This time, we're covering the Combat Knife.
This bladed weapon has been long present, but Black Ops 2 is the first time we've see the knife as an equippable stand-alone.
Of course, bladed instruments have a long history in warfare, from the flint tools of the Neolithic era through early forged iron and steel.
Since the dawn of such tools, soldiers have wielded bladed weapons - and even since the introduction of firearms, knives remain standard issue today.
The modern combat knife has its origins in the bayonet - a blade designed to lock onto the muzzle of a rifle, and provide close-range offensive backup where a slow-firing fusilier might otherwise be left helpless.
Of course, modern automatic weapons and the move away from formation warfare means bayonets are less useful today than they have been in the past - but the modern combat knife still proves useful in a variety of circumstances.
Whether used as a wirecutter, bottle opener or as a last ditch offensive tool, the knife remains an important part of military doctrine, and is unlikely to disappear any time soon.
In-game, the Knife is always a one-hit kill weapon, assuming you can score a successful hit.
Its range is minuscule, however: you must be within touching distance of your opponent, and even then a kill is not guaranteed.
There are two primary modes of attack: the slash, and the stab.
The slash is a very short-range attack that can be performed rapidly and repeatedly: the stab, or lunge extends your reach slightly but has a correspondingly increased recovery time.
The lunge is performed when an enemy is within a suitable distance ahead of you: however, there is no guarantee it will connect, which may leave you vulnerable.
The default slash attack takes around half a second, yielding 120 such slashes a minute. The lunge is some degree slower than this, taking almost a full second to complete.
There's no need to worry about recoil or aim time with the knife, but in terms of handling traits the knife's mobility is higher than any other weapon.
Movement speed is 100% of the maximum base speed, the same as an SMG or Shotgun - but you also gain a 50% bonus to your endurance, allowing you to sprint for 1.5x as long.
Successful use of the combat knife is heavily reliant on timing: knowing the effective range is vital, as swinging too early might result in a miss, leaving you vulnerable.
Pulling off the perfect lunge requires prediction of your enemy's movement, ensuring your foe is dead centre and at an ideal range before making your strike.
Discretion is the better part of valour, and you'll often find yourself at a disadvantage when wielding only your blade.
When pinned down, it's often best to flee, instead of being foolhardy and having your futile attempt at aggression shot down.
The art of lurking is important to master - if you can anticipate an enemy's movement you might lurk ahead, hidden behind a corner or doorway, and wait until your enemy enters your domain.
Running a knife-only build calls for a careful mix of rapid movement and blending in with the shadows - it is important to change up your pace as to best leverage your position.
It's also wise to keep an eye on your health - if you're injured, wait until your health recovers before exposing yourself to any further risk.
Often you'll need to sponge a couple of bullets during a charge, so to enter such conflict in a fragile state might prove your undoing.
In any case, it's generally unwise to run headlong at an opponent - striking from behind or the side will yield far more reliable kills.
Ideally, your quarry will never know you were there - but a non-linear approach works very well in tandem with your concussion grenades.
Stunning an enemy gives you time to close a gap, but taking a straight line towards an enemy facing you might yet give them a chance to gun you down: you'll fare far better taking a less direct tack and striking from the side instead.
The Combat Knife is an ever-present part of your arsenal, equippable as a standalone without the need to spend a point.
While its worth as a weapon is reflected by its cost, it does open up a challenging, alternative style of play: a ninja-esque blend of motion and stealth.
The knife is also a stalwart reserve weapon: should you choose to go without a secondary, you won't be left entirely helpless once you deplete your primary's supply.
To say the knife is a competitive weapon would be misleading, however: you would be ill-advised to take naught but a knife to a gunfight.
Inconsistent performance will prove frustrating, and the tiny range means you will be gunned down all-too often when en-route to a kill.
Still, without such a challenge there would not be as great a reward, and the novel playstyle the knife brings makes for a certain degree of refreshment.

4 out of the 5 classes I used in BO2 were using the "special" weapons with double combat axes to boot. So I had a Knife class, a B. Knife class, a Crossbow class as well as an Assault shield pair with the FHJ-18 AA and it was awesome. It kept the game interesting for me and I did have my favourite weapons in my final class just in case I needed to go beast mode on some squeakers. Great video as always Stuart.

