Pen spring shock mod

  • edit: Success. All future videos have this mod. Example wall climb capability • TRXcellence Vol. 5 So as we all know, at steep angles, the weight of the truck shifts, causing shocks to unload, which causes the springs of the shocks to push the body / chassis away from the axle. This of course, causes a center of gravity shift, which at steep angles, can cause your truck to roll.
This mod puts a pen's spring internally around the shock shaft, to push back on the piston, to counteract the outer spring's tension. Getting the balance of spring tension is crucial, because you want your shocks to extend under axle weight, to keep traction..but at steep angles, you want the internal spring to keep your body/chassis from lifting.
With enough brass, this shouldn't be a problem. I personally only have outer portals and c-hubs, so if you've got more..you're probably good to go, depending on the pen spring's rate. Other ways to add weight, would be a brass diff cover, metal axles, some sport guys put brass washers in their diffs, etc etc. As long as your axle weighs enough to pull down vs your pen (internal) springs..you should be good to go. Hopefully.
This is all new to me. I've heard of it, but haven't seen anyone who's done it or really talked about it..and I've been wanting to try it for a while. Lemme know what you've found out about it!

I set the inner springs so the axle and wheels dont drop with their own wheight. Full drop only when opposite wheel goes full compression. Otherwise its almost only reduces amount of travel.
I also use injora 100 mm shocks, which are compressed same lenght as original 90mm shocks. This way i dont loose travel, its actually more travel and flex then original but with droop mod.

Cool stuff. Just got into all this, so dumb question. Are you running shock oil with the pen spring?

Yep. I'm using 15wt. Note, the length of the compressed spring, will reduce travel by that amount. The first cheap pens I bought, had some weird, super double spring, that would have taken too much travel.

15wt all around? How do you like the mod for standard crawling?

@@chadmelton6355 I like it. You can see how it behaves in trxellence 5 and 6. In 6, I got to really give it a go..and it's working great. I personally like the droop type setup, and it's lower cg..so it's more than just looks. Initially, I thought the shock when extending, was doing something weird, but it seems to be good.
As for 15wt..I honestly couldn't really tell much of a diff..but I did the pen spring with it, which drastically changed everything..so that's probably why.

@@chadmelton6355 oh, yeah.. 15 all around. I wanted to try 10, but not lhs only had 15. I hear it makes a big improvement..but again, haven't noticed vs the springs

What is the advantage of this mod?
I see that you have less suspension travel

    • @ExaltedRC

Maintain low center of gravity at all times.

You think is a good mod for all crawlers and trail trucks? . I want to try but i don't want to lose capabilities

    • @ExaltedRC
      @ExaltedRC  Před 4 lety +6

@@GastonMaqueda it's more for crawling..like actual crawling. If you're going full speed, bumping and jumping around on trails..maybe not. If you're driving slow, looking for the next spot to crawl, I think it's good. Little getting used to..but I think it's helped make my truck what it is today..and I honestly think I've got one of the better performing trx4 out there.
