    For the light problem, pick a pendant light so that the base is in the hole but then you make it hang wherever you need it to hang (sadly that would mean not using the light you already bought or repurposing it in another space), hope that helps !

    Interior tip for the off-center light; Place the dining table in the middle of the room so the light hangs off center, but make it look intentional! For example you can put a taller piece of art on the wall “on the other side” from where the light is off centered, or you could put a taller piece of decor (vase, tall candle holders etc) on that side of the table. That way it will look balanced even though the light is not centered. I have done this myself and seen it other places too and I personally think it can look really cool if you pull it off! Yes the light might be off center, but the total impression of the space is still going to look balanced and well thought out. We just bought our first home, and girl I FEEL your struggles 😂 But I think you’re handling it great, so keep up the good work!

    Popcorn ceilings are the cheaper option because it doesn't need to be precise or perfect, but it also helps blocks noise a little more than a bare ceiling.
    For the dining room lighting, the ideal fix is to get a pendant light that hangs super low so that you can hook it up to the main fixture then use a hook and hang it wherever you need

  • @karajerome9268
    @karajerome9268 Před rokem +60

    you can buy a pendant light and swoop it. So what'd you do is make sure that the cord is longer and then you put a hanging nail thing (forget what it's called) in the ceiling where you want the pendant to hang over the table and put the cord in the nail. Alexandra gater has done a couple of these, her dining room makeover has one in it. love you lots ❤️

  • @wannab_architect3758
    @wannab_architect3758 Před rokem +173

    For the dining room situation I think that you should put it under the light and get a round table and have 4 or 5 chairs around it. Something you could do with that awkward left space is put a china cabinet for some extra dishes, along with some artwork and plants. Another thing that you could do it have a rectangle rug that is central to the room! :D

  • @payengthao5059
    @payengthao5059 Před rokem +27

    Love the dining light fixture! Matches the space so well but, one solve (if you're willing to buy another light) would be to buy a pendant light with a chain that can hang to the center of the room. That way you can center the light even though the electrical is off to the side.

  • @Anggea
    @Anggea Před rokem +8

    Thoughts on the light that doesn’t require cutting into ceiling to move things! See if you can get your contractor to build a plywood or MDF box that is long and narrow but shallow that extension wires can run through to wherever you want the light fixture to hang. You could see about hiding the original mounting plate inside the box and have the wires come out of it or just flush mount the fixture to this additional box. You could then paint that box black, brass or white depending on if you want to embrace it, personally, I’d embrace it, and add some other extra panels or some of the trim moulding boxes like what you did on your walls in a couple places in a way to complement the geometrics of the light fixture and provide some visual interest to your ceiling. You could pull those shapes down onto the door knobs of the doors too with a rectangular plate and a frosted glass knob for the door handles - or some combination to fit the look.
    I’m in Alberta, so I’d check with BC electrical codes, but here you can’t have an outlet junction that you can’t get to (like hiding where wires connect in a wall or in a ceiling behind drywall) so the box idea would have to include some sort of access, which I can totally visualize in my head. Don’t know if you’ll see this, but I could send you some sketches on Instagram if you’re interested.
    Love what you’re doing with the renos!!!! And yah, condos are a beast of their own.

  • @tjnajam
    @tjnajam Před rokem +23

    Popcorn ceilings exist because trying to make a ceiling smooth and keep it smooth all the way is a hard job, and any small uneven spot would be quite noticeable, so builders make it even more uneven to cover up the unevenness, hope that makes sense lol 😅

    Hi I'm an interior design student and I wanted to help you with the dining room table. In order to have enough space to walk, the the table + the chairs would have to be a minimum of 4 ft away from the wall. I actually just learned that today coincidentally. I know its a bummer that the light doesn't center with the table but to distract from it being off centered, maybe put a center piece on the table. Something that pulls your attention to the table first and and light later on! You can also center the light to the table but you will have less walking space. Either way the end goal is for you to enjoy the space so trying out different layouts for the room can also help with deciding :)
    Hope this helped a little and can't wait to see the next episode!

    I did electrical for a little over a year and when we ran into difficult wiring for switches, we used lutron caseta switches, you can get two types of switches, one goes where the actuall switch for the light is, and the other is wireless but can mount anywhere to look like a permanent switch, they're great options! They are smart and dimmable compatible, and they don't look as funky as a lot of other wireless switches do!

    What if you create a “fake beam” type of structure over the hole and route the wires inside of the beam. The beam would be like a long hollow box. Then hang the fixture where you want on the beam! I’m pretty sure they could extend the wires if needed. Just gotta make sure the “beam” is super secure

    I think put the table center with the room is the best choice. I’ve decorated a lotttt of offcentered rooms. Always center the furniture. If the light feel lopsided you can try either putting another lamp on one side, or my fave way is to put a big mirror on the wall farthest from the light. It almost always helps. Especially if you have a bar under the mirror, it completely fixes the problem

    I have 2 ideas for the table... 1st a asymmetrical table: like a real wood looking or round/oval-shaped in a more organic way... idk it might be a cool diy project
    2nd idea: mix between benches and chairs so you would basically keep them underneath the table when not using it and it wouldn't block the way

    For your small bedroom light switch situation. if you check out the phillips hue line you can install their light bulb and theres a light switch attachment you can link to it (also phillips hue). I think this is the best option & looks the most natural.
    @16:27 I have the one on the left and I absolutely LOVE it I recently got mine changed to that and its so smooth and sleek. I’ve went to home depot to look at the other options and i found the rest of the switches too loud

    for the light you can get something, there are such cable boxes that fit directly over the hole for the lamp and a cable can be installed going out of it that you connect with the electrical. Then you would need to drill a hole on the side of the base of your lamp and connect the lamp with this cable. you should be able to get the things you need for that in any hardware store. We had the same problem in our kitchen and you don't notice it at all now :)

    Oooo what if you make like the box of the light longer on one side to make the ilusión that it’s “centered” and then just hang the light closer to the wall using are strong clear wire (like fishing string but… industrial…) but idk hope this makes sense 😅
