How Farms Work is a CZcams channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. Our videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and GMO crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

Thanks for a very enjoyable video Ryan. We use creep feed our beef calves and I loved climbing in and dumping the feed in their bunks and having them all crow around to get to the feed. Well till they got close to weaning age @ 500#s then it was watch my toes GUYS, LOL!
Hello from the other side of the other side of the world..the Philippines. I am an American expatriate living here now and just started a farming/business related vlog. I raised calves which I bought at auction or directly from the dairy. I have a suggestion. because you are feeding a lot of calves a really easy way to mix the milk is to use an old washing machine. Easy to fill as it is automatic..just add the replacer when it is full of water.
Ah miss feeding the calves..... that was my favorite job
I love the smell of milk replacer.
Great set up!
I know! The smell is great!
It smells really good
It must be a little different feeding calves where the old stanchions were (compared to 2014 and before). The calf barn at my uncles' farm was one of my frequent hideouts, not only because the calves were there, but the fridge full of pop was as well. It has been a long time since I stepped into that space, but it is still standing and in use. Between that, the hay mow, and the machine shed, I always had plenty of things to explore. Whenever I visit the farm, I can't help but follow a little of that old routine. Thanks for rekindling some memories.
When I was 4-5 my dad use to take me to work with him and he'd let me help feed bottle calves. This brings back memories.
Love seeing the babies and how you have to take care of them. Please make the videos longer! I love them. Thanks!
I grew up on a dairy farm during 60's and 70's and I can recall feeding calves for years. Thanks Ryan for bringing up fond memories of my youth, Keep up the great work,
Mark, Bemidji, MN. subscriber.
I did the same near Benson MN
I like seeing you doing chores around the farm!
Like the video Ryan on feeding the calfs .
I love watching you feed your calves I would love to see a lot more of this.
Thanks for sharing Ryan...
Gee ya make it look so easy and fun ...lol
What a wonderful video!! School teachers need to have this for the elementary children to see. Better yet your barn would make for an awesome field trip!! Baby cows 🐄 are so precious
Really Nice Video! Short, Sweet and Simple!
I hate those people who claim calves are being abused by farmers it’s dumb but I do love feeding calves
Great video ryan! Love the white calf. Beautiful animals!
Awwwwwww so cute
Great videos you make very educational keep doing what youre doing !
3:30 Bruh 😂
Thanks alot. Good video.
nice setup for bottle feeding claves.
Looks like you guys have a pretty good system for feeding calves.
I like the calf videos the best!
Used to feed babies like that always a fun job I miss it have a good day
You have that system down and it seems to be working fine.
Great looking calves. Can the barn corner be repaired with grout injection to stabilize the ground and raise it? Good luck on the grain bin build. My ears are ringing for you. We will win the trade wars and grain prices will come back. So will cattle. Great investment. Good luck with 3rd crop.
I think your doing all the work. Teagards...
So cool.
i remember back in the days i use to brake my back doing all that work, for many years now i am all done with all the calves from start to Finnish in 10 to 15 min,, no dam bottles to mess with
that drill works awesome stir up the milk replacer,we always used a stick,it kind of bite!calve`s look good
We used the whisk that came with the powder. A new whisk might go up to the house and be used in the kitchen.
Lots of bottles 😂
Uhg, didn't mind chores till it was time to go on a weekend outting or vacation. Then you needed to find someone to do it while your gone. Nice looking calves....
Boy they sure suck that stuff down quick!
For the manure have you thought of building a bunker for it so you can pile on the manure and wait till fall from spring/Summer and fall/winter in the spring manure production?
Great vid
Hey Ryan start running your mixer drill in foward instead of reverse.
Here’s a dumb question. Are they tied up? That keeps them in place
How much of the dry pellet feed per calf a feeding?
Do you start adding a cup of wheat per day near weening time ?
sorry..sent the first before I was finished writing..anyway. .the temperature of the water and the amount is easily controlled by the settings on the machine. put on wash cycle and it will mix very well in about 1 minute. turn to spin cycle after its mixed and it will pump out the milk into your bucket as needed. the machine is easy to clean after useing it..just put though another automatic cycle.
A Foreigner Farming in the Philippines you can hit EDIT and ad stuff to your reply
I wonder if he likes the Green Bay packers
I always thought the milk replacer smelled SO good but I could never bring myself 2 taste it lol
When I was a child on our dairy farm I tasted everything, figured if the animals could and would I would try it also. I tasted dog food, cat food, silage, corn silage, pig pellets, cow feed, milk replacer, etc.
How long have you been doing this operation
Ryan do they ever bite the ends of the bottles off?
What is the milk replacer you use
Awwwwww!!!!!
Hi,
I see you have one bottle with a "peach teat" nipple. How do you like it so far? Have a great day
How long does it usually take to do chores??
all day...it's a farm...work is never done.
sun up to sun down. Still stuff needed to be done into the night with more things always being added
Why do you have diary calves?
Would it be cheaper to have a couple of Holsteins cows to get milk from rather than buying the milk replacer?
No and high maintenance
It would cost more to feed the cow
About how long does it take to raise a bottle calf to 500 lbs?
Chip Py it all depends on how much you feed them and how often u feed them like just 2 or 3 times a day
Hey ryan I know you do a good job of feeding, but I have this one thing, I have to ask! Insteading of putting milk in after the water, why don't you put the milk in first, so you want have to mix it up a's much, to make it easier? But inerways good job of feeding, a nice looking calves.
I'm Italian, I would like to know how much corn and soy in america are estimated, how many dollars per ton?
Have you ever tasted the milk replacer to see if it does in fact taste like milk?
It's almost the same, and smells just like "soy milk". So I suspect if you try some of that, you'll know just about what it tastes like.
It does have milk content in it
👍👍👍👍
Thanks for the video we use an 18% calf starter to get them going it is a sweet feed which they like it very much. When cleaning the bottles do you use any Clorox or Dawn soap to cut the grease out of the bottle after the milk was in it. We found it cuts down on the bacteria keeps the healthier calves gaining weight. Have a great day
The Farming Life czcams.com/video/oCqjPJcmTf0/video.html I thought you said that Krone balers can't Bale straw.
The Farming Life can you ever just watch a video and not tell somebody how you do it. It is a lot better setup than you have. Have a great day
What is your return on investment.
Hummmm...one 45 foot rubber hose...45 t-connectors...45 nipples....and one 55 gallon drum and you're done...nonetheless, that's a lot of work...great video as usual R.
You would have issues with
1) Sanitizing it. matters a lot.
2) Portion control. matters a lot.
3) Individual animal inspection. Herd health is a big deal, and nothing beats personal visual inspection.
Even down to how playful the calves are, how quick they come to the feed, etc.
Socializing calves to human contact has value as well. Friendly cows are more pleasant to work with.
And happy animals are more productive.
Like all young things, they are more vulnerable. Since they are big relative to say, dogs, it's easy to forget those ones are probably all less than a month old.
Nice looking young animals there though!
Why are they tied up
To prevent the spread of disease until they’re off milk.
Isnt it more efficient to have groups of 5 cows in a room with straw. Here in holland they are mostly sitting alone in a sort of cage or in bigger groups not on chaines.
its best to keep them away from each other at that age all they want to do is suck on anything they can find and will be nursing each other if they can get to one another and since they are all bulls guess what they would be sucking on
Are these calves raised for veal?
5
Why are you feeding wierd small chickens milk
CoolishBeanz chickens go moo and cows go brugack
