I once spent 22 hours total waiting to get unloaded , that was my last day a reefer trucker. Flatbed and tanker work is way better.

I’ve been a A truck driver for 45 years it’s a job that I have loved and hated. It is a job that is normally thankless as he said at one time people respect to Truckers now you get very little of that, but there is something to be said about delivering the load successfully and getting onto the next. It can be a lonely life but it can also be an exciting non-boring life I have made great money in the trucking business and I am also bit poor. I can honestly say I have got to see some of the most beautiful things North America hast offer. Now when I look back I would say without a doubt I would do it again. Mostly because of truck drivers they are a different breed and I am proud to call myself one of them. It is not an easy job and it takes you from the ones that you love but it is one of the most important jobs on the planet
I was born & raised in it myself. 19 yrs of truck driving school (learning from my dad), did a hitch in the military, then followed in his footsteps for over 25+ yrs, then a low back injury ended it all! These "steering wheel holders" of nowuhdays are NOWHERE NEAR the truckers we all were, & thats the difference between us & them! Besides my 8 year stint in the Marine Corps , flatbed trucking has been my favorite thing I did for money. I really enjoyed it. It's not for every one. Suited me just fine cause I'm not like anyone lol

NO! 2 hours isn't the norm., for the time it takes to load or unload a truck. It does depend on where you go. At smaller places, the norm maybe 2 hours, but at Walmarts and grocery warehouses the norm is 8-10 hours to load or unload

Depends on location. There is certain place literally took 2 hours to load or unload. My longest wait was 7 hours. Distribution center typically wait between 4-6 hours. I work for companies that dedicated to Tyson

As a former driver (2005-2017) on American highways, this report is accurate. I drove 1.2 million miles without a major accident. I eventually decided it was not for me, and I went on to be a 'home services' contractor and did things to people's homes that they did not want to do themselves. It's a hard industry to leave, which is often why you see guys driving until they retire or die. Imagine yourself becoming a 'man out of time' and seeing over a 10 year period your country decaying around you. If you stop driving, everyone calls you an 'old man' and incapable of understanding contemporary social or political issues. How insulting. To have served so well, and then to be called a 'nobody' by someone elses asshole children.
Now do the one for veterans that ALSO went into trucking, it's literally like living "The Forever War" in real time
Been an OTR Trucker for 25 years and I will say you cannot learn anything about trucking unless you actually spend time on the road.
The times have changed used to be truckers were respected; now not so much, used to be people gave truckers room, now they speed past and hit their brakes (going for an insurance claim; real shit that happens) and people just plain cutting off truckers.
This not to say that truckers are blameless; I have seen truckers do some stupid stuff no doubt; from speeding, to in the old days, running 3 or more logbooks (old school truckers know what I'm talking about) to not having control going down a mountain and a huge part of the issue is the training the new driver gets BEFORE they ever go out with a trainer.
Then there is the Government(s) both State and Federal that make trucking a serious pain in the ass with the laws the politician's pass; I have noticed the laws do not apply to pick-ups pulling trailers or to motorhomes that also pull trailers.
I could go on and on but this is a good stopping point.
You should have seen the trash Ohio had posted on their overhead highway info signs last night.

I’m from englewood in Chicago il best decision I’ve ever made was trucking.I can take care of my children and plan for the future as well with them and it definitely kept me out of trouble and helped me move up a tax bracket I love what I do it’s hard at first but with proper discipline it’s worth it!!

