  • More than 11,000 members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) are set to go on strike for the first time since 2007. The move could bring an immediate halt to the production of many television shows and possibly delay the start of new seasons. #CNN #News

There was a stat I remember from the 2008 GFC that mentioned CEOS back in 1970s were making 15 times the wage of the lowest paid workers in their company, and in 2008 it was 240 times the amount - I am pretty sure the lowest paid individuals at Time Warner aren't getting paid $1m each, so you can only imagine the CEO is paid like more than 2,500x the amount of the regular employ... Gotta ask yourself, is that one man doing the same work as 2,500+ other people?

@@AnthonyCJW Thank you. My parents were both in management. Sometimes CEOs. They had ways to explain their contributions and I agree there were many that brought great savings and great profits. They were sometimes doubling profit or drastically reducing costs, but there were always people on the floor making those changes happen, navigating the problems, and making it work. The people who have the ideas don't implement them. I respect my parents. They got involved and helped implement. But when I worked in the industry I saw the reality for the people on the floor. I have PTSD from what I saw on the floor. The CEOs don't care about that. It's too far away. Like a general sending a new recruit to the front line.

Collective bargaining is the only power the average folk will ever have against greedy corporations. Unions are what got us the weekend, the 40-hour work week, overtime, and ended child labor. We owe the protections we have to them whether you've been in one or not.
I'm proud to say I'm currently applying for the same line of work as many generations of men in my family with the IUOE International Union of Operating Engineers. They take care of their people. Once a journeyman, you'll take home $30+ an hour with straight pay being in the $60+ an hour range. $8.50 per hour contributed to pension. $9.50 an hour contributed for healthcare. Union dues come out as well. And after all of that, you're still making $72k per standard work year if you work the 2,080 hours with no overtime. Except construction works loads of overtime and is somewhat seasonal. So you'll make more, and then have times laid off where you get a break and draw unemployment while the union hall looks for work FOR YOU. And they pay you to go through the apprenticeship as well with a "earn while you learn" model.
Find me anything besides a union that is going to do all that for you while all you need is a high school diploma. You can't. Unions are the way if you want to be confident you'll be taken care of as a human.

@@postone2821 Spreading partial truths is the same as lying. All Henry Ford did was make it more acceptable to actually implement a 40-hour work week. Unions had started fighting for it going back to the late 1800s, and some cities started passing laws in favor of it before 1926.
It wasn't until the Fair and Labor Standards Act of 1938 that it became law, and that's what made it mandatory for "white" jobs. I say that because they exempted jobs primarily held by black workers from most of these laws. In fact the concept of tipping workers originated from white employers not wanting to pay their black service workers wages, so they just left it up to customers to "tip" whatever they wanted.

But Ford isn't the government. Unions continued to push, demonstrate, and strike and eventually the Fair Labor Standards Act, establishing a 40 hour work week for all US workers, was signed into law in 1938.

It’s also like, if you pay your writers and give them fair treatment, that’s how you get good content for your platform. When the writer has the, as Adam mentions, a writer’s room where they can sit, collaborate, and really focus as well as have the time that’s more then a week or a day, that’s how you will get stories that are well thought out and not cheaply made. You have to pay for the quality and that’s how you get the streaming service or show people keep coming back to. These companies have to remember the human and emotion that goes into art as well as knowing you have to spend money, in paying your employees and keeping them happy, to make money, aka stories that we can love and cherish.

We're gonna end up with a society that's very comfortable looking at writers and artists as fools who picked a foolish career who deserve whatever pennies they get.
People are STUNNED that writers don't want AI to replace them and that we'd strike over it. That we should somehow be grateful that tech and the free market smiled upon us.

A lot of shows turned to sh!t really fast, and serials we're difficult for the original writers to salvage when they returned if the show was even still on air. If anyone remembers the tornado on _Desperate Housewives,_ well it was employed by the original writers to reset things and clean up the huge mess that had been created in their absence. Paying 100 bucks a paycheck to gain a career of reliable work is a great exchange.
I left tech support because I saw the writing on the wall that those types of customer facing tech support jobs will go away and be replaced by software automated systems, self service systems and AI.
And that happened mostly. Call centers are always changing so I can't be certain.
The Art market is WILD. There is absolutely no rhyme of reason to any of it and I blame similar causes. Large influential artists make claims or produce artwork that changes the market and everyone runs towards it.

We need more unions in the US so workers can demand equity in every industry. They have been successfully neutralized in a lot of industries that used to have strong unions & have been prevented from forming in businesses with large monopolies. Without unions, workers can't sustainably strike since workers are usually paid just at or under cost of living (e.g have multiple underpaid jobs). The whole point of unions is to give workers protection by each worker paying a small percentage to the union per paycheck so the union rep can demand better conditions and compensation for the workers, under threat of strike. Workers are paid some percentage of whatever they were making during the strike by the union, sometimes full salary & when the union is strong, the employer can't fire anyone for striking. Unions also provide protection from being fired for medical reasons and generally ensure excellent insurance coverage. I'm always amazed how thoroughly some people working in industries that would benefit from unions have bought into propaganda from employers that depicts unions as *anti* worker, to the point that they don't actually know what unions are or how much they actually stand to benefit from them

The kicker is that it is funnier, and more truthful than anything you will find here in America. And CNN wonders why sites like "black conservative patriot" get twice the views they get. The dude only has a cellphone and not six $100,000 cameras in a multimillion dollar corporate studio.

Thank god. All their work for the last few years has been mindless woke propaganda. They’re doing us a favor by giving us a pause from the incessant regurgitation of sequels and spinoffs. Maybe some actual storytelling will fill the void in the meantime.

Personally, the writers should out until they get all their demands met. I work in the industry and once your inside its wild how unsustainable of a job it can be unless you marry yourself to it.
However I truly can't stand this guy talking from the position as if HE himself is a pure writer and affected deeply by this. The guy lists himself as a Showrunner and EP on projects yet groups himself in the "We" category. Convenient for people like him to start refering to themselves as "we" when it finally bites "Them" in the ass. Why not interview the real day in and out writers
