The Weird Genius Of Adventure Time

  • Adventure Time is one of the very greatest animated shows of all time. The best Adventure Time episodes are far more than what their surface presents, and this is part of its charm. Jake, Finn and Princess Bubblegum created a world that was complex, nuanced, and importantly, surprisingly harsh. That is exactly why Adventure Time is so hard to forget, it became a mirror the very things we experience and recognize.

I think the best way to bring AT to life would be to do it in a hyper realistic style. Like make Jake an actual English Bulldog that shape shifts and talks it would be SO freaking weird. Base jump right into the uncanny valley. Jakesuit? Yes please.
Id try to stick to the stories with heavier themes. Try to emulate the original tone as much as possible. Keep it light hearted. I love the hair cut scene from i think the episode skyhooks(maybe it was called the door)? Stuff like that. Not to just lean to much into the weird by grossing people out with a way to realistic shape shifting dog. To try and balance that out with equally heavy storytelling.

This show is my favourite TV show of all time for a reason. As it evolved, it revealed a surprising amount of nuance. The whacky random show suddenly showed its commentary on real life issues that was a lot of help for me and others. It tackled so much topics, its hard to name them all. Finn's arc from an immature crush he mistook for love, to a rash hormonal jump into a toxic relationship, to finally recognizing his faults, to developing meaningful relationships without needing to seek love. It touched on identity issues in some episodes; uncertain futures; dealing with trauma, guilt, PTSD; moral ambiguity; flaws in the structure of capitalism; terrible father figures; facing Alzheimer's; redemption from sin; even the nature of human life and endings; and so much more. And it does all this without ever sacrificing the idea of how fun life can be. I wish more people would recognize how great the writing can be, because there is a lot that can be learned from this show.

A quote from Guillermo del Toro in "The Art of Ooo":
"It is the rarest of tales that can be told with the ease of a child....Adventure Time is animated by incredible humanism. One that has its basis in the effortless bromance of Jake and Finn, yes, but one that also understands pathos, fragility and loss.....Contrary to Hollywood dictum the characters are the story and its structure is not dictated by a creaky three-act structure- it stays infuriatingly real by simply being in awe of the world and its characters, by being profoundly in love with it all."
"It embodies the angst and circumstance of the day-to-day and the aesthetic malleability of our culture while leaving us with the sense that we are watching a true classic in the making: a work that will endure,"
"Adventure Time has a depth of myth and uses it nimbly but to its full power. The throwaway nature of the series' cosmology, or genesis or back story is built upon a lore that is as solid as it gets and as perfect as any worthy creation in the fantasy genre."

It's amazing how Adventure Time manages to combine some of the most out-there elements--be it its characters, setting, lore, stories, or really anything else--and be one of the realest, most grounded shows in recent memory.
Just looking at the characters alone, you've got:
    - A teenage human adventurer who is one of only two known humans in the entire world (until they find more, living in a faux-Edenic society that survives purely off of fear and ignorance)
    - His brother, a stretchy mutant dog-alien hybrid brother who dates a rainbow unicorn from the crystal dimenion
    - A bit of hyper-intelligent anthropomorphic chewing gum
    - Her on-again/off-again vampiric cambion rockstar girlfriend
    - An ice wizard with a penchant for kidnapping royal ladies who used to be a world-reknowned archaeology until he got magic Alzheimer's from a crown
    - A talking gender-fluid GameBoy with possible dissociative personality disorder
    - A bit of fire (to quote Minerva)
    - And so many other characters that, at a glance, might seem wholly unbelievable.
The series is implied to take place in the ruins of the United Stated 1000 years after the world was razed by nuclear fire. The world itself appears to be a fantasy world dialed up to about 13 on the surface, but also features many futuristic sci-fi elements as well, and references to the modern (late noughties) world. Abraham Lincoln is literally ruling the entire planet of Mars, for cryin' out loud!
Yet, through the skill of the writers, artists, VAs, and remainder of the crew, the show presents all of these fantastical elements in a package that results in one of the most natural and immersive shows in many years, which tackles issues like identity, sexuality, gender, death, destiny (or lack thereof), a variety of family troubles, fear, change, and so many others, all done to a high degree of effectiveness and without resorting to analogues or stand-ins, sacrificing its overall quality (it brings it up, if anything), or coming off as pandering.

Thank you for covering one of my favorites. Would love to see a video about side characters. How they can be developed not by being in the spotlight but by one liners and hints? Or leaving us guessing and speculating but in a good way. And how they can help main characters develop or whatnot.

There's a book called *Enchiridion by Epictitus*, a small pamphlet of sorts. Reading it more or less frames the stoic undercurrents of this show, which is arguably far from a coincidence.

