  • The heroin epidemic has spread into the suburban landscapes of America and has created something just as dangerous as the lives it takes, its complete denial.
    Tim Ryan struggled with addiction for 30 years, being incarcerated for 7 years for drug-related convictions, overdosing 7 times, and being announced clinically dead 3 times. He lost his 20 year old son in 2014 to heroin and has attended 96 funerals since then. Painfully aware of the realities of drug addiction, Tim is now a recovering heroin addict and founder of the A Man in Recovery Foundation, working to expose the truth about addiction and work within communities to create solutions to drug addiction and instill the messages of hope and recovery.
    Tim has been featured in over 50 publications, from the front page of the Chicago Tribute to Newsweek, The Steve Harvey Show, and Dr. Drew. He has also assisted CNN on a series about heroin in our community airing Fall 2016.
    This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

      After a person has been chasing not ghost not a high. Chasing feeling normal 15 teen to 20 years the brain has rewired itself and by this time society has rewired its thinking about u, love makes people want to do better and that being so powerful even love isn't enough.. but it's a he'll of a start!

    The maddening thing about life is that some problems have no solution, you can't convince an addict to get clean, they have to want it for themselves, you can't stop the drug problem with prohibition, and you won't stop it with legalization. Education is all you can do to minimize the damage. Having a good family is the biggest help, but that comes down to luck.

      Totally agree except that I do think there is a solution, but most everyone ignores it The solution is to address and heal the pain that underlies the addiction. The solution is to realize that substance addictions are no different than the addictions the rest of us have except that they are deadly. How many of us eat too much or people please or look at our phone all day? We all have unmet needs, unhealed wounds, and pain we are running from. Focus on healing that pain will make the addiction unnecessary.

    • @bellabear653
      @bellabear653 Před 2 lety +1

      If things are legal it keeps the addict alive long enough to come out the other side. No drug was ever made safer when it's left to criminals to control quality.

  • @EveningTV
    @EveningTV Před 3 lety +5

    This guy is too focused on the supply side of addiction.. The solution is in reducing or eliminating the demand. We need to understand and heal why are we using? What is the addiction doing for the person? This is the reason rehab fails nearly everyone is that they focus on the addiction not the core problem that led to it, and they do not treat trauma despite many available low cost treatment options. My son died of an accidental overdose just a few months before this video was posted. We weren't in denial. He didn't hide it from us. We didn't blame the dealers. Our mistake was believing help was available in treatment. He is wrong about the number of wonderful programs out there. In reality there is one program available in 95% of the treatment centers and most people never hear about anything else. Of course that is most of what he listed off which is all associated with 12 step philosophy originated with AA over 80 years ago, and that program has not changed or been updated at all despite the fact that it fails far more people than it helps. One of the biggest problems with 12 steps and most available treatment is that it ignores trauma. We need to heal the core reason the person started using in the first place. "Don't ask why the addiction, ask why the pain," ~ Dr.Gabor Mate

    In athletics I have dozens of friends that get injured. There doctor give them usually a 30 day supply of pain meds. He’s the kicker... none of them have a addiction problem. Years later, there lives change and can’t compete or train. But not addicts. The “take a opioid and your a addict!” Line isn’t the truth and doctors aren’t the problem. Did you ever think that because it’s illegal it makes it cool to kids?

    Since we all know the war on drugs is about money, why don't we stop it? For every arrest police make their budget is bigger. For every conviction, prisons get bigger budgets, judges, and prosecutors get kickbacks. The all mighty dollar keeps us sick, and the largest prison population in the history of the world, by far. So if the drug problem was taken out of law enforcements hands, we'd get better. Ask yourself what you want, huge warehoues for people, with rich owners, sheriffs, and lawyers, or a healthy population?

    No matter who your GOD is, no matter what color you are, what country you live in, what financial class you are from, no matter what your race is, no matter what your profession is.....when it comes to drugs, follow the money. There is money in the trafficking, money in the distribution, money in privately owned prisons, there is money in the rehabs, and so on....so when you follow the money and find that answer, then there is a good start. Until then, love to all, in every country, every race and religion.

    Whilst I sympathise with this guy's tragedy and respect his passion/drive, many of the things he is saying are wrong. Technology isn't responsible for people taking drugs, very few addicts rely on the dark net for supply and there has and will always be a means of supply. Also, not everybody will get addicted from taking opioid for an extended period of time, most people will not (despite developing physical dependence). To become addicted you typically need some combination of genetic susceptibility, and an underlying mental health issue (such as anxiety or depression). Addiction comes from individuals self medicating not from excessive pleasure seeking. In order to make progress, it is the persons need for these drugs (i.e. the mental health issues) that needs to be addressed.

      James Buckley did you know you can buy Xanax online? Yeah, very easily. It's all the rage on college campuses. You need to get with it. People are buying from the dark web. They buy things like u4770 which was a research chemical. Look it up.

