I take half of it in another jar, mix it with olive oil and honey. Then I do the same to the rest of it and mix it all together. It gives the masque a more creamy texture and adds moisture. Plus it gets rid of the chalky feeling. I love it!!
I know this is late; but if u have some left over in a container that u mixed the oil and honey in is it good to still use it for the next to u was ur hair so u won't throw it away? I'm new at this because I'm transitioning to natural
i Tried this for the first time a few days ago, I didnt like the way it felt at first becuse of the way it felt but then after i washed it out i loved it. My hair felt amazing after and i was nervous since i recently colored my hair (maybe a month or two) but it did great and my hair was nice and curly and moist. I used the cantu coconut curls after AMAZEBALLS!!!!!
I've only used it for styling my two strand twists. I've wet my twists a little, then applied the Shea Moisture and my hair loves it. Today, I just applied to my completely dry twists and my hair loves it. My twists are so soft & hydrated and I have very coarse, tight, kinky hair!
You should try One and Only's Argan Oil Hydrating Mask! I love that product and I have 3 different curls patterns in my hair and I'm color treated. I'm trying different deep condtioners also to see if one can top the one I love.
I have used this during my transition and now after 15 months I will not use anything else as a deep conditioner and I have explored others. Along with the shampoo---this is good stuff!
I use this as a leave in (but it was only my first time using it) & I turned some of my damaged bleached ends into more of a curl! I was so excited!! Definitely is a little to thick but I love what it did :) today I will try it as a leave in
Hey Mel, I use this and its a staple. If you want slip use it on wet dripping hair that hasn't been towel dried. This will also leave hair more moisturized. I also use it when I re moisturize as my cream, you can adjust the amount and it won't be too heavy. Keep in mind slip in a masque is a plus.
An amazing way to use it is to detangle with your oil (I use coconut for this step) then apply the mask over it, let it sit for at least 30 mins and rinse...it feels so much better without the chalky feel and the oil helps with the slip issue

I love this product, I use it on freshly shampooed hair (with the shea moisture yucca and baobab shampoo) on damp hair, then I leave it on overnight with a shower cap and a head scarf over it. In the morning I rinse with cool water and my hair feels so soft and fluffy. I then apply my leave in conditioner, coconut oil and shea butter, talk about soft! Like a lot of other naturals, I started using this as a leave in and I love it!! My hair doesn't have the white flakes like the Curl Enhancing Smoothie created when I used it like a leave in. I haven't used this as a deep conditioner yet.

I absolutely love it for twisting on dry, stretched hair, but for a deep conditioner, I hated it! I did not like how it made my hair feel after I rinsed it out. It was not especially soft or shiny, but when I used it for twists on dry hair, my hair was soft,shiny and frizz free. I did mini twists, and the shine and moisturization lasted 3 days and then I refreshed it.
My hair loves this product! It's my staple DC! Although I do agree with that weird feeling has you rinse the product out of your hair but it leaves my hair moisturized and brings my curls to life.

I tried it and love it. It's a grail for me. I deep condition overnight with it by lightly spritzing my hair with water and wearing a cap all night. When I rinse it, my hair is soft. I also use it as a leave in under my curl enhancing smoothie, but I just use about a quarter size amount n four sections of my hair and then put on an oil and my hair is soft. Love it! :-)

I have a container, but I am using the Shea Moisture yucca & Baobab Anti-breakage masque and its really great!! I love the definition I get and it worked well for me to detangle with ( which I wasn't looking for). I also love the smell and the thickness. I need to use my Raw Shea butter deep treatment masque soon...BTW I am in LOVE with SheaMoisture products!!!

It smells like frankincense and myrrh. I actually use this as a styler. It works great for setting twistouts. I may try it as a DC one day. Thanks for the video Mel!
The chalky feeling is probably because it is literally a raw shea butter. But since you have thick curly hair you should try the shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie. I haven't heard any complaints, so good luck! :)
glad you like it enough. i love this product!! i love it as a DC overnight, but mostly as a styler, when i do wash and goes with it, i use it alone, and i get fab hair every time!!! :) yeah not much slip. give it a go as a styler, don't apply too much. i am going to find the video i did on how i apply it, and make it public so you can have a look, or i will add it here as a VR. x
Hey Melshary! Yea I don't love it as a DC, but I do mix it with the shea moisture hibiscus curl enhancing smoothie (about 1/2 & 1/2) and love it that way as a leave in/styler! Also, have you tried As I Am coconut co-wash? I love it! I like their DC too, but it's a little pricey @ about $15 for 8 oz. Oh! My absolute FAVORITE DC is komaza care's olive moisture mask, it left my hair feeling amazing, and @ 16oz for $16, I feel it's at a good price point.
One of the few DCs that I can just wash and go. A lttle oil for shine, but the feel of the hair AFTERWARDS is awesome. While it's in it feels almost like a clay mixture...smells like it too. But I like it for after color deep conditioning.
I get that same chalky feeling, like there is powder in my hair when I washed it out. My hair is moisturized but there is too much protein in there for me so I gave it to my mom. She's color treated so I think she appreciates its more.
@TheRubyCheetah slip is when u apply a product to your hair and u can easily detangle your hair and it adds instant softness ie you can slip your fingers easily throughout
I know your exact reaction! My curls looked great afterwards but it felt so weird and... rubbery when I was washing it out. The first time I did it I had it in my hair for an hour. Washed it out and conditioned my hair again (because I was paranoid that it left my hair dry) and when I did all that it looked great. It's just a weird feeling when you wash it out. P.S. Your curls are awesome and luxurious!
That stuff made my hair feel gross and coated. The Shea Moisture Purification Masque is the love of my life! It moisturizes and clarifies at the same (damn) time.

