  • Here is an off-air recording from BBC One on Friday 5 September 1997 - the day before the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales. The news is preceded by a trailer for a new series of Omnibus, and then Her Majesty the Queen gives a live tribute to Diana.
The news, presented by Anna Ford and Diana Madill, is dominated by the Diana story and the return of the Royal family to London to meet the crowds. John Simpson covers that story, while Clarence Mitchell reports from outside Buckingham Palace. Jennie Bond comments as BBC Court Correspondent. More details of Diana's last day are released by the Paris Ritz. Ben Brown gives the story of those sleeping on the streets to ensure they can see the funeral.

8:00 - Prince Harry looks totally lost here. Just look at how he watches his brother and father go over to the crows first, before he decides to join them. You can see how horrible this was for him, but his older brother and father seemed a bit better at handling it than he was, as he was still very young.

Observant of you, I never noticed it at all, good to be keen eyed and notice human feelings and emotions like that. I wonder what Charles was thinking, can’t mention the rest as could be libelist.

@@jacksugden8190 You don't need to be observant, it plainly shows in his eyes. My father died when I was ten years old. I know how Harry felt. I went into a sort of shock when my dad died. For two days I never cried, just watched the TV. Then after the funeral service at the burial I burst into tears when they lowered by dad's coffin into the grave. Like a pressure cooker suddenly released. 1995 is when my dad died, it never leaves you.

I see, my father died in 1981, he was young at 64, got 11 days and I shall be his age, my mother died in 2005, she was 79, and why make a show in public if his mother’s death, why not grieve in private?.

It's a noteworthy coincidence that Diana's funeral on 6th September 1997 took place exactly 25 years to the day before the Queen's final public appearance at Balmoral.

Anna Ford had 13 years on me, being born in 1943, she was always well turned out with good diction, and no sign of Megan Markle just yet in this breaking news, all comes out in the wash in later life.

News coverage from September 1997 says it was on "all the main British television and radio channels" - which implies that some of the specialist ones did not take it.
