    This MOBILE WORKSHOP Could Change the Construction Industry!! (The Ultimate Carpentry Trailer...)
    When I was a professional carpenter working in the field, I operated out of a van with all my tools in it. But I dreamt of a having a fully mobile workshop on wheels that had everything I needed, and could be set up in seconds. This year at IBS 2023, I found just what I was looking for...the CT1 from On-Site Building Solutions, a small family business manufacturing out of Foley, Alabama!
    It's perfect for contractors, carpenters, and a range of other tradespeople who need a custom mobile workshop trailer.
    Check out the full video to see how this amazing feat of engineering works!
    Thanks!

    • @h82fail
      @h82fail Před rokem +2

      @@FREENAMEFTW Sounds stupid but I had the same thought.
      1. Park the thing in a big shed (Small 1 car garage sized). Then either do work in driveway or move into normal sized 2 car garage to do work. Or if you have oversize 2 car, it can have other stuff around the sides - mechanic stuff, big tools etc. Lots of woodworking stuff like table saw needs to be pulled out for space to be used anyway so having a trailer moving it all at once doesn't seem like it would take any longer.
      2. Doubles as trailer to get lumber if you don't have a pickup.
      3. Trailer makes everything now potable, even hobbyist has to work other places - for yourself, friend, or side job to make some money for more tools. Everyone has loaded their tools.
      Too bad its too expensive (40k) for a hobbyist that doesn't do serious side work. Hobbyist like me would love it, I can always wait for good weather. Professional would have to do specific job styles I think to want this - Outdoor job sites where you wouldn't be working in the rain anyway, or building things inside of large spaces like convention halls or arenas. Not sure if they build temporary structures for trade shows and concerts stuff like that.

I must admit I did not know about this most interesting Foley company, but have been producing for over 20 years food, home, health & Recreation convention shows and also home builder shows too. I am most impressed with this unique talented Alabama company that just thinks out of the box, so-to-speak and they will for sure get a lot of business from the trades, as this is just what was needed on any job site..... An enclosed trailer is hard to beat and have been used for fully enclosed carpentry and contracting shops for decades; and you can work in/from them in the rain.
    I’ll stick to my custom trailer, which can be leveled and locked of the vehicle, and worked from or directly out of; it also has a generator and het pump for both heat and AC. I also have a pair of cord spools that can allow the trailer to be hooked to either a 30 Amp/250V or a standard 125V outlet. I also have a pair of pop-up tents on board that can be hooked to the back of the trailer to expand working area even in the rain. And with an enclosed trailer you can work in the rain and simply close and lock up at night. I even have a 4 camera security DVR system on board that runs off a pair of deep cycle batteries that double as my electric brake and lighting batteries. A 7.5’x16’ V-Nose trailer is a great size, at lest for me, but you can go larger like an 8.5’x24’ which can be sizes and similar to a small shop.
    Treating this trailer like it’s a new idea is a little ridiculous as I’ve been in the trades for a few decades now and have seen trailers since I started. Frankly open trailers haven’t been used by most for quite some time as you can’t readily secure them, on their own, and they don’t offer working protection to work in the rain. While open trailers may work OK in a garage that’s not always available and tend to never be available for rough framers.

    What a brilliant idea. The only drawback i see is getting it close enough to the home, especially on a crowded jobsite. Trim carpenter's dream, and when they arrive, there is not too much going on at a job site.

    • @timmietimmins3780
      @timmietimmins3780 Před rokem +3

      Do you find that toebe the case?
      I work in trim carpentry, and we are frequently double booked with the following:
      Drywall techs, electricians, plumbers, flooring guys, remedial framers, stair builders, and tile crews (particularly tile and electrical, plumbing is much less common). We also often have guys siding the outside of our house while we trim the interior. And siding guys, understandably, ALWAYS have a trailer and always park it as close as possible, and usually leave it overnight, so they always get the best parking.
      In addition, we are frequently 3-4 guys in a house (our crew is 6, but we are usually spread over 2-3 jobsites), and we work in urban areas, so there may be a need for some of us to park well away from the house. And beyond that, there is absolutely no guarantee that someone else won't have parked in front of our house. (as in, trades for other sites). Not to mention that there may just be heavy equipment left in front of our house, like zoom booms.
      We also frequently get cabinets or more materials for us delivered while we are working, so even if we are parked in front of our house, it's super common for someone to ask us, as a courtesy, to move, so they don't have to hump cabinets across the street.
      I do wonder what sort of trim carpenters people are thinking about. We are the "in and out super fast" guys, so we just can't spare the room out front, and the in a house for a month guys (Spencer Lewis, Ron Paulk), I can't imagine touching this with a ten foot pole, simply because they are so focused on keeping things as close together as possible. Both have spoke about it at length, with Paulk's current setup having all his tool stations on wheels so he can just wheel them around the site as needed to spend less time moving materials.

If I had to go back to work, I'd love to build a rig like this only in a toy hauler trailer for weather and especially theft protection. Using 80/20 aluminum profile to build the infrastructure would make an awesome rig. I'd cover the roof with solar panels and have batteries to reduce the need for a generator. Makes me want to forget that I am 75 and go back to work!