I've spent half of my life as a truck driver. I graduated truck driving school just before my 22nd birthday in 2001. This video is correct, but very incomplete.
To start with, you must go to a 150 driving school to get your license for apx $10k, with a very few exceptions which results in you starting your career working for a horrible huge company as essentially an endentured servant for 1 year of sheer he'll for virtually no money. You miss holidays, birthdays, social events, and etc. Eventually, your friends forget all about you and speak of you in past tense, your wife becomes someone you visit for 3 days a month and speek to on the phone for half an hour a day. You will inevitably be a thousand miles away when you get a call that one of your parents is dieing and you should rush home immediately only to call your dispatcher and be told, "We don't have a load going that way." "We can get you to Atlanta in about five days. Maybe you can rent a car or something from there.". You'll find yourself trying to sleep at night next to a refrigerated trailer that's louder than a Harley Davidson with no exhaust revving all night while lying there wondering why the hell you put yourself through this to pay for a mortgage on a house you don't live in and to make the payment on a car you don't drive, but both of which you need to spend two days fixing when you get home for your three days this month. Then, if you're especially unlucky, your wife tells you that she's 3 months pregnant and you are elated, then start doing the math and realize you weren't home at all three months ago. You manage to get a few hours of sleep, then get up I'm the middle of the night to drive for 11 hours through a snowstorm up and down terrifying mountains and get randomly pulled over and harassed by state troopers for a "DOT inspection", where said idiot cop that has knever driven a truck in his life, decides to make a big deal about how you don't Cary extra fuses and notes it on your inspection, destroying your CVSA score and putting your career in jeopardy even though your truck doesn't have fuses, but instead circuit breaker style fuses that you can just reset, then you get to the shipper after spending 30 minutes at the side of the road with the idiot co, 30 minutes on the phone with your company's safety department and another 30 minutes qt a truckstop trying to fax a copy of the inspection to your company at $2 per page which you can't afford to spend and you get to the shipper 30 minutes late only to be told "you'll have to call dispatch and be rescheduled for tomorrow", they don't allow overnight parking of course, so you'll have to drive to the ridiculously small pilot truck stop and pay another $15 you don't have for a "reserved" spot and another $15 for a shower and maybe $5 more for 2 beers you can hug in the shower, if that idiot cop doesn't see you, just so you can sleep with the noise of the damned refrigerated trailers parked next to you. Then repeat it all over again like Groundhogs Day for 20 years. That's what it's really like to drive a truck. All in all, I wish I'd knever started driving because no one will ever hire me to do anything else now except drive. Once you start climb in and crank the truck for the first time your a prisoner of the highway hated by all and a nuisance to be treated like an ATM and disrespected by almost everyone.
The reality of trucking that nobody talks about,very nicely stated sir. I lasted 12 months and came to much the same conclusion.

I’m in IT but have always appreciated the work Truckers do. They work way harder honestly than I do.
Don't pat Walmart on the back too much about paying their drivers well. Walmart treats outside drivers like crap, like 2nd. class citizens. Maybe that's the reason they can pay their drivers so well. They screw outside carriers and drivers out of their time and money.

@@Christophertruck If you have to be told how Walmart is, you aren't a truck driver or at least an OTR driver. But, they use to be a lot worse, you might stay there 6-8-10 hrs.you use to have to unload your trailer. People that work at Walmart think they are better than other drivers

I can only imagine how difficult this job really is, especially if you have a family but I can see this being a good job for someone single. You have a very good attitude and I'm sure that goes a long way. This seems like it can be a fun job in a way as long as you are out in the open roads and not in congested ones but doing this day in and day out can

You only end up a couple days without talking to anybody from home? Hell I went 2 years straight without talking to anybody from home or even going home while I was working in the Northeast for Swift Enterprises, Us Xpress, doing cabinet deliveries to 5-10 lumber yards that took anywhere from as little as 50 miles to as much as 500+ miles to get to each stop and delivering 10-40 cabinets per stop that weighed from 50lb-250lb unloading them unassisted manually that were stacked from floor to ceiling, non-palletized, and from nose to door. Typical temps were all below freezing during those years from 2018-2020 during the polar vortex periods. I had to track the pickup trailer loading status for readiness, the amount of boxes per stop, the hours of service mandates, speed limits and road conditions, vehicle maintenance during below freezing conditions, and so much more.
This is just two of the five years that I've been driving. You can't even imagine the kind of hell that we have been through us truck drivers.

