Icons: Oscar Niemeyer

Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012) was a pioneering Brazilian architect whose bold, curved modernist designs left an indelible mark on 20th-century architecture. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Niemeyer's unique style emerged from a blend of influences, including Brazilian colonial architecture, the reinforced concrete techniques pioneered by his mentor Auguste Perret, and the modernist principles of Le Corbusier.
After studying at the National School of Fine Arts in Rio, Niemeyer collaborated with Swiss architect Lucio Costa on the design of Brazil's modernist new capital city, Brasília, in 1956. His civic and government buildings there, featuring soaring reinforced concrete forms, put his sinuous and sculptural aesthetic on the world stage.
Niemeyer's architecture is characterised by free-flowing curves, rounded and organic shapes, and a sense of weightlessness and movement. His designs play with light and shadow, integrated art elements, and harmonise buildings with their natural surroundings. From Brasília's Cathedral to the UN Headquarters Serpentine Gallery in New York, his structures are monumental yet sensual, combining form and function.