When I use the masque, I spike it with other oils and some conditioners that I have in the house or something. I have only used it once as a DC with just that and nothing else and I wasn't wowed by it. But, when I use it as a base in my DC, then I'm wowed because it works well with other oils and DC products.
I've yet to try this product because I already have a holy grail moisturizing deep conditioner. However, I've tried the "cult favorite" curl enhancing smoothie and HATED it for styling so I now I'm using it as a DC and it's working out ok. Will not repurchase though. :)
I find that it works best for me on dry clean hair with a follow up of castor oil. It gives me great slip as well as make my hair grow faster. The first product that I have found that works for my 3c/4a/4b hair with low porosity that never seems to hold moisture.
I had the same experience. I HATED this on my hair. It was one of those products that only works ok with something else. Just ok. I didn't use any Shea Moisture products for months after that, lol. The Curl Enhancing Smoothie is bomb though, so I'm glad I tried a different line in their arsenal.
I love this deep treatment masque! For me it leaves my hair nice and soft, just what I hope for in a deep treatment, It's way to heavy for me to use as a leave in, it is the heavy version of the restorative conditioner, which I do us as a leave in.

I went through two jars of that masque before I found something better. It just doesn't have much slip. It wasn't BAD per se but wasn't great either. I mixed it with olive oil to finish it.
I've tried it and like you did not like because I need more slip. I'm not too crazy about any of the shea moisture products. I will say that I use the masque for my braid out and twist outs as many others do.

Yes it feels like it doesn't rinse out completely. I ended up using shampoo after rinsing this out even though I washed my hair before applying it. I'm trying it again but I will just rinse it and style and see what happens.
I bought this yesterday because I would always hear great things about this line. Loved the shampoo. Hated that masque. My hair didn't absorb it and I got no slip and it also caused tangling. Going back to walmart to return it :-(
I forgot to say that I don't use a ton on my hair overnight, just enough to coat my hair and the water is just enough to damped my hair but not drip. When. Wake up, my hair is not soaking wet either. Also, this product is great Nader the ecostyler gel for wash and gos because you won't get the "crunch" that comes with using a gel. :-)
Hi, I love your videos btw... I found that the SheaMoisture Deep Treatment Masque works better for my 4 type hair as a moisturizer and I use it for my two-strand twists. I do not like how it feels as a deep conditioner alone. I have to mix it with an oil or another conditioner for me to be able to work with it. Thanks for the great vid tho!!
This did NOTHING for my hair when I bought it, even when I mixed it with oils and other products. Such a disappointment. But I'm glad it was a decent product for you :).

This is my FAVE DC. I use it on dry hair BEFORE my wash. I will never say that I won't try another brand BUT this is my holy grail.

It's my staple "get it on the ground" DC. I only use it as a DC because I think it's too heavy for me as a leave in/styler. Glad you like it though.
Good review! I didn't like this product as a DC, but I love it as a leave in! Especially when I do a twist out & don't want alot of shrinkage.

Nice review. I've used it and it did nothing but sit on top of my hair. The Anti-Breakage Masque worked better for me.
Oh never mind, you answered my question. I left it in, it wasn't too thick for me being the fact that my hair is so course & tightly coiled.
Works great as a DC for me. Also works well with twist outs and braid outs

try it with olive oil. Thats the only way it worked for me.

According to a representative from Shea Moisture, u get the best/full benefits from it by adding EVOO to it.

This conditioner is best used under a steamer on dry dirty hair prepoo. If u want slip try Aussie moist or V05 moisture milks conditioner.

I love shea moisture line the only thing I rinse out is the shampoo! I use JBCO when doing the lock method and seal with this masque!

I liked this product. I found it after looking for a good conditioner after trying mixed chicks and twisted sister which did not work for me.
