Hi Lindsay, I would agree that not a lot of land is needed to grow a good amount of food. I also agree that it is far better to start small and gradually add crops and animals rather than getting burned out, exhausted and broke. Mistakes are a part of learning. We live on 25 acres of sagebrush and rocks. Our main reason for buying that amount of land was for quiet and privacy. We recently were able to afford to have the land properly fenced. We have slowly made improvements and increased our garden space over the 29 years of living here. Taking raw rocky land and turning it into a fertile garden space takes a lot of time and effort. The most important thing I have learned is to plant the garden as close to the house as possible. Out of sight, out of mind is so true. I would say I am not a homesteader but enjoy experimenting. each year. This year I added celery, sunflowers, and some herbs. The most amusing experiment was to plant a bed of garbanzo beans. I tried to sprout garbanzos for the chickens and they just molded, so I rinsed them off and planted them having no idea if they would grow. They are producing which makes me laugh. I am still amazed when seeds turn into plants that produce food. The best part of gardening is constant learning. Thanks for the video.

The added privacy and peace of having a larger plot of land is always a nice benefit.
Congrats on getting it all fenced in and on the progress you have made with turning it into a more fertile landscape.
Doing garden experiments are really fun for me. I throughly enjoy planting new varieties of crops just so I can watch how they grow, produce, and obviously taste in comparison to the more common types. There is always just something so fascinating about planting a tiny seed and it turning into a monstrously huge plant. It feels like magic lol

Hey! This is so true! For the last 7 years we were also in a suburban property of just over a quarter acre, and like you also grew an hell of a lot on that small block, we also had chooks, guinea pigs, quails and in 2022 I bought a Nigerian Dwarf doe in milk with her kids for home dairy.... We absolutely fell in love and started looking for land to have more goats lol. We are now on 10 acres, and it's lovely, but I would love to have more wooded area, I absolutely agree that trying to garden a larger area is not easier, especially when trying to be a full time mum of 6 kids, with 2 toddlers at home, starting again is very hard. But you are right, we don't need 100 apple trees 😂 thank you for reminding me!!! I look forward to watching more of your videos!

@@Permaculturegoats I loved reading your comment! There is something so simple about doing this all on a very compact lot. It's almost romantic to look back on how much you could do and how much efficiency could be packed in. Looking back, I'm more than grateful for starting in such a small space

Just my thoughts, which could be helpful or worthless.😂 I like it when you ask your followers specific questions. If you would not have asked how many acres do you have, I would not have commented. I believe interacting with you from answering questions might increase responses and possibly increase viewers. I was a teacher forever and my best class experiences were when the students and I exchanged questions , knowledge and ideas.

Great points. More is definitely not always better. Although I do like the idea of having enough land to lease some pasture for a few steer every year to help pay the taxes. 👍👍

    7 years offgrid , on 5 acers .
I only use about half an acer around my cabin , I would love to have 100 acers , but I have what I need , paid for is a huge advantage.

Isn't it amazing how little of space is needed to grow a large portion of food? I think it'd be incredible to have a ton of acreage to create your own little paradise on this planet :)

    Great video as usual.
You talk about saving your own seeds on one video can you explain or demonstrate, also next season I want to start in ground planting. We need to know what I can do before fall so I can get ready and on a budget.

As the season progresses, I'll make sure to film a few videos on saving different types of seeds :)
I'm not sure if you've seen my Playlist called How To Start A Garden. I documented the whole process of how I started the in ground garden here last year and I also discuss gardening tips and share my thoughts on where to put a new garden

Oh how much land do I have.
My wife and I , along w our two kids two dogs, live in the back/top half of a duplex the other half is an antiques store right in the heart of downtown smalltown ... And I'm this close to just getting either some quail or pigeons and doing what I can on our back patio where there really isn't even room to garden, but I keep telling myself in going to start outlaw gardening whenever I can.
Anyway Lindsay I hope you feel better.

@horseblinderson4747 from my understanding, if you get coturnix quail, they are considered an exotic bird since they are originally from Japan. I've known of someone who registered a couple of goats as an emotional support animal to get around a home owners association lol. For a small patio, you could look into doing a small, vertical hydroponics set up
