How Farms Work is a CZcams channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. Our videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and GMO crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.
Be sure to subscribe for new videos every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday at 11AM Central!
The calves looked good even the ones that were under the weather. I used to play with the calves when they were about that old. I miss doing that. But maybe I'll do it again.
You're dad bidding on the calves made me smile. When I first got out of School I worked at the stockyard and the farmers who bid never make eye contact with the auctioneer.
Jeff Gixer can you elaborate on that I'm just a crop farmer
Drew Tibert when I used to work the ring, the regular buyers always sat in the front row and the farmer buyers set up higher in the back. The regular buyers just bid by moving their card or hand or a nod, but most of the farmer buyers always tried to hide it. They would just move their finger or hand a little and be starring at the wall on the side of the side of the arena. They thought they were being sneaky and fooling people but everyone knew who was biding. Just always made us smile when they did that. You see that at machinery auctions too.
You keep that barn really clean!
Any bottle calves that end up at the Kuster farm are pretty lucky😊
Good to see bottle calves on the farm again.
Your channel is what got me started also raising bottle calves on CZcams! I’m glad you are getting some more because these videos are my favorite!
Oh man this brought back some great memories of going to the auction with my grandfather (we won't talk about how long ago ) , It was some of the best times growing up.
I so much enjoyed the ride, the auction and the doctoring on the calves and the love you and your dad expressed. Thank you and may the Lord bless you and yours!
Yay, bottle calves! Always something new and interesting at Kuster Farms.
Thanks Ryan love the video on the Calves and info too .
Ryan very nice to see your dad on the video that today and also was great to see the baby calves and to see how your other one is doing also the other one is full of itself even tried to kick your little bit as I went by or just feeling it’s oats one of the two great videos enjoy them when you put them out look forward to them seeing them and you have a great day hope you get that rain you need
I hope you keep us up to date on the calfs. Every couple of days till they are out of the danger zone. Thanks for the video Ryan!
Nice to see animals in the barn again. Trip to the auction with your Dad. Did that as a kid with my Dad, always educational. Cheers!
Hey man, love watching your videos. very informative for someone like myself who is from a country where farms like yours just simply do not exist.
Thanks for all the information and explanations.
Keep up the good work!
Fritzy is looking good !
You sir have a kind heart
Great video!! Thank you for the incite on how an livestock auction works.
It sure is good to have insight ahead of time so more attention can be toward the calves.
Could you find a dairy that would give you first dib's on their calfs before they send them off?
Save them trucking fees & you might get a better quality starter?
We have gotten rain the past two days in my area of Oklahoma. With the storm yesterday evening bring a huge amount of rain in a short span of time. Needless to say, at least some of the farmer's in my area have been getting some rain.
I totally agree with you on the veal. I am a meat-eater in general, but I don't like the thought or taste of veal. Keep up the good work from an Illinoisan.
My husband and I bottle fed a British White calf last year. This summer we sent her back to the ranch and this makes me miss her so much! 🐄😭
That was a good video showing the going on's of the stockyard sale.
I like to see you guys raise these young calves; job well done
Great video, Ryan! Fritzy looks pretty cute prancing around in the pasture!
Love this video! I like to see how bottle calves are happy at the farm!
Great video Ryan. I used to work on a veal farm. Never ever ever will i ever do that again. Although the money was great but, no way will i ever go back to that horror. Nothing beats working on a dairy farm. Keep up the great job Ryan, I appreciate it
Hope you guys get the rain you need, and your calves do well!👍
Good morning I used to work on a dairy farm feeding baby's they where chained up we checked every day fed them morning and night it didn't hurt them once they big enough they want in to pens . we got almost 2 inches of rain in a couple hours it was crazy hay and corn looking really good now actually raining now in western new York have a great night Ryan the best to you and your family
My favorite part of raising calves is watching them run and jump and especially the calf races between the young fellas
Nice work, Merry Christmas all the best for you all.
Thanks for the video!
Love your video today... looking at purchasing many bottle calves next year. I'M GOING TO try to direct purchase.... got an old batch of bosses with 475 head of milk cows... going to try to buy them and avoid the stress

Bottle calves is a really good hobby.raising my second batch now only lost one so far.
Enjoyed.
I’ve babysat many calves in my younger days. Luckily we had calf pens. I always enjoyed feeding them.
Fritzy is a beautiful calf.
Love watching you guys.
Greetings from Norway ;)
When I was a hired hand on a dairy farm some 33 years ago bottle feeding was my favorite time
I really enjoyed this video. Love cow auctions!!
We got a huge rainfall here in Toronto the last 24 hours. Almost a seasons' worth!
Great video
Thank you Ryan. I really enjoyed this video and going to the sale barn. Since you family was dairy in past, do you know some of the active dairies? Could your dad call and say, we maybe interested if you have some calves you are planning to sell? Cut out the stress on the calf and middle man cost?
I like the vids that show you buying calves.