This guy is lucky. I don't make enough money to go home every week. Or even close. I'm typically out 4 to 6 weeks to keep food on the table at home. Worst mistake I made, was staying with the same trucking company too long.
Don't ever get into trucking if you have a wife and kid, it's a great job for a guy who wants to be alone the rest of his days and live in the truck as not to pay rent.

I'm been driving trucks since 09, i did over the road on the northeast on and off for 6 years and i loved it at first but pandemic screwed everything. I'm back driving local, getting payed hourly and home in my bed with my wife every night. Do i miss it? Yes i do but i don't miss the headaches behind it.
I'm the same first 10 years OTR then went local the last 10 years and I made more money local. Well we still ran paper logs back when I ran OTR so there where times you grab that 2nd log book and pray you didn't mix them up when u got pulled into the scales like me. In my defense my wife was cleaning the truck as i was counting the load and she move my log book not understanding why I had 2 always filled out and put one of them away and down the highway theres DOT standing outside the scales checking seat belts. Which i wasn't wearing so he said do you want a seat belt ticket or log book violation. I said hell seat belt. That fucking ticket was like 500 bucks back in 2001. But now I'm back on the road as O/O. Wish I became a owner operator 20 years ago. I usually just go out 4 days then chill at home for 3. Just depends how lazy I feel.

I've been an o.t.r trucker for 25 years before retiring. Got divorced, missed most of important birthdays, events. Its a sacrifice i've made knowing that my familly would be well and bills would be paid. I missed out on many things but it is the life i lived. No regrets!

I wished they quit saying they get paid by the mile. Cents x distance in miles is one determinant of how much a load pays. Another is percentage. Either way, for that specific amount of money a driver agrees to perform the labor needed to transport a load from A to B. That includes pre-trips, post-trips, fueling, record-keeping both as required by business as well as regulatory compliance, and, of course, driving.
Even a drop-and-hook requires a certain amount of time. A live load or unload takes longer, but a driver has to weigh that against what the haul pays. It's only when a serious imbalance develops between time waiting and compensation that a driver has reason to complain
. At this point, my suggestion would be to get on the phone and inform your boss or broker that you would expect to have the value of your time respected with the addition of extra compensation.
But to me that situation is academic. I drive on the clock and get paid from when i start to when I leave the truck and everything in between. I wouldn't want it any other way,.
Way easier said than done. To be real, it probably depends who you work for.

Same thing applies to the customers =shippers and receivers -. If they don't respect your time, burn them on social media and haul for someone else.

Trucking is what you make it.
Some problems in trucking: crooked brokers, incompetent and pooly equipped shippers/receivers/unpaid waiting time, lack of parking, e-logs and the 14 hour rule and loads that only exist on the computer-not on the dock when you arrive. Good points-see the country, freedom, and still feel the 'cowboy' life.

02:25 Let's stop for a minute to appreciate this oddity of a fuel stop. This stop has a dedicated, high=speed fuel pump for trucks, but no satellite pumps. It's a quick and convenient stop, but he's taking up all the space on his side, blocking access to both gas pumps. Also I doubt that this place offers showers, should he want to clean up or just use the toilet for a while.
But hey, whatever works.
Probably the actual terminal didn’t allow filming for safety reasons so they had to just “get the shot.” From the consumer side.

Truckers are the backbone of America!
Trucking is a very lonely job, it’s not for everyone. If you don’t have a family and don’t mind the boredom then you’ll be fine.
Honestly, I found myself more bored @ a 9 to 5 but everybody's different. I enjoyed the exploration so to speak and being in a different area, trying different restaurants. I enjoyed it. Changed my life for the better monetarily. But it dedicates a lot of time and loved the challenge everyday whether it be getting in and out of a fuel station quickly, figuring out a problem and getting the ball rolling quickly, maybe fixing it myself to save time, or just backing in to a challenging parking spot. I was confident in my abilities. Time equals money. I was able to reach my goal of 6 figures saved.. it took a lot of hard work, smarts, and dedication to my craft.. I feel not many Truckers can do that in just 8 years.. just from what I see or hear many are broke.. so I feel I'm the exception and it makes me feel good
Get a local job your home ever day no weekends anything over 8 hours is overtime. There is NOT a DRIVER SHORTAGE!!!! Its lack of PAY!!!

