cringeworthy and just, badly done

Excellent summation. There are so many layers to Sam's character. The empathy and values Steve and Sam share make them both worthy of being Captain America.
Bucky's need for Steve's approval was exactly why he couldn't be Captain America. Bucky has to believe in himself. Sam already did but had trepidations.
I'm glad Sam is the new Captain America, but it's unfortunate they didn't explore his character as much until after Steve gave him the shield.
Yea, I can kind of agree but at least we had this series that really fleshed him, and WS, out. I absolutely LOVED the exploration of the black side of things in this series. When Isaiah hugged Sam, my eyes watered. They got me! Lol. The series overall I give a B as there were things that felt rushed, not well thought out and/or lame to me.
100% agree with this. Walker called him Steve's wingman but that's basically what he was until the show. I'm glad we got it at all though. Better late than never

This is perfect. It is everything that I saw and have been saying about Bucky...and the people who feel like he was short changed in this series...no, Bucky's acceptance of himself and his past was brilliantly done and Sebastian Stan sold it. Bucky clearly was not ready to accept the role, he hadn't even accepted himself.
I think what Bucky did was perfect but he could have done with more. He ended up feeling more like a side character than a main character

In my view Sam was the only choice. Steve Rogers knew also. I also really like the relationship between the Sam and Bucky. This is one series I’d want to rewatch. I think Bucky should take the name White Wolf.
Yea, this team up was phenomenal to me. The animosity between them in the movies played for great comedy but not only did we get some of that in the series, we got their bonding and becoming friends. Such a beautiful, touching thing to see ppl come together despite their differences, learn that they are not that different, develop empathy for each other, and bond over their similarities and what makes them each good ppl.
I think he'll start going by white wolf in/by cap. 4 or maybe even black panther 2 if he's in it
@@TreyIM22 Their friendship is one of the most well developed and one of the healthiest onscreen friendships.
No let that White Wolf shit go. Bucky in the comics retakes the Winter Soldier name and remakes it good. Like the Black Widow does.
Probably the most well-written video that you guys have ever done. Great job.
Bucky becoming the white wolf with a full vibranium suit would be badass af!
It will be cooler with him having long hair
Honestly and truthfully I want to see the whole story. And then reunite Sam and Bucky as Captain America and the White Wolf.

Its definitely the right call, and considering that Bucky was the one who gave him the suit, Bucky knows it too. I just hope we get a happier Barnes in any future appearances, like how he was in that last cookout scene. He can still have some guilt over his previous actions, but a bit of joy would be nice too. Him in a supporting role as the White Wolf in Black Panther 2 would be amazing.

"I don't like politics in my superhero stories" tends to be (but may be not all cases) code for: I don't like it when it is not my type of politics is on there.
Yep.
or "i like my comic book movies to contain 2 dimensional comic book people, not a fully developed, complex story that might be relevant to the current times." LOL
@@mkocel People cry for free speech until it something they don't like. The writers are more than entertainers but also artists to express themselves freely with their narrative. I would even waste my time explaining social commentary to them. I'll just tell them, "free speech, bitch."
Except when you don't care but they are so blunt and on the nose that it breaks the immersion or what is suppose to be a completely different universe but NPC money is still alot of money.
For me its more i don't like it when it's poorly done. I love when stories can explore deep concepts like these in a way that everyone can enjoy. It really shows that the writers know the content and care about the issues and ideas without making it pandering for likes or like a cash grab.
I wish that line had been "The only power I have is that I believe we can do better. And also a crapload of technology and really good friends."
Add a dramatic pause before "and really good friends" so that the comedy doesn't overshadow the real message
Wow Sam’s uniform looks straight out of the comics. I love that Sam and Bucky finally had a solid friendship. Steve knew they would work it out. Great Video! Totally on point.
"All the boring stuff with the boat . . ."???
Nothing boring there. Some of the most entertaining and heart felt dialogue was provided during these "asides".
Falcon probably should have had as many episodes as WandaVision. I don't necessarily need another series but this one could have been a little deeper.
Personally, I only had a prob with the boat stuff in ep 5. Thought it went on for too long. I'm not a big TV/streaming guy as an adult but I remember back in the day how TV shows would sometimes have those lil montage moments, which they did in that ep. While a nice call back to my youth, I still just felt that LA scene was a bit much, overall. Other than that, I absolutely loved the digging into Sam's character and his family.
I agree. 6 episodes allowed for tighter storytelling and im glad it didn't have "X amount for the sake of it" like CW shows. But 2 or 3 more would've been beneficial.
@@TreyIM22 I feel that if the series had been a little more stretched out (9 eps rather than 6), the sudden pauses that were the dialogue heavy boat scenes would have felt more balanced across the board.