Greetings from Brazil! As a huuuge fan of the show, i've watched a whole bunch of videos talking about the many different and interesting themes of the show. But even still, your analysis covered on a theme that i surprisingly had never seen anyone tackling it before. It's funny how normally people would analyze more lore focused or impactful episodes, but you instead picked a very average episode of Adventure Time in my opinion. But after seeing the video, i found a whole lot of appreciation for it. You did my favorite Cartoon Network show and possibly one of my favorite pieces of media justice. Great video as always!

Adventure Time is just so special. Whenever I even think about the universe of that show, I get this weird feeling that’s a duality between being haunted and entranced by it. The vast scale and depth of the world can be scary as well as some of the surprisingly dark material within it. There has never been a fictional universe that draws me in quite like this one. I’m never gonna forget it.

As a 31 year old currently sucked back into rewatching the entire series after seeing random clips for weeks that seemed all too relatable, you did Adventure Time some true justice with this video. I stumbled across it after pausing midway through the "Jake The Dad" episode, and literally googled "adventure time is strange" and your video popped up... I think regardless of anyones views or past or anything, most of us can say we did not envision the world in the state it is currently while growing up. Adventure time does a great way of reflecting this on so many levels, and the creators journey with psychedelics and overcoming traumas of the world that we all see far too often these days, and usually is a function of the everlasting chaotic cycles of the lives we live now is a journey i can not recommend to people enough. It's for kids, its for adults, Adventure time will always stand as a true gem, and for me so will your video now. Thank you. 🙏

This is my favorite show of all time. Not because of the great funny/emotional writing but because it grew up with me. I don't remember much from my past because my memory is doinked. But I remember watching this show every week at 8:00 pm Mondays. It brings me back to my 7 y/o self that I can't really be anymore. And the fact that this show grew with me thickening the plotline as I got older was great. I'm not gonna lie when I was 11-12 I stopped watching the show why I couldn't tell you. This is to this day the greatest world build I've ever seen in animation, not really close. The land of oo had so much to explore without it feeling forced. It was a great ride and I'm not an emotional guy but rewatching it and seeing the finale made me tear up. Knowing this part of my life is over and I have to focus on school and being social makes me so... idk. It's hard to explain how much this show influenced me and I'll never know how much it really did. So Pendelton Ward thank you, to Adam Muto thank you for continuing the show, and to John Dimaggio, you voiced my favorite character of all time.

I love you're video and I love adventure time I love how Finn goes from a carefree dumb child to a depressed teen struggling to under to understand the world and its complicated relationships to a person who makes peace with not only themselves but their mistakes and it shows he's development from seeing evil as black and white to understanding there are grey lines and stories that change he's perspective.
    - Marceline who seemed like this cool edgy girl who doesn't care about anyone only to later realize that literally everyone she's ever loved abounded/disappointed her except her own mother.
    - Jake a dog who seems careless and fun but then we find out he over stresses and worries about about things on an unhealthy level and he deals with this by being as relaxed/carefree as he possibly can and just follows the river of life and goes along with it.
    - P.B who seemed like a well put together person who is perfect but we find out she's a dictator who tries to control and protect her people even if it means crossing the lines to the point of spying on them but grows and learns to be more understanding and okay with people's mistakes.
    - even Ice king went from a sick crazy evil guy to a miss understood and misjudged character with dementia who in his core just wants someone to love him because he loves and cares about people so much that it literally caused his own destruction.
and these are just 4 characters there's so many others who grew and changed and were misunderstood L.S.P, Lemongrab, Cinnamon bun, Lemon hope etc. even the Litch changed became a more understanding person the only person who didn't grow/change was B.M.O and even then it was on purpose because he was made to see the world through the eyes of a child filled with love, curiosity and imagination.
and quite a few people dont like the direction the show took with evolving its characters to be more serious but I for one and many others loved it. This show helped me through high school and depression and finding myself and made me be more understanding of people and their struggles it literally taught me not to judge a book by its cover(people by only what I knew).
Truly a masterpiece of a show, and I wish more people covered it.

adventure time is the best thing ever made. i love it w every ounce of my being. nothing will compare. i remember seeing the pilot right when it aired and it immediately stuck w me as a show made for me. my mom getting me the third season dvd in my Easter basket was one of the most life changing days of my life. ive said for the past 6 years that i could only watch adventure time for the rest of my life and be perfectly happy. i put on adventure time when im struggling to breathe through tears, when i feel hopeless, when im doing work, when im so mad im shaking, when im showering, when im feeling perfectly fine, and i always end up watching it on the best days of my life, like when i got my first kiss from my love, i watched season 3 that night. when i was 9, i caught the episode i remember you when it aired just by chance. man, when i tell you that it blew my mind is such an understatement. ive never seen ANYTHING like that and still never have. adventure time is unlike anything that ever existed or will exist, and i cant believe how lucky i am that little 6 year old me was laying down on the carpet just letting cartoon network run, and was able to catch slumber party panic when it first came out to the world.
