    Installing torque converters on our baja warrior mini bikes. We test rode these mini bikes with the stock jackshaft system just to confirm that it sucked and torque converters were worth it. Our suspicions were correct. So I toss them and install New torque converters on both. The engines had to be lifted and modified to clear the new torque converters and modifications made to make them fit but it was worth it. And one even got a fire extinguisher gas tank in the process.
    Parts:
    Torque converter: 3/4" TAV2 - amzn.to/2XWOxEQ
    Chain: RK #420 chain - amzn.to/2L4opCT
    #420 connecting link - amzn.to/2qTa5X1

    I had a buddy of mine grind off the original welds from the original plate and weld it back up all the way around. The 2 sides and rear of the plate. The 2 front welds tacked on my baja but there was no damage to the plate.

      Is there a chance it could fit with no lift or grinding?

      5/16 fine thread. Standard retaining bolt size on 3/4" shaft engines. The Colemans come with an oddball crankshaft that uses a nut.

      Stop worrying about the motor and get the torque converter you see in this video. If you would have watched the entire video you would have seen that he has a 5.5.

      My apologies Michael T. Wood. It did have 5.5 on the blower housing at the end of the video. I assumed it had a 5.5.

    I have one of these clone torque converters newly installed and it spins the rear tire at idle. None of the Googled reasons for what might cause this make any sense.

    • @pfun41
      @pfun41  Před 3 lety +1

      With it off the ground? I wouldn't worry about that. If it tries to move while on the ground it may be installed incorrectly.

    • @thenexthobby
      @thenexthobby Před 3 lety

      @@pfun41 I don't really see much opportunity to install this incorrectly. Everything appears to be in order. It would help to know what to EXPECT at idle ---- >> ... does the belt turn but the rear pulley does not, or does the belt not turn until the clutch spins faster?
      On the ground it won't start if the outer clutch cover (aka driver pulley cover) is on. It's like a direct drive. I really don't know what purpose that piece serves, given that the outer bolt holder is already keyed to the crankshaft. A "theory of operation" would help here.
      I've already lowed the idle so low it barely runs but that didn't help here. But at least there I can hit the rear break and not kill the engine in the process.
      When revved, once the clutch really kicks in to squeeze against the belt more, I can see the belt "raise up" within the clutch as you'd expect, but then the outer part of the belt shreds. It's a "669" belt that came with the kit. www.amazon.com/dp/B08DQXSR31?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

      What's interesting is that most of the info out there regarding things such as belt tension are for go-karts, which separate the drive pulley from the driven pulley. Here of course, that distance is known (and fixed) since there's a common plate they won't allow the two pulleys to be at the wrong distance.

    • @pfun41
      @pfun41  Před 3 lety

      @@thenexthobby Ive found the engagement RPM to be HIGHER with TCs. Meaning the engine revs higher before it starts moving. It sounds like your belt is too tight. It could be backwards or its possible the wrong mounting bolts have been used making the belt too tight.

    • @thenexthobby
      @thenexthobby Před 3 lety

      @@pfun41 Thanks. I checked and the belt is not on backwards. As for being too tight, the distance between the 2 pulleys is of course fixed since they share the common mounting plate. In my case it acts more like it's an issue of the drive pulley prematurely pinching it, like there needs to be an additional spacer between both sheaves. I'll poke around some more.

    Did it have a 10 tooth to a 20 tooth jackshaft, then a 10 tooth to a 50 tooth? That's 10/1 gearing. Why would you think it sucks? I have that gearing on one of my Colemans and it's great for slow speed riding. Nice low end. What engine do you have?

    • @pfun41
      @pfun41  Před 4 lety

      No low end torque, no high speed. Clutches knock trying to get moving. I don't know what tooth count it had I just know it sucked. I took them to a mini bike event in Tennessee and they were flying up 45* hills while the clutched mini bikes were struggling. At the time of the video they both had 196cc Honda clones, but one had a predator 212 swapped in.