    • @valerieashcraft1615
      @valerieashcraft1615 Před 6 lety +3

      Actually he did not say that technology was responsible for people taking drug, he also did not say that people rely on the dark net to buy their drugs. He did say that people can find it on the internet. That is very true. Also statistics say that 75% of people who take opioids over an extended period of time will become addicted. Also physical dependence is part of addiction. You do not need to have some genetic history. Physical Dependence, tolerance, and withdrawal are the three things that defines addiction. Many addicts especially opioid addicts start from an injury or illness! Will power has nothing to do with addiction. Addiction changes the pleasure pathways in the brain.

    This is a great impression of my father. But he’s also correct about a lot. But what do you say to the people who live in chronic pain that can’t get the medications anymore. You all did a great job of making red tape and leaving people in pain. The people your talking about don’t get there drugs from a doctor. All this does is cause red tape for the wrong people. Some people commit suicide from pain.

    • @kurtilein3
      @kurtilein3 Před 6 lety

      The people who need it should get it. Some doctors over-prescibe, while others let pain patients suffer by underprescribing it. The main problem is systemic stupidity in the USA.

  • @eb7446
    @eb7446 Před 6 lety +1

    What is called "middle class" is often actually working class in the UK. In the UK middle class means affluent - in the US it basically means not in poverty. But generally speaking these ordinary people living in ordinary places turn to drugs due to worsening prospects. Especially the young who likely didn't get prescriptions for pain - but from relatives or dealers for psychological relief. I'd say it was systemic issue in many ways.

    When I had wisdom teeth removed or minor surgery, I NEVER had a doctor give me a 30 day supply or a high dose of narcotics. I was given maybe 10 pain pills intended to last 3-4 days after my wisdom teeth were pulled, and after 2 days, I didn't need anymore pain management beyond ibuprofen. That bottle of 6 or so remaining pills stayed in my medicine cabinet for maybe 8 years after that. I don't understand the desire that causes people to seek drugs that are not medically necessary. I've never had the desire to "get high". Unlike many of my peers at 16, I wasn't trying to get access to alcohol or drugs; I was too focused on school and my future to have time for that stuff. It seemed like they were seeking beer and so forth because having access to something they LEGALLY should not have had access to made them cool and because their parents didn't seem to care or know they were doing.

    The reason why its hard to defeat addiction is because only an addict can talk to an addict. Why do you think AA and NA is basically ran by addicts that have been clean for while. Because they know how it is to be an addict.
    If an addict vents to a non addict about addiction, the non addict will have no clue how they feel. Therefore, they will not have the correct answer, Or any answer at all. Even if they really genuinely wanted to help.
    And the problem with addicts speaking to addicts is that everybody has their own way they think they can beat the addiction. Thats the problem in a nutshell. Any solution will be theory, but You have to master self and discipline while and after detox to survive. And get a new set of friends.

    If cannabis is a gateway drug for someone, it's becouse of the system that made certain drugs illegal, therefore you are getting in illegal terratory of drugs, starting with cannabis in most countries .... IF ALL DRUGS WERE LEGAL (like they were till 60s), THERE WOLUD BE NO "GATEWAY" DRUG, and much less criminal activity related to drugs, if any. Drugs would be pure and the result of that is less addiction and deaths related to overdoses. That's just my opinion.

      When it comes to their TECHNOLOGY, children have no right to privacy. As regards to Tim, or anyone else being a failed parent, there is only so much one can do as a parent. Sometimes we do our best, and the child still does not turn out. There is a certain element of luck in how a child turns out in addition to upbringing. I have 3 children, and all 3 appear to be on the right track. However, nothing should be taken for granted.

    I think that the problem is even deeper than this. Here in America, we have lost our ideals. It's no small co-incidence that the counties in places like Ohio that overwhelmingly voted for Donald Trump were also the counties that had the highest rates of opioid addiction. We don't have an opioid crisis. We have a crisis of faith in ourselves.

    Alcohol is a gateway drug. However, MJ should not be taken lightly. Most people who use marijuana may not go on to use other drugs. However, EVERYONE I have spoke with who has used other drugs has used marijuana. My proof ? Over 20 years in the addiction field, including almost a decade in both male and female correctional facilities. Is the legalization of marijuana a good thing for society? History will have the final vote. History ALWAYS has the final vote!!

      Tina BeanAH I don't plan on watching the whole video, but I do know that what this man is saying is from heart. He's from my town, Naperville, and he started off being the 3rd highest paid man in his company. He had a beautiful house, a wife, and three sons. He ended up pulling one of his sons into addiction, and unfortunately, his son died. I don't know, maybe through his public speaking, he's trying to compensate for not being able to save his son, but I do know that he helps people DAILY. I personally think he's very qualified, if you ask me.

I will have to rewatch it so I can at least explain where I was coming from, I should have done so in the first place

To this day he is 3 years free from drugs and 3 years out of jail. And the 97 funerals he visited went up way higher today. In prison he got lucky to be in one of the 2 prisons in illinois with a drug addiction program.