I have only ever used a knife on Black Ops 2 except when I decided to do the camo challenges for every weapon. For me I agree with having all three greed Wildcards, but for perks I'd choose:
1A. Lightweight for maneuverability and the ever useful lack of fall damage.
1B. Blind Eye to stop the irritating Hunter Killers, Stealth Choppers and other AI from killing you so you can keep on your guard.
(I've thought of experimenting with Ghost for a while but I find using a Counter-UAV works to keep you silent)
2A. Hard Wired to make sure you always have field advantage against enemies. Especially since they'll get cocky and rush thinking you don't know where they are.
2B. Cold Blooded to keep you safe and hidden from sights and locators on that cheap-ass Target Finder and MMS, as well as the advantage of your name being invisible to enemies.
(Perk 2 has always been an "Any choice will do" system for me, but I think these work best for me).
3A. Dexterity gives yet another advantage of maneuverability through the ability to climb and mantle much faster meaning you can run behind cover should you be getting shot at.
3B. Extreme Conditioning, again for maneuverability more focused on speed so you can power around every place.
(Tactical Mask is a good idea too, same with Engineer. But I find that Tac Mask becomes redundant when you can use the pairing of Lightweight and Extreme Conditioning to safely sprint past Claymores Bouncing Betties and Shock Charges)
For equipment I use either a Black Hat or EMP, like with XboxAhoy comparing this to a class for a Ninja you can strategically hack/destroy equipment and steal Care Packages at a safe distance without being spotted. Also with an EMP you can quickly disorient, disable equipment and Sentries/Guardians.
I'd choose Black Hat for a stealthier approach and EMP for a more hands-on one.

i usually found perk 2 to be my perk slot in this game that i always have perk greed on (considering i hate picking up weapons when i do go on a good streak i use scav on all of my classes) but, if i'm not running perk 2 greed i have perk 3 greed considering i always use tac mask as well, i hate being concussion'ed and everything like that it annoys me way too much, especially when i am not against snipers i am up against msmc users throwing concussions, EMPs or flashes depending on their classes, hell i have ran into a few who ran tactician and just ran flash and emp i of course didn't really mind, although the EMP did get annoying, he was obviously going for the 100 point assist thing considering you get both the EMP assist and the flash assist if the opponent was both flashed and EMPed he was also putting up uavs constantly so, i would say it was a good strategy.

The EMP is for getting rid of ground scorestreaks(Guardians and Sentry Guns) and enemy equipment. Players just get an EMP effect(no HUD, sights don't work, etc.) The concussion is better for actual players. It slows them down to crawling speed and their turning speed is shot to hell for up to 10 seconds. It also stuns enemy equipment for a few seconds If you're getting rid of enemy scorestreaks/equipment, use the EMP. If you're trying to stun enemies so they're easier to kill, use the concussion

Enjoyed the video, however, there is a simple build that helps counteract the knife's miniscule range, and provide you with better attacking power.
    Perk 1: Lightweight, maximum movement
Perk 2: (Wildcard), Scavenger, Fast Hands, allowing for faster use and resupply of concussion and Combat Axes
Perk 3: Extreme Conditioning, again, maximum movement
Lethal: (Wildcard) 2 Combat Axes, this allows you that extra range needed
Tactical: 1 Concussion, to help flee or close distances

I gotta say BO2 had the worst melee hit detection, so as a melee only player, it was one of the cods that I didn’t really melee in all to often, but when I did, I had more success with the tac knife on a handgun, as I found it was more accurate, and knifed faster.

that makes perfect sense, and I'm sure that Stu even considered fast hands as a viable option. Its probably an extremely good alternative for cold blooded, but in his experience it probably wasn't as good for some reason.

I agree with you on everything but the grenade. I always prefer a combat axe for a ranged weapon. If I were to use a tactical grenade, however, I would probably use an EMP grenade, since that would destroy any Guardians or Sentry Guns while slightly stunning enemies.
