I honestly believe that day trippers, one night campers and locals are the worst offenders for litter , I live in Scotland

While I accept that many of us van lifers probably do litter, a fair few I meet hang by the motto - Leave no trace - something I have practiced for years. I just feel that a small minority of our community, disproportionately disaffect the harmony between the communities we pass through, and other decent folk in those areas.
personally I want to meet the local community, buy from their local facilities, and enjoy the environment.

The southern end of Glencoe had plenty of litter earlier this month. But there were carpets! So not your average tourist!!

Must confess, I cannot recall seeing any of the van life community hauling carpets around - they take up too much space - sounds like a sad case of fly tippers in one of the most beautiful places.

Chris , Majority of Litter i notice at side of the road comes from the Bin Lorries i was behind one recently , and trash was just flowing out the back, and another that grinds my Gears is people who don't pick up their Dog Mess, or do pick it up and wing it in a bush / tree and you see it hanging there really boils my piss that one, i have 3 dogs and would never leave on the ground..

I live next to a primary school and a high school. The high school kids walk past at lunchtime, dropping all their litter (ignoring the street bins) from their takeaways, and sweets. A member of staff then comes after they're all back in school and picks up all the kids rubbish. Why? Teach them to respect their neighbourhood and make them pick their own rubbish up. 😡

I was passing a queue of cars waiting at the lights the other day when I heard a can hitting the road. I'm very sure it was thrown out of the car window adjacent to it, but I didn't see the bloke throwing it. Cans, plastic bottles and food wrapping are frequently thrown out of vehicle windows. Another problem is the overflowing bins in remote locations, often picked over by gulls and certainly spread by the wind. The public can't be blamed for that, local authorities have to ensure bins are emptied. As far as the NC500 is concerned, I wonder what proportion of motor homes up there are hired by people who have never driven or stayed in one before is. It looked like quite a few were hired the last time I was up there.

    Another great podcast, loved it.
"Vegans or Normal people" love this.
As for the litter, we live at a seaside town where lots of campervans stay over night or long. I can probably say I've not seen any rubbish around these campervans but around cars, be them day tourists or locals there always seems to be some people who will just open their car door and drop rubbish on the floor.
I think educating people is probably the answer but where do you start.
In my younger days there was the "Keep Britain Tidy, Don't Litter" campaign on the TV. Even chew gum wrappers had it on.
The young go on about the state of the planet but seem to want everyone else to sort it out. Think they need to get their own house in order first.
    Sorry for the rant, notđŸ€ŁđŸ€ŁđŸ€Ł

There's a carpark at the top of our road where car loads of folk congregate to eat there carry outs from nearby fast food joints.
It's fair to say that most but not all put their rubbish in the two bins provided.
During the night, foxes, seagulls and other wildlife raid the buckets and leave the place like a tip

    This is what happens sometimes
People park up at a lay-by
Open the car doors at the same time then all the rubbish from the cars blows out
And then there are the scumbags

I like the Japanese approach to parking and Kei cars. 🚗
A fair bit of rubbish comes from the bins we use which get blown over all too easily. They are not a 'green' solution!

Having visited Scotland in both Campervans and Motorhomes on several occasions I can only say it as I've seen it, on my most recent trip of Three weeks I TWICE witnessed groups of youths using carparks and park up's as little party venues in their boy racer cars, leaving piles of rubbish, setting camp fires that ended up as bonfires, using torn down fence posts. Empty beer cans, supermarket carrier bags etc. I'm not claiming that leisure van owners don't litter, but I'm damn sure that locals, particularly young locals, do most of the major littering.

Obvious and simple solution bag rubbish and take it home where you pay rates for rubbish collection.that goes for all mode of vehicle.😊

I can’t understand why the very attraction that the visitors go to explore and enjoy then selfishly can’t be bothered to simply bag their own rubbish which they brought with them and take it home but I don’t think they will ever change it’s sad

Campers/motorhomes stand out more and catch people's eyes so are made out to be the culprits. Having watched several HGV drivers throw bags of crap out of their windows when parked up (1 was even literally parked on the pavement NEXT to a bin!!) and of course countless cars just dumping stuff, it's clearly not all about campers. I'm not stupid enough to think some campers aren't the issue but a walk around my town shows that sadly litter is just a standard part of UK life and many people just don't even see the issue with tossing everything from vapes to sofas on the side of the road. Sadly it does also seem to be a particular issue with kids - probably write for an hour on why that might be.

