      Free art history lesson here, @RemnantDiscipleLazzaro-Rev1217 Many roman and greek classical sculptors idealized the human form. If you think @topaventador4064 's interpretation is carnal what would you make of the nudes? Attractive and sexual human forms have been subjects of sculpture since its inception. See for reference: venus of hohle fels, venus of willendorf, venus of dolni vestonice, and of course, venus de milo. You're the one demeaning sculpture by emptying its history and trying to sanitize it! Art captures the whole human experience -- leaving sex or physicality out of it is ... sigh
      That said, I do see your point -- we don't look at a statue or cathedral and comment on the attractiveness of the sculptors, and it would be ridiculous to reduce their work to one's subjective opinion on the attractiveness of the artist's body.
      However, this commentary should have some place here because, Surprise! I'm providing you with another free art lesson: This CZcams video, this medium intentionally employed and deployed with staging, editing, camera work, etc. is itself an art work. The artist (the sculptor) is also the subject -- it's his hands carving it, his body heaving it, his brow concentrating, etc. Except that it's a video, he is a living sculpture, if you will. A body which bears a resemblance to what one might see in classical greek or roman statuary. The commentary from @topaventador4064 is entirely fair play, much like one could comment on the rendering of the hair or fabric of classical sculpture.

In this case the stones were already there and some had to be cut, which the Japanese mason found a terrible waste. Watching and learning from Japanese culture and tradition makes one realize how terribly wasteful modern life is in every aspect, only in our personal lives we can make different choices.

    It does make sense though, because each step is a reference for the next step and a sloppy first step will cascade into an absolute mess at the end. It just seems crazy to chisel a perfectly flat and square face only to smash it all away later. That’s just the name of the game though, no one ever said stonework would be easy! Haha

    Hello Charlie, I'm new to your channel and I really like your videos.
    I have wondered where have you learned this ? In a school or some books ?
    I would really love to learn it ❤.

      Wood would be a lot more expensive than these limestone blocks. Plus you have grain in wood so techniques would be quite dissimilar. Only the art would carry over

    Loving the work, very cool! I so wish more young people in my area took to a beautiful heritage skit like yours. Very nice.

      It's not a long term job if you want to be healthy when you get older.
      White fingers, respiratory, carpal tunnel syndrome, silicosis ( depending on the materials).
      Obviously you can avoid some of these things with proper PPE but there's a risk no matter what.

      @@praxusjoon2478 yes even limestone has silica in it, albeit it's about 2% or less but over time it builds up.
      Marbles can have from 5% up to 30% depending on the marble.

    my biggest curiosity is how often do you hit blocks that have a structural weakness you didn't know about before starting? do you do all your own sourcing of blocks and how many projects have you lost due to material failures?

    • @RemnantDiscipleLazzaro-Rev1217
      @RemnantDiscipleLazzaro-Rev1217 Před 9 měsíci +2

      I would presume if that were to happen of a structural weakness, they compensate for the problem or get a new block. From what i know about marble, it's not common to have a structural weakness, i would presume we have machines now that might be used to scan the rock for problems to reduce any structural weakness issues.

    • @Kholdaimon
      @Kholdaimon Před 9 měsíci +1

      Michelangelo would have all those tools, the steel would be of lesser quality of course, so he either required to re-sharpen them more often or just switch to a new chisel more frequently while an assistant re-sharpened his tools. I know nothing about stone-sculpting, but it is obvious that after millennia of sculpting stone there would have been an enormous variety of chisels developed for every possible purpose and type of stone, as well as different hammer types.

    • @resurgam_b7
      @resurgam_b7 Před 9 měsíci +4

      @@rw-vr6vw Similar to how every chip of stone removed from the block was done so by the hand of the skilled craftsman, a blacksmith would have formed each tooth on the rasp by hand. Starting with a flat bar of metal (that they had previously formed from an ingot) and using a chisel very similar to the ones on display here (though of a different shape and size obviously), he would cut each tooth, then when that step was finished, he would bend the rasp into the desired shape and harden the metal. Ancient people took patience to a whole other level than most people could tolerate today 😂
