  • Here it is, our pilot episode!
Why am I doing this? I travel a lot. Too much. And recently I find myself rocking up in a city that I've never been to before and know very little about. On any level. Culture, language, transport, money, food, etc. But most travel shows are an hour-long, US-centric, full of bad information, and almost exclusively aimed at tourists. So I wanted to create something different. Something aimed at the frequent traveller, something portable and short-form. Something...useful.
In our pilot episode we get you in, out, and around the wonderful city of London, England. We tell you the best way to get from the airport into the city, the best way to get around, how much things cost, and why you should ALWAYS stand on the right.
In follow up episodes we'll be adding a food and drink segment, as well as tips on how to avoid those awkward social and business faux pas.
I really appreciate you taking the time to watch this and welcome any thoughts, feedback, ideas, and suggestions for future episodes. Travel is my passion and I'm excited to share it with you.
Oh and don't forget to subscribe for new episodes in a city near you!

NO, you're not old to be a youtuber; you're a sophisticated well traveled guide. NO one else does a show like yours with the basic tips. Your transpiration tips from the airport to town is the Best. Please expand your show, i.e. longer, with some your sight seeing tips as well. No need to see where the "younger" kids go to get drunk.

Looking back at this video and my trip last year to London, I can honestly say that London is one of my favorite cities that I have been to so far. The classic buildings, immense restaurants, ease of travel. I truly miss london so much.

Tip: you don't need to tip in the UK, either at restaurants, cafes or far food takeaways. We just don't feel it's needed to. Tip: credit card/ debit card are contactless, no numbers just hold card to machine, it had contactless on the video but he pinned...Tip: cycle. Get a bike. There everywhere. Card into the machine, pay £2 every 24hrs to register. 30 mins free cycle then it's very pricey after that, so cycle to get around but find a docking station within 30 mins, it goes back to default once docked so keep doing that. Cheater than taxi. Tip: find a shop or local store like Sainsburys or Tesco. There smaller store but food is cheap rather than high priced cafe/ restaurants.

I'm a Londoner, so this was a great video to watch. You've covered a great amount here, but one tip I would always mention to people is to simply carry an umbrella around with you. If you ever get caught out in the rain, you WILL get ripped off on a "cheap" umbrella that will no doubt break before you get back home!

well at least u know ur safe and also there have been reports of people falling asleep in the uber cabs and the driver takes them for a MASSIVE detour before getting to the location to financially rip the passenger off so it works in both ways, the uber decides what he/she wants to do with the price, real taxis have a set price on a meter at the front and that tells them the price but some cabbies are nice (my dad anyway) and knocks off maybe £30 if stuck in a lot of traffic causing a £30 journey to be £50
anyway the best way to get around london is by rail and tram

I'd say avoid using the tipping in the uk when paying by card. A lot of places that offer tip when paying by card don't actually go to the staff and instead is kept by the owner. A few of my friends have told me this. I believe as well when it goes through the card system and they do get it they get taxed on those earnings.

Few things about London Underground. Try to avoid taking the underground in busy hours like 7-9 morning and 4-7 evening. The fare would be high. Unlike Subway in US you can buy a one way ticket and go anywhere. In London they have different zones and you will swipe your card entering and exiting the tube. This means you'll be charged the correct fare for the journey you've taken, you will be charged depending the zone you are in. It’s expensive and clean. But if you’re visiting for 2-3 days. Don’t buy the visitors pass. Just get the Oyster card and Top it up whenever you need it. Its very easy!

Just came back from London, found Uber was only a little cheaper than cabbies. Really, the visitor Oyster card is a steal, compared to cabs, as long as you know where you're going and plan for any trips outside the center of London so you can put extra money on it for those. Took Uber from Zone 1 to Gatwick and it was $100 during off-peak hours.

Just thinking about it now makes me miss it a lot. The food was great and most of the people we ran into were very nice! The hotel we were staying at even let us check in early.
One tip I would recommend is budget extra money for cab fare. Since London is so huge we took cabs to many of our destinations.

Compared to the early videos like this about London your episodes improved a lot. Glad you added the food section and it would be great to have a "special-section" in each video which could be a unique place, store, restaurant etc without becoming the 100000 video on youtube talking about the Champs Elysee in Paris, Burj al Arab in Dubai or Empire State in New York City. Most new bank cards now don't need you to tap in your number. Just hold the card to the screen and it's done. I think the limit is £20-£30 spend. The obvious looking the right way when crossing road. Remember queueing for things are mandatory! If someone asks if you're alright just say yes, or alright back even if your not its just the way we greet each other! Xxx

I am flying into Heathrow but going to Croydon, which I understand is a long way(about an hour) So what CAN I use with my oyster card to get from Heathrow to Croydon???? Also, what's the easiest way to get to Stonehenge from Croydon?? thanks for all your help.

    • @agent_605
      @agent_605 Před 8 lety

+ThePrettyeyes341 The best way I can think of is getting the Piccadilly line to Gloucester road, then getting either the district or circle lines (they go from the same platform) then getting a Southern national rail service to east croydon. To get to Stonehenge, you can't use your oyster card. You have to buy a railway ticket to Salisbury and get a train to Clapham junction then change to South west trains service to Salisbury, then you have to get a bus to the Visitor centre

Two important points I learned on my recent first trip to London: the Oyster Card is the same as the Sydney Opal Card with one exception: tap on and off for trains but don't tap off for the buses or you'll be charged double. Only tap on for the buses. The other important point for Australian tourists is that, we assume people walk on the same side of the street as you drive. This is the case in most countries and Australians will assume they do the same in the mother country as we do at home. You mentioned that you should stand on the right hand side on an escalator. It's the same when walking down the street. It's probably to be more consistent with the continent. Don't do that in Australia. You will get those same stares of ire if you try to walk on the right in Sydney (or you'll be crashing into people).