Hmm! He's actually right about trucking! I was leased to a company pulling a reefer wagon for 3 1/2 of my 20yrs behind the wheel. I was out 4 weeks at time if you've got a family. Drivers certainly miss out on alot. Ppl don't realize or care. What it costs to supply the many grocery stores across the country. #SMH 😡

I have a question for the truckers. At what point is it worth it to stay in a hotel or motel as opposed to sleeping inside your truck at a truck stop or rest stop? Is there a need to house truck drivers for say 3 to 5 nights in a rental similar to an AirBNB?

When I first start driving! I’d love to do cross country hauls, long hauls and even into Canada but maybe once I get married and have kids I’ll probably just try to run east coast, or stay within my state or tri state area! I’m still waiting til I turn 21 lol then I can maybe try to start with Roehl Transport!

Stop blocking the left lane for miles, to pass a truck you're going 2 mph faster than.
This will stop the flow of traffic. You stop one problem and you will just create more elsewhere. For example, if it was illegal for the 62mph governed truck to pass a 61mph governed truck, you would accumulate enormous “packs” of trucks on the highways/interstates that would occupy the far right lanes of traffic. Now anyone that is wanting to get onto the highway will almost always have to come to a complete stop at the very end of the on ramp because there would be no space to get in and would need to wait for a “pack” to pass. Same goes with getting off the highway. You decide you want to get off the highway? Well now you have to merge into the far right lane miles ahead before your exit and wait behind those slow trucks until you reach your exit because now all those trucks can’t pass each other so they have no choice but to take up the right lanes. See the general public doesn’t realize why things are the way they are. They just see something that inconveniences them for a couple seconds and throw a fit but fail to realize that it is done for a reason but you people lack the critical thinking to think about what other problems are created if what YOU wanted to be enforced was actually enforced. You do not own the road it is for everyone to share, even if that means you will get to your destination 45 seconds later than usual because you had to wait for a truck to pass another. First world problems huh…

What might take a few hours to get to one place, now a few hours longer because we can’t drive 75 mph in some of those states where we as big rigs can drive 75 - 80 mph.

I’m one of those drivers that does that. I drive a governed truck that won’t go over 65 mph. If you’re not a truck driver you probably don’t understand two things. Number one is when you’re driving hundreds of miles in a day and have certain amount of work you need to get done 2 mph makes a big difference by the end of the day. Also if you drive a neutered company truck like mine and have very little power you can’t stay behind slow moving vehicles, you need to utilize the downhills to gain momentum. This job is all amount momentum, that’s also why many trucks don’t slow down to let you onto the highway. Once we slow down we lose all our momentum to get up the hill we’re climbing and at that point the car driver finally realizes they’re on the highway and decides to speed up. That’s why we usually get over into the next lane if we can.
I’m 34 I retired from trucking after driving for 15 years paid everything off took the rest of my money and invested it and now I don’t have to work ever again a smart business decision goes a long ways

you can tell the difference between a solo and team drivers. solo drivers tean to talk alot when they stop at truck stops, while teams dont, i was a solo driver, after a while i found out i talked a lot when i stopped, but i was out for a month at a time, didnt have to worry bout family.

@@lindajoy8216 usually i take a break outside to soak up some sun, but its too dang cold, even with a heavy coat, to stay out too long. have snow in the mtns, but nothing since early Nov, in the valley, just freaking cold, had a buffet for Thanksgiving. hows the weather where you are?

u have to enjoy working alone but u need a certain amount of people skills for things to go smooth , i truck and ya im alone alot but i make lots of stops too and need to be able to engage in conversation with people in a positive way to move things along being alone just means u wear all the hats 1 hat is loner but u need a sociable side too i think
I don't know, I would think with the increasing incidents of very violent road rage, having to drive a large truck with inconsiderate drivers would make you hate people even more.