Personally I’ve done the NC500 but have been to Arran and Skye but I have to say I think in general there is a lot of drivers that throw litter everywhere. Why can’t they just take it home and put into the bin. I see a lot at the end of motorway major junctions.

I love the rant - it made me smile, but I would challenge that view of housing and parking - sadly not everyone can afford the house they would like, and local planners, and builders cram in more housing, sometimes at the expense of sensible parking options/solutions. There is no law that states you cannot buy a car - well that I know off yet.
Litter - I think it is a % of a variety of factors - but some of it is van lifers - just not all of us - and sadly we all seem to get blamed for the actions of a minority. I do try to mix with the community where ever I travel, buy local produce, and make sure I take everything with me - more so if I generate any rubbish. I also accept that young locals, and fly tipping are probably higher than that small % of van lifers that leave their litter behind.

Hi Chris. I would agree re ur blog But my problem is human waste.
Someone with an old shaggged out transit with a homemade ikea bed in the back, taking a dump in the bushes. Bits of Aldi arse roll all over the shop. There should be provision made to easily dispose of one’s rubbish and human waste.

The worst of the litter we see is in lay-by's, it's mostly car tourists in my opinion, it did spike massively during covid.
We live just off the NC500,so there's plenty of campervan traffic and there's not a lot of rubbish lying around outside the towns.

I’d argue most camper van owners love the great outdoors, therefore the least likely demographic to litter.
Not enough bins at tourist areas doesn’t help the situation, but just take it home.
Any time I see littering, especially from car windows, I get full on rage. đŸ˜€

Is it not a matter of the rubbish building up, but of the fact it's not removed that is the issue?
There is not a place on earth, where humans are, that rubbish does not exist. Where is the local council rubbish collection?

  • @travelsinroxannevw1573

This might not be obvious to all but, I know locals in the Highlands are frustrated by motorhome traffic as well as people camping in lay-bys . How would anyone like it if nearly every day a travellers are parking up near you home which had a great view from the window to see 3 vans parked up outside your home! Daily! For eternity!
For this reason the locals I believe force their will on local councils by fly tipping at these sites and demanding they put up no overnight parking signs. The locals are crafty bunch of Scots.
In my opinion they are not the worst.
I believe the absolute worst of all are the people who hire motor homes and don't feckin give a toss and the great outdoors. They're just doing this once in a lifetime thing. They have no respect for the outdoors. I've seen on at least 2 occasions toilet wastes emptied in nice parkups.
The third group which sits below the motor home hired bunch are the car hired bunch. They are just up for the few days. They'll merrily toss out litter to keep the hired car clean when driving the NC route
Now let's look at the most observant, conscientious nature loving list (top down)
    1. VW owners like me and you hah ha
    2. Self converted campervan owners
    3. Motor home owners
VW owners go on the top for being most conscientious, cos we've been doing it since we invented living in a van.. Because we love nature and respect it and never leave a foot print.
The Scottish councils defunding of the essential services for camping is a bad move, they should be created more facilities similar to Norway and the rest of Europe

So... Crack on and rant, it's entertaining to watch, especially as your opinions are not far from my own. As for who is at fault for rubbish, well certainly the councils/authorities are complicit, by not providing the infrastructure, to dispose of rubbish, but the main culprits are people, not necessarily campers, other tourists or locals, just simply downright lazy people. Ther's a variety out there, the ones who will litter, no matter what, then there's the ones only litter when there's no bins and then the majority of us who will either bin their rubbish or take it home. As for your recycling rant, OMG that was like looking in a mirror, but a lot younger version of me. đŸ€Ł
