    This is Coach Van Tassel from My Football Mentor. Intermediate to longer throws usually involve a single or double hitch step in your five step drop. The step into your throw combined with good hip and shoulder rotation will increase the distance on your throws. If you are not taking a hitch step, as some throws are five steps and throw only, make sure you are getting the rotation I spoke of and have a good follow through with your arm.

  • @Myfootballmentor
    @Myfootballmentor  Před 11 lety +1

    Hi Aahan, If the ball is rotating slowly that means that you are shot putting the ball too much. The ball must roll off of your fingers from your pinkie to your index finger with the index finger being the last finger to leave the ball. the index finger must be pointing towards where you are throwing and the thumb should be down.

  • @johnzajac9849

    As the ball begins to come forward in the motion, concentrating on keeping the nose of the ball pointed forward is a key to effective throwing.

The reason I'm contacting you is I'm noticing at the youth level most kids have some difficulty in catching the ball. As result of that my son will hesitate his throw. What do u suggest to improve has timing. Can u recommend a drill that will train him to trust what he see's and to release to ball faster ?

  • @Myfootballmentor
    @Myfootballmentor  Před 11 lety +2

    It does. Sometimes it can be your throwing mechanics that are off. Make sure you've got a correct grip on the ball, and that you're planting your feet correctly before you throw. Sometimes the problem is in your legs, your sternum, and not your hands or arms.

    This is Coach Van Tassel from My Football Mentor. To reply to your post about your arm becoming sore after throwing for a long time, make sure you are warming up properly before you throw and be sure to ice your arm down after throwing for long periods. Any QB can get a sore arm if they throw for a long time. Remember to apply appropriate shoulder rotation when you throw so you are not using all arm. I would suggest buying our videos in order to see what's involved with throwing properly.

  • @Myfootballmentor
    @Myfootballmentor  Před 11 lety

    Hi Aahan, it's difficult to give you advice as we haven't seen video of your throwing mechanics. Our training videos are inexpensive so I'd start there. Also pay attention to how you grip the ball, be sure there is an air gap/space between ball and your palm.

  • @Myfootballmentor
    @Myfootballmentor  Před 11 lety

    It's very difficult to say what you are doing wrong by the description you give of "it looks as if I am throwing a dart". Throwing a football starts with the feet, goes to the hips, then the shoulders and lastly the arm. I would suggest purchasing our QB videos as they are great teaching tools. If you are throwing the football like a dart you most likely do not have your feet set correctly as that will diminish all the other mechanics I just mentioned. Also, u can read r blog on "The 7 Eyes"

    • @slickfrictionless
      @slickfrictionless Před 9 lety

      MrKeepnit100 The most important part of throwing a slant route is to have the QB's drop match the route. I would suggest getting coach Cunerty's QB videos at www.myfootballmentor.com as he covers all of those types of mechanics and specifics. There are many variables to throwing a slant route including the type of coverage when running the route...first window read, second window read, and so on...too many to give a simple explanation for.

  • @slickfrictionless
    @slickfrictionless Před 11 lety

    Taylormadeent1, your question didn't get "blown off" as we try to get to all of them if possible but sometimes that is difficult. Tips for a lefty are no different than how you do everything as a right handed thrower.
    Coach Van Tassel

  • @brasidas7
    @brasidas7 Před 12 lety

    So, out of the three types, which is the most preferable form? I personally do not like launcher type as that form didn't have enough accuracy - maybe that's me but that's how I always felt. I think I'm pretty close to the puncher type - if at all, I was taught that the throwing motion has to be compact for various reasons.

  • @slickfrictionless
    @slickfrictionless Před 11 lety

    Make sure you are not flat handing the ball. In other words, make sure there is a gap between your palm and the ball. This will make sure the ball leaves your hand with the tip of the ball angled properly. See if that helps.

  • @thomasmac3081
    @thomasmac3081 Před 7 lety

    The foot is also important your foot facing away from where you throw should drag or skip. And end at a point with your toes at the ground

  • @slickfrictionless
    @slickfrictionless Před 11 lety

    SparkyXP3, arm strength really is dictated by rotation of the hips to the shoulders. The rotational force you create with the hips and the shoulders increases velocity on your throws. As far as actual arm strength exercises, use cables in your gym by simulating a throwing motion. It doesn't require a lot of weight and do three sets of 20 repetitions twice a week.
    Coach Van Tassel

  • @Myfootballmentor
    @Myfootballmentor  Před 11 lety

    You will find that throwing the football with less velocity and more accuracy will de-emphasize your grip. If you are having difficulty gripping the football because of the size of your hands don't be afraid to try gloves. Payton Manning did this because he was having trouble gripping the football in cold weather due to a weaker grip caused by his neck injury.

    When I throw the ball I get a great spiral, but the ball often rotates about 30 degrees on a lateral plane while traveling to the intended target. In every other fashion the ball travels as it should, but usually the tip of the football starts out slightly to the left of the receiver and ends up pointing slightly to his right. What could be causing this?

      @imateapot51 Před 3 lety

      Since nobody replied - if you are throwing a perfect spiral you are doing things right. If your shoulder is sore you threw too many. Not everybody has the same shoulder structure. Some are going to be more prone to impingement. When I had shoulder surgery for inflamed bursa sacks, bursitis, the doctor also shaved away some of my glenoid cavity to give my arm more clearance.

    I recently went from DL, (220) to De, and since my knee blew out last season I have been working on QB, Now. (185) 6'3 I can run, deal out big hits and run linebackers over. But, My throwing.... I do perfect throws, then I do bad ones I cant be consistent. and Lots of time, its because I release the ball slightly to easy and I know I am, How do I avoid that???

    Anybody have any ideas on how I could be a quarterback for my youth football team.

    First of all you want to make sure you are not over-gripping the football or using a "death grip" as Coach Cunerty mentions. You don't have to grip the ball as tightly as you might think in order to throw it properly. Also, take something off of your throws. Don't try and throw the football too hard. Bill Walsh use to say that it's not how hard you throw but how accurately. It's much more difficult to throw accurately when you try and throw too hard.