    some tips.
    1) You can buy an oyster card from Heathrow airport train/underground station. Any unused balance can be refunded at the airport as well on your departure. Touch in AND out with your oyster, even if the gates are open and there are no staff around. Not touching will mean a penalty fare is charged.
    2) always let people off the train first - or you will be barged out of the way.
    3) You can ride 2 buses within 30 minutes of the first ride starting for a single fare.
    4) Several bike hire schemes are available and are a very good way of getting around
    5) If travelling to other cities by train, then advance tickets or web only tickets can be significantly cheaper than buying tickets from the station.
    6) Coach A3 travels from Gatwick to London Victoria coach station for £10. other coach services are also available.
    7) Most chain supermarkets have self scan and pack checkouts. Google how to use these as you will incur the wrath of Londoners if you keep calling for an assistant to help you use the machine.
    8) Oyster - peak time is before 9:30 am. After 9:30 am, off-peak fares apply

The Heathrow Express/Connect service only arrive at Paddington in west London and so most people still find they then need to get on a tube to reach their final destination, and so it's not quite as central as portrayed.

One piece of advice, I would give is that Oyster can be topped up at various places not just at the stations as many convenience stores have top up options at the till upon entry and get a 24hr travel card or 7 day one whatever you prefer.

The tube is your best friend and really isn't complicated. Be sure to buy an Oyster card by visiting any of the tube stations, you can top it up at anytime and I think it lasts a few years before it goes bad, if at all.. If you ever take the wrong train, just get off at the next stop and walk directly across the plaform and it will take you back to where you came from. Actually, getting lost and finding your way on the tube is the best way to get around.. you can find some places that you might not have ever seen if you just hop on a train and let it go for a few stops. Atleast, that's what I used to do when I was younger.

Loved this video, mate! :D This was very informational and I'm now actually planning my second trip to London, England sometime this year, now with more enthusiasm because I'll actually know some "pro tips" like how their currency is also called Quid (Probably just murdered that spelling) and is plural already. So thank you :D You make totally wicked content and you always manage to make me smile. :) I'm sharing your channel (along with this video) to a few of my traveling friends and even family! Well, the family that likes to move out of a 20 miles radius... But yeah, thank you! Though I don't know if you're planning to or not (since it isn't a really touristy city) but if you get the chance I'd LOVE to see a short Birmimgham, England video? It isn't the most pretty cities as they got a big deal on concrete, but it's one of my favourites and it's also a business-esc city. Not that you have to but I'd love to see it! Maybe even a video where you collect highlights of different cities around Europe? Where you go to some big cities and just take small clips saying "Oi mate this city has great food!" and "Be sure to check out the roasted human in Rome!"
I don't know if that would be an ideal video, but to me I would find it cool, especially to people who are just visiting cities for a day or two.
But anyway, thanks so much for reading! I can't wait to see more epic videos of yours! :D

Haha! :) No, thank you for everything! Your channel makes content that is just totally wicked! But whoa! o: No one I know likes Birmimgham besides me, that's awesome! I'm actually planning on living there in the future! But anyway haha, thanks so much :D Not many people make this quality of traveling content and still manage to be nice to their viewers! You're the best, mate. But yeah! I'm planning on visiting B-ham with my mother next year sometime along with Hong Kong (Your video inspired her) Can't wait to see the future of your epic channel, especially if you get around to making a video on Birmimgham :D Thanks so much for reading! Going to go watch your other videos again.

You didn't mention the red London buses. They are everywhere, 8000 of them run all over London quite a lot of routes all night (as do some Tube lines Thurs, Fri & Sat nights-all night) especially in Central London. Oyste rcards contactless cards are needed, buses take no cash fares. Although slower than the Tube (or Underground as it is known as well) you can see lots of sights and landmarks from the top deck of a bus. And of course jump off and visit them and back on a bus again!

I lived in London for 5 years and the best and cheap way to travel is the public transport, and as for food, hit the local chippy, places that serve a hearty English breakfast and also look for supermarkets, they do price slashes daily on ready to eat meals, sandwiches and pastries, these might go off in a day or two but it is good to eat for the day. and Never forget your umbrella

Great video, almost a historical artefact. Prices are almost double but the city is now cheap, due to the fall of the £. Service charge is now ubiquitous, but no tipping on top. Everything's contactless or phone based, and oyster is becoming obsolete.

all good tips, but I think it is worth adding if you are traveling to London from another European city, the airport to choose especially if you are staying a short time is London City LCY. It could not be more close.

+Attaché Actually, many Londoners want to close London City as it creates huge amounts of noise and pollution for the surrounding area and when the new Crossrail line opens, business nearby would be easier to do from Heathrow since it is bigger and has way more flights to choose from. Also, LCY is only connected by DLR, which is only in the eastern part of London whereas Heathrow is connected by tube if you only want to use your oyster card and the Tube is every 5 mins to Heathrow and Gatwick local trains support the oyster card too.

    • @TheMratitude

Is there any way you can discuss Airbnb options, in these cities? Can you do an Airbnb segment. This is the only way I'm able to roll in such places.

As a Briton and a waiter, I would only ever tip in a restaurant and around 10% suffices. But never feel forced to do so. For example if the service is bad, your waiter will understand if you choose to tip less or even not at all. I know some people don't like to hear it but it really does make up a large portion of our salary. I myself only earn £5.85/h so in order to have a more decent rate, tips do help!

It doesn't matter how many times you use your Oyster card in a day. The most you can pay is about £11. After that it's free. Some services cost more, taxis for example.
