      Hey Darren, would you know why his shapes aren't transparent even though they aren't closed? I tried to recreate this but the limbs are transparent. And since the leg alone is 3 parts, I don't know how to close it as neatly as it's done here, like the hand and thigh joints. Any help is deeply appreciated. Thanks in advance! :)

    Greetings BARRICADOS. Once again you have made a brilliant tutorial (no other word for it, (it's 10/10). The tutorial is knowledgable, patient, and detailed. Can't help being enthusiastic about your OPENTOONZ videos seeing you've saved me so much time and frustration. Your videos are NOT just the 25 minutes etc. the user experiences. It's obvious your creators have spent hours PLANNING THE VIDEO, (which the user can't see) to hit the educational target. As OPENTOONZ has generously given a free chance to some poor person to earn a living, BARRICADOS has complimented the effort with great tutorials. Your effort is beyond videos, it's philanthropic. (I am a 75 year old retired planning engineer from Brisbane, Australia, dabbling in music and animated videos).

    This is an amazingly done tutorial, perfect pace, and informative without bogging down with every single thing and keeping it on point. I love that you used the robo voice exactly the way it is supposed to so there is very little "umm" and "wait a sec". It kept moving without being distracted. I greatly look forward to your other videos and the future.
    I hope you can later go into some of the more specialized functions, as I am very new to animation and would love to learn more.

    Thanks sooooo much!! I love the way you explain things! So, so easy to follow along and learn with. I aspire to be as good at Opentoonz as you are someday! Thanks for helping me learn to get there! :)
    Possible suggestion for another lesson: Could you go over using the fill tool and editing the colors after you animate? Like... with the walk cycle, say the character was wearing blue rectangular pants... I would love to learn how to either properly use after-animation cleanup, or how to correctly draw joints to avoid like the corners of the pants detatching at the knee when it is bent.

      Thanks for your stellar comment Shooting Star! Regarding smoother joints, you can try several things. Rounded edges generally make for better joints. Also, the plastic tool or shape-tweening are good ways to create that perfect knee bend. Or you can just draw over the messy bits in another layer (parent a new layer to your character, and use this instead during the untidy joint bits).

    Great tutorial. You've packed a lot of info into 30 mins! One question: when you have multiple copies of the character in the same scene, is there some way to make the animations run at different times, so the characters don't all march in unison? So the walk cycles are offset, each copy starting the cycle at a different time? (Don't konw if I've explained this clearly). I'm coming from Flash, and you could decide which frame a clip starts on, which was really useful.

      Thanks Pieter! Ah Flash.. one of our all time favs^^. Yes you can decide which frame a clip starts on, just like in Flash. You'll have noticed that in OT columns are like layers, and the timeline runs from top to bottom instead. You can grab the contents of a column by clicking on the left side of it, and dragging it up or down. This has the same effect as dragging a movie-clip to the left or right in Flash. So to delay the start of a column, click and hold on the left side of the contents, and drag down. Similarly, if you add extra frames at the start of a column, the rest of it's contents will move down.
      If you want a clip to start later than it's first frame, say frame 5, then select and delete the first 5 frames, and drag the block of frames up or down so the clip starts playing when you want it to.

    Hats off, Barricados! They say the best way to learn is to retrace the steps of the pros. I'm just wondering since you did not say it -- what raster level were you using? I got as far as trying to play around with the head but when I tried to deform it with the magnet tool, a warning sign pops out that says "the current tool cannot be used on a Toonz level." I'm just starting out in animation and this is a great tutorial that has helped me with OpenToonz.

      Hi Thomas, thanks for your kind words^^. If you want to be able to tweak your lines and points (and use the magnet tool), you'll need to use a Toonz vector level. If you want to make use of photoshop-like brushes and effects, then pick a raster level. The tutorial above is all done in vector levels. Each has their advantages and you can mix them up as you wish in OpenToonz. Good luck with learning OT.. and happy animating!

      Thanks Syed! Just drag and drop your image into Opentoonz^^. You can also import through the file or right-click menu.

