  • Sausage balls are an ideal appetizer to enjoy with your family while everyone is opening presents at Christmas, or really any time for any gathering. You can also enjoy these for breakfast, plus they're great to freeze and re-heat.
    INGREDIENTS
    1 lb. country sausage
    2 cups Bisquick (or your preferred biscuit mix)
    1 lb. shredded cheddar (I use half mild, half sharp)
    Mix ingredients together and bake in 350º oven for about 20-25 minutes.
    Did you know you can get 6-lb boxes of Bisquick at Amazon!? amzn.to/3djVtEh

    I mention my homemade biscuit recipe in this video.

    A good updated version says to sift your Bisquick before measuring and you will have much lighter and fluffier sausage balls. You can put this in your stand mixer and gently mix it with the flat cookie dough blade. The rest of the instructions are the same. Love your channel. You have such a gentle soft voice that is comforting.

      These Sausage Balls are great for a crowd! Just like you said, everybody can enjoy them the way they like them best. I recently posted an updated version (actually an older recipe that my aunt gave me over 20 years ago that I recently found) that's slightly different and I think I may like it even better than this recipe!

    Recipe for sausage cheese balls my family has been making for 30+ years...
    1lb HOT Jimmy Dean sausage.. just adds a little extra flavor & kick, but isn't too spicy.
    8oz block Cracker Barrel or Cabot Vermont sharp white cheddar.. best cheese for this recipe, period!
    1 cup bisquick mix.. I find if you use more than 1 cup of bisquick in this recipe the balls turn out dry and tasteless.
    Preheat oven to 375. Cut up and microwave cheese until melted (let cool a few minutes) add sausage & bisquick MIX WELL. Form into small balls, place on sheet pan and bake about 8 minutes.. then using a spoon flip all the balls over and bake an additional 8 to 10 minutes. Remove, cool, ENJOY!

      It's great we all have recipes that our families love for this! There have been several different comments with different spins on this recipe. I think that's awesome! We've never been big fans of sharp cheddar in our family so while I use some sharp cheddar, I only use it for about half of the cheese. Sometimes I don't use it at all. We don't use the spicy sausage because we like to make this friendly for the littlest members of our family and they don't like spicy stuff. And we like to use 2 cups of Bisquick because we like them to not be so dense! Everyone has their own favorite ways of eating things. Enjoy these however you like to make them! Thanks for watching. 👩🏻‍🍳

      @@OldTimeKnowledge Hi, the Jimmy Dean hot sausage is actually pretty mild (even for the littlest members of the family.) I know because my family's spice threshold is pretty darn low. Spicy with a capital S is Tennessee Pride hot sausage! I tried this recipe with it one time.. and won't be making that mistake again lol! But if you want no spice at all Jimmy Dean regular is definitely the way to go. I have also made these with Jimmy Dean Sage sausage and it was pretty tasty. I'm not a big lover of standard sharp cheddar's myself, but Vermont white cheddar is really smooth and creamy it truly lends itself to this recipe. I love all the variations on this recipe and thought I would share mine. Thanks for commenting!

      @@stacylynn2457 If you say the white cheddar isn't too sharp, I will certainly keep an eye out and try that one! I actually LOVE spicy food, but not everyone in my family does. We have been using the Jimmy Dean mild or local country sausage for as long as I can remember. I'm 45 and I even remember the women in my family making this when I was a little girl. You know, I think this recipe must've appeared in a magazine or something back in those days because it seemed like for a while there everyone was making these! I'm glad you shared your version! I've been surprised by the folks who said they like to serve these with a dip. I never thought of that. I'll bet it's tasty though! Also, adding in green onions. I don't think I'll do that because (as I'm sure you can relate), we can get attached to doing things a certain way with our recipes, but it's certainly a worthwhile idea! 😁 You know one time I made these and forgot to add the bisquick altogether. I kept wondering why they were so greasy when I took the pan out of the oven, then I realized what I had done. I was so disappointed! 😂

    Easy as can be. I added some diced up green onions (scallions) to my mix. No salt needed at all. I liked that the bottoms were a bit crispy after 25 minutes at 325. Make your favorite dip for these. I suggest using a spicy sausage. I will experiment with other additions. Thanks.

    • @OldTimeKnowledge
      @OldTimeKnowledge  Před 3 lety

      Yep, I've never had to add salt to these. The sausage, the cheese, and the Bisquick are all salty enough. 👌 I've never thought of adding scallions to them, but that's a clever idea. What kind of dip do you enjoy with these?

      @@OldTimeKnowledge I tried a cilantro Aioli only because I had half a bunch sitting in the fridge. It was okay, however I want to try a chipotle aioli next. And next time I will also add at least 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper to the sausage balls. I may add some grated parmesan to them too. The variations are endless. Leftover balls in the toaster oven are great. Tweak these babies and make them your own.

    Hello I am watching you from Australia what is Bisquick is it a flour.

    • @OldTimeKnowledge
      @OldTimeKnowledge  Před 3 lety

      Great question! I know what Bisquick is, but I wasn't sure how to explain it so I looked it up on Wikipedia! This is what it says: "Bisquick is a pre-mixed baking mix ... consisting of flour, shortening, salt, sugar and baking powder (a leavening agent)." Bisquick can be used for making all kinds of quick bread products, from biscuits to pancakes to casseroles to foods like these sausage balls. If you have any sort of quick flour-based baking mix that seems like it would have similar ingredients, you might be able to try that as a substitute. Thanks for watching!

    I made these just last night and unfortunately, I chose a Betty Crocker recipe to follow. It called for 3 cups od bisquick instead of 2. It came out more like little muffins and was way too bread like. I wish I had seen this video first.

      I've had them that way, I think... You're right. Too much bisquick and it's just not the same thing! These sausage balls are exactly like the women in my family have made them since I was a little girl back in the 80s so I'm glad to have the recipe. If you make my recipe, let me know if that's more what you're expecting. Have a Happy New Year!

      @OldTimeKnowledge  Před rokem

      We don’t typically make sauce for these, but I’ve heard people mention all different kinds of things. Some have suggested a mustard sauce, others have suggested a ranch type sauce, some have suggested a sweet-and-sour sauce. It’s just down to what kind of flavors you might like to mix with sausage. 😃

    About how long did it take to get it thoroughly mixed together?

    • @OldTimeKnowledge
      @OldTimeKnowledge  Před 2 lety +1

      I think probably about five minutes. If you are having a really hard time mixing these ingredients together, you can add just maybe a tablespoon of water and that will likely help moisten things enough that you can work it all together.