Really hoping they do something with it seeing as they've healed him from being The Winter Solider
I"ve always liked Bucky but the scene that really made him one of my favorites was when he was in therapy with Sam and said "If he was wrong about you, then he was wrong about me." The execution of that line was flawless.

essentialy, Sharon is the power broker, so I guess she's kinda a villan
And I think we are forgetting one major hero, that one woman in the helicopter, what she did was not easy and it was brave.
You're videos are art. You always put things in perspective. Bucky shld be White Wolf. He's always needed a family who accepts him like Steve did. He found that in Wakanda and w/Sam. So why not work with his family as a hero. Ayo told him to avoid Wakanda for now. But, she called him by his nickname, so he's still invited to the cookout in Wakanda. Plus, they'll need him now that they revealed himself to the world. Thanks again. I really look forward to ur videos!
Bucky owes Wakanda a lot. Brainwash healing, gave him an arm, VIBRANIUM ARM!, gave Sam a Suit.... time to pay up... White Wolf, Agent of Wakanda.
I feel like he probably needs to do more for Wakanda before he could go by White Wolf. It kind of came out of nowhere since he hadn't done anything for Wakanda before.
this is genuinely one of your best videos ever. The depth of analysis, the evidence, the consideration of other viewpoints, all of it is immense. My opinion was "Bucky can't be Captain America because everyone will judge him for his past as an assassin" but you showed me there's so much more behind the decision. Fantastic work man
Marvel never misses with their costume design, seeing his new suit was amazing, the costume department deserve all the praise in the world
@VIBIN JOTARO In the words of Edna Mode... No capes... Stylish as a little half cape would be... It makes no sense to be on a suit designed to be stealthy and used in heavily forested areas. Especially as the MCU has moved away from the suit being a uniform and more combat gear.
New suit is great, but having literally no helmet is a big flaw. Even in this video I caught a moment when Stark fired a repulsor right to the top-side of Steve's head. Imagine he wore something like Sam does 😂
And colors could be darker, for practical purposes as well
The Dalek touch... oof!
And, yeah, good to know that Bucky turned the title of 'Winter Soldier' to a hero. Maybe, that's the route Marvel's planning on taking. It also sounds cooler than White Wolf to me, but I had been hoping that he'd pick that up, given how Winter Soldier is presented as his alt self he's trying to get away from.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned that Sam has been picked by Steve who was WORTHY to wield Mjlonir which only worthy people are able to use, and this indirectly shows how worthy Sam, which Sam has proven countless times
Great point. U are making me tear up again thinking about that scene in Endgame. In the theater fought back the tears from that point all the way through Tony dying and everything while everyone else in the theater was audibly crying...then the cheeseburger scene with Happy and Morgan happened. The dam broke at that point. Sheesh, I'm tearing up now. Lol. Such a great MCU ride so far, overall.

Overall Sam is the better choice, both for his arc and the MCU. Although it would be a poetic arc for Bucky. Starting off as someone Steve strove to be, becoming the Winter Soldier and then overcoming that. But, he still has a little more work to do. I think he could be Cap in the future but that would mean killing off Sam. Which probably won't happen because there is very little payoff for such a valuable character.
Also, steer clear of anyone that genuinely believes Walker should be the new Cap.

Sam was the obvious choice. Bucky might be more ready now, after FatWS, but he wouldn't have been ready before that. Sam's influence is good for him.
Bucky needs time to find himself and believe in himself. He has been taking orders his whole life. That kind of self rediscovery takes time.

Steve recognized the morality, honour, empathy and integrity in Sam when he chose him to take up the shield. Sam was all of those things, Steve just put the shield in front of him. Sam is the perfect Cap to take over... ‘nuff said! So excited for the Sam!Cap movie!!!
Bucky also killed a lot of American military during his time as the Winter Soldier. Obviously he was brainwashed but he still did it. It makes taking up the mantle a bit complicated.
Its also implied that he killed JFK too
@@BaithNa This is addressed in the comics. Brubaker's comics run with Bucky as Cap is so iconic BECAUSE Bucky wasn't the right choice. Steve never gives Bucky the shield. TONY does to help Bucky after Steve's death. Bucky's ID as Cap is hidden and only a few heroes trust him. He proves himself and by doing good, he heals along the way. When Steve came back to life, he's shocked that Bucky is Cap but he tells him what a good job he's done. eh don’t call the fans racist just cause they expected Bucky to be cap, Marvel set it up and changed courses. They needed to make this show to prove to us that Sam is worthy.
So they’re either bigots or they don’t read comics
@@jtthomas5568 ITS DEFINITELY the second one. MOST people watching the mcu have never touched a comic
Call me crazy but for some reason I'm thinking this may be a set up for Bucky to take the Mantel down the road.
100% He just needs to deal with his demons first
Amazing Videos. I Pretty Much thought the same about everything you said. Glad this video exists so I can share it. Thanks.