      So if we want to place a picture as background or we want to use the picture as reference. We will use the same method and delete the reference picture after drawing the required part of picture

    i found this and others of your tutorials very helpfull, using this one right now to make an animation that i need as a gif, but when i export it as a gif the gif doesnt show anything, where as the mp4 export plays, do you know what the issue could be here ?
    i really need it as a gif since i'm making an alert for streaming

      Hi Gargoyled. Strange that your gif export shows nothing. Without more info and being able to replicate your problem, it's hard to know what is causing it.. but there are a few things you could try.
      It could be an issue with your ffMpeg installation.. check that you have the latest versions of OT and ffMpeg installed. (NobleFrugal has a recent tutorial on the latest ffMpeg builds for windows: czcams.com/video/7HPsLMrpZPk/video.html).
      It could also be a transparency issue, in which case the gif export may be rendering a white layer over the top of your animation. Check for potential culprit levels in OT that are placed in front of your other layers and are being misinterpreted as solid.
      A simple but dirty solution would be to use a free gif converter (eg. Wondershare Filmora, Free Video to GIF Converter, ezgif.com etc.) to convert your video file into a gif.
      You may also be interested in trying out Tahoma2D, which is a version of OT with ffMpeg already installed.
      I hope you manage to fix your gif export. If the problem persists then some more info from your side might help. Good luck!

    Great tutorial....I'm having an issue where the copied frames are married to each other. If i edit one image the copied images gets altered as well. Is there anyway to ungroup the copied images?

      Thanks^^. Sounds like you're working on a copy of a column, in which case this will happen. Try instead to select the contents and paste them into a new column. Choose the column, select it's first frame (in the level strip), and with the selection tool select and copy the contents. Then make a new column and paste.     All overlapping layers are visible in my case ,not like you demonstrated with the leg hiding behind the body .Am I missing something ?By the way, this is the most informative opentoonz tutorial I have found ,1 like from my side.Thanks.

      I normally work with white and transparent fills with black outlines.In opentoonz , the outline and fill color option selection via the style palate is not that straight forward as compared to other free programs like blender where their are separate color options available for the two.If possible ,please make a video clarifying the fill and outline color selection technique in opentoonz .Thanks.

      Hi Star Zar. Yep, it's quirky but works great once you know it.. much like Blender really.
      By default, colour 0 is always totally transparent. If you select a shape, and click this colour, you'll make the stroke transparent. That's how you set the outline.. select a shape and click a colour. Filling is with the bucket tool (F). Double-clicking a colour edits it, and the A value half way up needs to be 255 if you want a colour to be solid. Hope that's of some help.. I'll try include more in a future tutorial.

      Thanks for the reply ,Barricados. There was some issue with the first installation of OT(moverna) on my machine , the colors where not getting selected and all the tool options where not displayed .I have reinstalled it and now when when I use a white fill the background layers hide perfectly .Thanks again, for the prompt response.

    Can you please tell me how I can add 3 or more characters walking at the same time in a beautiful background?

      Hi Be Happy! The best way to do this is to save your walking character loop as an OT file. Now open a new OT file containing your background and import the character as many times as you like as a sub-Xsheet. You can now position, scale, and manipulate each of your characters in their own column.
      (You can also simply copy and paste your columns to duplicate your walking character, but things can get messy this way. Alternatively, you can export the walk as a transparent png sequence and import where needed, though the chosen resolution will limit your ability to play with scaling).
      Once you've imported the walking loop, you'll probably want to tween its movement from one side of the scene to the other. Use a simple tween along the x-axis for this, and if you want the walk to be more realistic, use the hook tool. Pay attention to the type of tween (interpolation) that is being used.. you'll want to pick linear for this
      (see video at 17:50 for info about using the Xsheet). Happy animating!

    I used plastic.... Is there anyway to loop your character walk? So when u continue to make it walk it it going from point A to point B?

      Hi, there are a couple of options for you to loop your plastic walk. The simplest would be to render your walk as transparent pngs, then import these as a png sequence into a column and loop this in your timeline. This will give you most of the flexibility you need, and you can now tween the position etc. as your character walks.
      Another method is to save your plastic walk in its own OT file, then open a blank OT document and import this file as a sub-XSheet. You can now loop this in a column, and also go in- and out of the Xsheet for any tweaking.

      Hi Blain, on the bottom of the schematic screen you will see some icons. The icon at the very bottom-right toggles between fx and stage schematics. Press this^^.

    Epic tutorial as it is, but while redoing it, I couldn't figure out how you made the lines in the joints disappear. Like the wrist and the knee. The parts that I've drawn are transparent. I'm a noob! :-(

      Both parts of the legs are filled with white. At 1:00, the bottom leg column (layer) is arranged behind the top leg column. This hides the black line at the top of the bottom leg behind the white of the top leg. You'll notice that the top leg doesn't have a black line at the bottom - it is filled with white and closed at the bottom with a transparent line. To do this, draw a line to close the shape and select colour 0 to make the line transparent. Let me know if this helps.

      Yes there is. Select some columns and via the top menu choose Xsheet > collapse. Your levels should collapse into a single purple column, called a Sub-Xsheet. You can open and close this with Xsheet > open/close Sub-Xsheet.. or use the handy icons just above your columns.

