Avihai Levi, an Israeli soldier who served in a prior war in Gaza, gave a speech in the Knesset on Tuesday, detailing the symptoms caused by the mental trauma he suffered from his service.
He spoke about living in constant fear, experiencing night terrors, and needing to rely on alcohol consumption to cope with traumatic memories.
Levi made the comments in a meeting with the Knesset’s Labor and Welfare Committee, where a representative of the Defense Ministry’s Rehabilitation Division told lawmakers that her department will not be able to keep up with new patients from the current war and that the ministry failed to establish a separate department for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Yeah, I had a buddy, close friend and neighbors, who was a Vietnam vet. Also an alcoholic. The most amazing thing. He was never violent with other men who could take him. Only women who were involved with or married to him. So he absolutely could control himself. He flipped me once, I'm 5'3", and I landed hard on the tile floor, back of the head first and it almost knocked me out. He wasn't mad at me or anything, it was just a reaction as we were kidding around and I came towards him playfully. Not exactly sure what switch was flipped for him after he did that to me, as he always called me "his little sis". But he never did anything like that again, was so sorry for doing so and apologized immediately. I know he sincerely loved me as a little sister and we remained friends until he passed away on memorial day a number of years ago.

I have sympathy for him tbh... The majority of Isrealis are not Zionists and you can't avoid military service (at least not easily) - I think this man is struggling with the reality of a war that he didn't ask for, that is fought immorally, for a cause he probably doesn't believe in or want. Even in the US or the UK where I live - the vast majority of those who join the army are from impoverished circumstances, broken homes etc... they recruit from the desperate. First I felt sad for the guy. But then I realize he had no remorse whatsoever for the corpses for the Palestinians killed. No regrets on his actions. The smell annoyed him. Typically Israeli they only care about themselves, their pain, their struggles. He is not awakened at night by the thought of all people he killed.
It's TWO minutes of testimony, fool. You have no idea what his damaged brain is capable of thinking.
No excuses here, but there is a few other videos of Israeli soldiers feeling deep remorse for the murders they committed, and horrific PTSD symptoms. The human conscious never lets a person sleep. They made their beds and their government sits in silence.

Not all of them, there are quite a few former IDF soldiers who speak out against the occupation and give tours of the occupied West Bank. They’re very much at odds with their government. You gotta remember many of these people are forced into service before they’re even truly adults. They’re brainwashed from their day of birth, obviously it doesn’t absolve them of their wrongdoings, but it’s not always black and white either.

At least he decided to be a soldier (he could have refused serving)… The trauma inflicted on any Palestinian in Gaza now: seeing all the dead, the injured, collecting body pieces out of the rubble, burying your children, seeing your house, your mosque, your university turned to dust, homeless while bombs fly around you while you search for water or food. None of them had the opportunity to choose to be or not in the position they are in. None. Every IOF soldier did.
