    Really enjoy your Video's mate.. A couple of weeks ago we flew up to Townsville to avoid Melbourne's winter, & got a couple of days fishing in, fished the rock wall with plastics for a couple of small cod, & bait in the Ross off the rocks, I ended up with the BIGGEST TOAD fish I've ever seen 83cm ... & came home to Melb with the Nth Queensland accent... after every sentence... Hey... Keep up the good work & hope to catch you up there next year.. HEY.. 😁

      Ha ha ha. That’s the go…….Hey. 😜 The walls can be funny mate, and are so tide dependent. I’ve caught some decent fish around those areas mate, and all lure types work, hard bodies, vibes, blades, poppers etc at times. That’s a monster toady though. 🤣🤣

    Hi hodgie , just started my research as I’m planning a trip from the uk with “her indoors” to see her sister for 2 or 3 weeks in 2025 . Love the video. I’ll be just sport fishing and catch and release. Those trevali definitely sound like what I’m looking for.
    For general all round fishing and maybe a few sharks and stingers off the beach, what time of year would you suggest ?

      Gday mate. It’s bloody hot at this time of year and even plenty of locals won’t venture out in the heat and humidity hey. I’d have to say march ,April may, June July would be the most compatible weather for ya mate. If it’s Barra your after then march April would be good, as for the sharks mate, they’re here all year round the buggers. All the other species are a year round option really mate, but come and see me at the Fishing Warehouse when you get here and I’ll let you know what’s firing at the time. The Trev’s are a great sport fish and take lures and baits, and be can be caught in the rivers or out on the beach. The big buggers are mainly offshore if your after them. 👌🏻😉

    Another informative video mate , good job. Qst for you, lm Iooking at getting a new offshore spinning rod to target larger surface style lures for Queensland, mackerel, gt and reef fish bottom bait as well. I currently have several atomic arrows baitcast rods and light spin rods and love them. I'm thinking of the larger offshore series rod up to 40 lb rating and want to know Ur thoughts and also what reel to suit . I love the top water style fishing so exciting . Im based in cairns so typical target Fitzroy Island coast line areas.

      Ow sorry I forgot to ask what top water lures you would recommend to target those fish species mentioned in previous msg and what lb line and leader to suit rod reel combo. Cheers again mate. Keep up the the good work.

      Wow mate. I just saw this message and not sure how I missed it. I apologise mate. Mate the heavier stuff is pretty brutal and as far as GT’s go they’re as bad as they get. I’d be looking towards a 50lb minimum outfit if it’s to try and cross all of those species and environments. Definitely spin, s your going to need to cast some distance with lighter lures. The problem comes in with bottom bouncing and longer rods, which tend to make anglers high stick. I’d probably have to say a 6’6” to 7’ long rod in the 15 to 24kg rating would be handy. Reasonably long rear grip to allow you to get it up under your armpit for up and don stuff, plus the long distance casting. Decent reels for this would be a Shimano Saragossa, Penn Slammer 4, or any good brand reel in this price bracket, which is around the $400.00 plus range. Rod wise, well thats a bit more complex as there are so many to choose from and the price range is quite broad. In the samurai range there are several models but none are cheap as they’re all premium rods, and the Atomic while less expensive, wouldn’t really suit the bottom bouncing stuff. Again I’d stick with well known brands, in the $250 to $500 price bracket if that’s within your budget. Sorry for the vagueness, mate, but there’s a wide range of outfits depending on your budget. 🤪✌🏻

    what brand and weight braid do you use on your spin reels looking at respooling some 2500 and 3000 size reels doing the same type of creek luring

    • @hodgiethebarefootfisherman8393
      @hodgiethebarefootfisherman8393  Před 2 lety

      Mate 15 to 20lb is good for the lighter lures and stuff like that. Generally speaking, 150m is enough, but if you can afford to go am300 spool that will give you some extra fighting distance if you hook a horse Queenie or GT by accident. 30lb is reserved by us for the big fish only pursuit, but we do air on the lighter side of things. You loose the odd fish to rub offs from Barra’s but it’s pretty rare to be honest. 30lb leader is what we’ve settled on these days, with the odd wow to 25lb leader days depending on adventurous we feel.

    Nice change of pace from the usual dodging crocs every step you take...It's been 40 years since I caught one, but I still think trevallys are the hardest fighting fish lb for lb in the water.