Well after we went to a private ram sale today after sitting on the Greater London car park known as the M25 I realise why I love the countryside and its roads. Do feel kind of mean where they have buyers coming from all over the UK they put on food and drinks with homemade lamb and beef burgers being the delicious.
I had one dropped off at my place. Pink eye couldn’t see it at sale I guess. So lucky me !!! Black white face. Another good video !!!
Fritz is like is that a friends yasssss!!!
Love cow auctions . Great video.
Great video nice looking calves
Love your content
Good luck with the new calves Dwight, hope they are lucky for ye:)
Like your vids and yes a couple of them are kinda sickly. I hope they all make it. Keep us posted on how they’re doing.
Nice facility
This regulation affected beekeepers as well. Used to be able to get tetracycline without any problems to treat American Foul Brood. Now have to have a prescription from a Vet before you can order it.
Interesting!
I have to agree with the regulation, people shouldn't be able to get antibiotics without an Rx. Overuse and prophylactic use makes it easier for resistance to form. I've got MRSA from working in a nursing home and hospital; I'm on an IV at home right now because the oral tablets don't work d/t resistance. You really need to know the pharmacodymanics/kinetics before using/administering antibiotics. I'm not against the use of antibiotics in animals at all, it just needs to be done right! Also I hope your new calf gets better soon!

Nicee another video 😁😁
2 years ago i had a Iberico’s pork farm here in Spain but they usually had low price and no profitable in intensive farm so i close the farm 😩
9:41 how much milk they drink each day?
🇪🇸🤘🏼
How farms work! Ryan i really like your blue pick truck its a nice color blue
Where you get your calves do you get to look at the animals before the are sold or is the only time you get to see them is in the ring, ( in Ireland in most marts we can see seethe animals before they are sold, it's good to see what you are getting)
They look, nice except for the sick ones, we just got some feeders yesterday!
The auction parking lot was pretty empty, is that because of farms selling out and there is less cattle and fewer buyers? Or is just a slow day there and guys needed to be in the field?
Good work ryan I want to raise bottle calfs like y’all that away if we need to catch them we can
That’s a nice auction barn! None of the auction barns around us are that nice
I always kept mine isolated from my main heard for a while do you?
Live the Arnold Palmer. I teach in Latrobe, Pa and am the golf coach there. My team plays at Latrobe Country Club, the home of Arnold Palmer. I had the fortune of talking to him many times.
We got a few more brown Swiss bottle calves for around 100 which is really cheap so keeping our fingers crossed that when the prices tripled a few years back was just a small bump in price
Dad needs his own CZcams channel.
We got 4 inches of rain in 1 and 1/2 hours Tuesday here in the philly area and we keep getting rain
Excellent
This might be a stupid question but is Rockville on their own well or on city water?
so if you wait them to full grow and slathered how long it will take them to full grow and what weight they will be and how much you’ll get it out of it when you sell them full grown. i know kind a personal questions but will be appreciate it if you can answer it. sorry for the english still learning. Thanks
Do y’all look for a particular breed at the sale or just whatever you decide on that day?
Great video i like these kinda of video do more
Nuflor works wonders for respiratory illnesses. Pretty much the best antibiotic now a days.
What is the name of that medication you give to the calves from the auction yard?
61! In Canada we pay 150-200$ per head
You are right! I couldn't even think about eating a cow that is this age or a few weeks older. I could never be a cattle farmer. :)
if i there was a job were i could work with baby calves all day i would be in heaven cause them bottle calves are so cute
Have you guys ever looked into getting a sprayer
I’ve got to ask is there a new trailer in the budget? I know the one you own now works but it’s starting to rust really badly
Ryan do u guys buy bottle calves to raise to finish steers ?
What is the difference in the 2 types of veal? I had it before and its not to bad never knew there was 2 types of it.
Bro..were those calfs doing the tide pod challenge?while getting there meds .....I really appreciate all the insight
That fan sounds like a lawnmower
How often do you gotta bottle feed the calves??
How far from Stanley are you? I love watching your videos man it’s awesome to understand how things on the farm work, the only thing I don’t know how to do on the farm is drive tractor and the skid steer, I’m sure their fairly easy to operate
I love your vids man keep em up
Veal is big in Europe but not as much here in US as you have stated Ryan one did look poorly but that could be from not being around other clave at the farm it come from or other word homesick.
How much of a dosage do yall give the calves. I just got a bottle calf and would like to give him a dose so he don't get sick.
Get ya some nutridrench it really picks the calves up and gets them going. Thanks good video
Good video
Are you finding spider mites in the beans because of heat stress?? Spider mites love the hot dry conditions
How often do you feed the calves
What’s in the middle of the barn on the floor?
Of course there’s a can of kickstart in the bed
Lucas' Account that's what you need to start your day on the farm!LOL
Ether.. makes a person pass out when used correctly lol
I love this video ! :)
Does calf look great for their age👏😊
How young were those calves? Were they heifers or bulls? Non-farmer trying to figure out the business of bottle calves.