    Thank you. At 21:23 when you say, "Add some frames so he walks off the screen." When I use the same technique to add the frames, the animation moves off the screen eventually but each cycle of 36 frames the pose goes back a frame before moving forward. . Looks jerky. What am I doing wrong?

      Hi WannaBe, presuming your walk animation is looping through frames 1 to 36 as in the video, it sounds like your first or last hook-point at the back of the heal may not be in the correct place.
      What the hook tool actually does is to change the x-axis center of each frame of your walk loop.
      The first and last frames of your walk loop animation should be identical, so the hook-points should also be in exactly the same position relative to the heal. If it jerks between the first (fr.1) and last (fr.36) frames, the chances are you need to adjust the position of your hook-point.
      Hope that helps. Let me know if you fix it :)

      @@Barricados Thank you for answering questions long after your original upload. I have achieved some improvement based on your recommendation to examine closely the last and first frames of the walk cycle. I also got better results when I started with the same pose as in your tutorial, the "passing" pose, as the first frame. Not sure why that would matter but I had better results compared with using the "contact" pose as the first frame.

    im having a hard time creating the parent child relationship on the animation page, do to the fact that they refuse to connect together unless it is either on the xsheet or an output, both of which have red arrrows. otherwise the tabs will not connect with eachother without a red arrow, thoughts?

      Hi Ryan, I'm afraid I'm not sure I fully understand your situation. Every layer in OT should be able to connect to each other in the animation tab, with the red dot representing the parent in the relationship. What exactly are you trying to connect?

      @@Barricados so I have two layers, one layer is a level where I have line work of a drawing, the second layer/ level I've colored in to color the line work of the drawing of the first level. Now I want to create a motion tween. But this requires both level to follow the same motion tween path. So I thought following your method would be a simple solution but for some reason on the animation tabs levels/layers aren't connecting with each other, they only are connecting to the xsheet tab and or an "output" tab but never to eachother

      @@ryanflux9580 Ok I see it now.. thanks for the video^^. The issue seems to be the schematic mode that your animation tab is currently in. You are currently in the FX schematic, for linking effects, and you want to be in the stage schematic instead, which is for linking layers. At the very bottom right-hand corner of your animation tab you should see an icon that looks like 2 folders overlapping. This toggles between the stage and FX schematics.. so press it once, and you should enter the stage schematic where you can see the blue and red dots in their full glory. Anything linked to a red dot becomes a child of that layer. Hope this helps and good luck!

    um I just find out about open toonz today....can I import image (character front back and side view) into open toonz and make the character rotate because I dont like to draw in Open toonz and I use Medibang for all my drawings can u help me?

      Hi Shoujo, yes you can import images. The easiest way to do this is to drag them into your OpenToonz columns. If you name your drawings like a sequence, (eg. pose_01, pose_02, etc) then they will be added to a single column, which is what you want to rotate your character. Otherwise each image gets it's own column.

    When I started to change my drawing just like you did in 4:50 , even though I put the keyframes, all the frames in the same column changed as well. Whyy?? Please help me :(

      Hi Nayanne. Hmm.. that sounds strange. Are you sure that you are on a new frame number when you make your changes (in this case on frame 12, having set a start-position keyframe at frame 1)? If you only make changes on the first frame, then these will show throughout the whole column. Every time you move to a new frame number and make changes, OT should record these in a new keyframe and automatically draw the bits in between for you. If this is not the case you could try restarting OT, and make sure to install the latest version as well. Let me know if this helps at all :)

      @@Barricados Hii thanks for answering me! I was trying to draw in another frame having set a start-position keyframe at frame 1 by using the right mouse button, but for some reason, even though the key was already showing, I had to put a 1° rotation in the first frame for the key work properly. Your tutorial helped me a lot!! Thank you so much!!!

      Make sure to put your hand lines and fills on a different level to your body lines and fills. It sounds like they're mixed. Go through each of your character's layers and check that they only contain what they should, and then name them. You can cut and paste lines from one level to another using the usual short-cuts. Then to rearrange the order, drag your levels to the left or right.

    When I paste the keyframes they move those that underneath them. How to prevent this?

      To prevent your existing keyframes from moving down when you are pasting in new frames, use 'paste special'. Select the frame where you want to insert your copied frames, right mouse-click and choose 'paste special'. Then choose the option 'paste into' (The second option 'paste numbers' will also work when pasting level numbers). That's it. Your pasted frames should now replace the appropriate number of frames underneath and nothing will move down.

      Just select the frame in your levels column and use the usual short cuts: Ctrl C to copy and Ctrl V to paste :)