  • @clutteredchicagogarage2720

    This is truly awesome. I'm really impressed with this design. This seems perfect for many carpentry jobs where there will be an available driveway. It'll let crews set up faster, clean up faster, and probably get better accuracy on a lot of work because the work stations will let you achieve workshop-level accuracy at the job site without spending a ton of time setting everything up. I'm not a pro carpenter or builder -- I just do some work on my own house. When I need to make a few cuts, I might set up a couple saw horses and use a circular saw instead of pulling my job site miter saw out of a cabinet and setting it up on a stand. If I had a mobile workstation that allowed me to store and quickly set up a portable miter-saw station, I'd use the miter saw for this. I think guys would make similar decisions on a job site, and having this kind of setup would increase usage of the table saw and miter saw or a full pocket-hole station rather than a portable pocket-hole jig, which would result in higher-quality work.
    The design with the dust-collection boom and dedicated spot for a dust separator + shop vac is also amazing. I have a GC friend who, sadly, seems to be developing some early-onset COPD. I see way too many contractors cutting wood or even drywall and masonry! with no dust collection or protection. I discovered that even when I'm working outside with my job site table saw, if I don't wear a mask and use dust extraction for every long rip, I'll develop a bit of a cough after a couple hours of work. Seeing other people develop chronic lung problems made me decide that I want to use dust collection on every rotary-blade saw that I own. I even sometimes line up a vacuum in one hand when I have to make a lot of cuts with a jigsaw. It's a bit of a hassle, but you save time later on cleanup, and you breath better after you've been working for hours.

    Those rail systems that pull out for mounting large saws and whatnot need drop-down height adjustable legs integrated to provide needed support. I can see those rails are sturdy, but I also saw them flex down with weight, especially the table saw in the extra extended position. Just my opinion. A mobile large canopy setup to put over this trailer system would seem logical just for some shade and or protection if it started to rain.

    I always wanted to build a trailer out of a utility truck tool box bed that would keep all my tools organized, locked up, and mobile for jobs. Larger tools like a ,table saw/job saw, generator, chop saw, etc. would go in the bed, mounted on rollers or it's own wheeled stand of some kind, sheets of plywood could be transported on it's own rack inside. A canopy would be mounted to the top of the boxes protecting the contents and creating a covered space to get out of the weather, etc. And a standard truck lumber rack mounted over the top of the canopy for lumber.
    This would also allow me to back it into my shop which would have a horseshoe of work benches built along the walls. Accessing a tool would just mean turning around and pulling it out of the trailer, which is now my shop cabinet storage, locked away in my garage.
    Camping out of this arrangement would also be easy, with kayak/bike, etc. mounting on the lumber rack, and other gear and food organized in the tool boxes.
    Really the main components are a trailer, canopy, and lumber rack and could probably be found piece meal on Craigslist after a few weeks of diligent scanning, and you wouldn't even need to modify anything. Affordable for any tradesman.

    For use in the NE it needs two more things: A canopy, because it rains all the time, and a way to completely lock it from being moved when it's parked. Like 'quick turn to remove the wheels and put them inside' kind of lock.

      me too. lets see, a 5 gallon pail with a roll of heavy duty roll of bags inside, do your 💩 and twist off the bag and trash it. A toilet seat mounted above on a strong rail and a place to hang your roll of TP. For luxury you could add a shower curtain pull around, but if you gotta go, like some of us gotta go, I wouldn't care if there was a curtain or not, a 💩with a view, lol.

    That's a huge game changer for construction. Putting everything into a compact, portable and flexible system is great. Having the ability to secure it in a standard garage is a big deal.

    i love the idea of this. being able to pull up at the job site and have a full set up ready to go. this is a great design but i think it lacks 2 important details. it needs to protect the tools from rain and be able to close up faster. i was looking at building something like this before and i was going to have the sides lift up and act as a roof and then pull out the tools and supports . that way you can push them back in very easily and lock up the rig while your inside or at lunch

    • @dwayne7356
      @dwayne7356 Před rokem +6

      I was think the same thing. How does rain, snow, and salt affect the unit in the Northeast? With working off the sides of the unit, if you can't get it in a driveway will you be blocking a street? What happens when you buy new tools, do you have to reorder your custom tool holders? I agree it is a fast set up but what if you could set up on a 2nd floor on a project. Where do you store your saw stands? In the van or trailer that you already have? What happens on unlevel ground?

    • @charlestaylor3195
      @charlestaylor3195 Před rokem +4

      Ya know, an expandable roof would complete this, like if it rains, but also to shade from the sun, since we stay over 100° f all summer long.

    • @cgschow1971
      @cgschow1971 Před rokem +2

      Parking could also be a huge problem. Due to space and weather, I would never be able to set that up 90% of the time on the typical jobs we get.

    • @skmk88
      @skmk88 Před rokem

      Use one of the storage units as a compartment for a fold out tent if you worry about that so much. Plus you have extra storage in whatever you use to haul the trailer, so you have plenty of ways to figure out how to cover it if you want to. You’re looking for a problem with such a simple solution 😂
