  • In this video we bring back our Craigslist mini bikes for an epic comparison to truly answer the question of if you should remove the governor in your mini bike or not. To begin the video we did a preliminary drag race as well as a top speed run with both of the completely stock bikes, then after that we took them back to the garage in order to show you how to remove the governor as well as look for some ways to get some free power out of the harbor freight engine. After removing the governor, we put it back of the bike and re-did the tests, this time with it side by side the other orange bike so the true speed difference throughout the power band could be seen.
    Thank you guys for watching and be sure to subscribe to see this mini bike transform into a c10 look alike!

    To everyone planning on governor removal, would highly advise getting a billet flywheel. Those stock flywheels do explode when ungoverned

      I've heard this is only an issue if you change the valve springs to stiffer springs, as at about 4800rpm or so the valves float and restrict really moving higher. I've heard this more than a few times on CZcams and forums however i have not removed mine yet to really see. I've got a predator 79cc and a Tecumseh h35 and will admit the flywheel on the h35 is alot more solid looking. may try with that.

      why not forged steel rod then, more robust and had High Fatigue range, not like alu does, easily fatigue cause it's was alu, even rod had silicon on it.

      CM .265" cam, 1.3 rockers on NON hemi engine= .345" lift at valve with 26# springs. that is the most lift some believe that does any good without RADICAL head work (welding/machining of head). port/smooth intake/exhaust, remove "step" from bowl to tract. dimple intake port like golf ball to keep flow turbulent to mix air/fuel going into motor. Billet rod as all is for naught if rod breaks and ruins motor. $65 for std, .020" or .040" longer BILLET ROD. extra jets for carb... to get light tan plug, not black plug from too much gas not enough fuel= backfire thru exhaust as unburned gas out exhaust pipe gets air and explodes, annoying. E 85... with A LOT BIGGER JETS as alchol doesn't have the BTU's of gas, methanol. that is hard on rubber parts and not recommended per sticker on the motor... NO E 85. a little 2 smoke oil in the gas to lubricate things better? 1:100 ratio?

      if going to open up the sidecover to do the gov removal... might as well have the $45 CM .265" lift cam ready to put in there, 26# springs ($8/pair), cut 3/8" off oil dipper on rod cap so it doesn't hit the bottom of the motor when u are SCREAMING the motor and break off the rod cap/ruins the motor. $65 for Billet rod isn't too bad though, have to have 12 Point 10 mm socket and HF $10 torque wrench (with coupon) oil on the threads and under the bolt head so don't get false torque readings when torqing the bolts/nuts to recommended torque. 17 ft /lbs is the torque for the side cover bolts and the head bolts... unless use head studs then 23 Ft/lbs of torque in a criss cross pattern. .009 head gasket, PORT the head STAY AWAY FROM VALVE SEATS!!!!!!!!! they are HARD... but not that hard. the ticket, some think, is the NON hemi head on the HEMI block and its flat top piston for better compression. the NON hemi head flows well enough, but ppl hear HEMI and think... WOOOOOO HOOOOO 1000 more HP!!!!! EVERYONE KNOWS THAT... but the WEDGE head is not a bad head on the NON hemi engine. on those mini bikes... they cum with 196cc engine... the STANDARD is the PREDATOR 212cc engine and that is what HOT ROD PARTS are available for to the MAX. the 196cc???? I don't know... I don't think it takes HEMI parts???? might take NON hemi parts... run it til it blows up and then get PREDATOR 212 @ HF with coupon for $107 OTD (out the door). break in for 3 hours on home made test stand out of 4- 2' long 1x1" legs and a 1' square table top out of plywood... with a shelf under it for tools/oil/parts/etc. change oil after 30 mins. several 5 minute easy runs to heat/cool cycles.... then gradually WIND IT UP... I could wait that long... before my fat finger was under the gas tank overriding the governor and the E bay tach was reading.... 5800.... 6000RPM's. but reading on karting.4cycle.com PREDATORS... ppl say that valves bounce off the seat at 5400 rpm and that is as fast as it will go with stock springs. they make 12.8# HD springs for a little more UMPH... or 12.8# (on the seat) springs 12.8i (improved) for stock karting applications that may or may not pass tech inspection. 22# springs for 6500 but max lift is .... .315" at valve? 26# springs max lift is ~ .415" @ valve but HARD to get the keepers in without that 3rd hand and arm to push down spring and get the keepers ON THE VALVE stem and not have the spring SHOOT the keepers... in your eye... across the room... never to be seen again... unless in ur eye. safety glasses are cheap, glass eyes and seeing eye dogs are generally cumbersome and don't work as well as ... normal eyes.

    the comet torq-a-verter was the best mod i ever did to mine. you have variable gear ratios- which will make you faster (top speed) and quicker (acceleration). plus it keeps the engine under 3600rpm, and if you do any longer rides you can cruise in overdrive which is a lot more comfortable than screaming along at 4500rpm.

    I went through a time where I was trying to figure out the same questions. How to have a carburetor to run under boost and a carburetor to run under atmospheric pressure. The whole solution of putting a carburetor in a can full of pressure works great but how to run without it. I finally came to the conclusion that it was much more complex than just figuring out how to run it with fuel injection. That was all on a old 1970 BMW motorcycle that I had a 1981 L engine in that was pretty trick. It put out about 100 horsepower unboosted but of course...

I'm thinking wtf all they had to do was disconnect the linkage from the carburetor to the gov and that's it, now it's a major to put it back to original if you don't want it to blow up, as the rev limiter stops the oil flying out too far and away from the big end bearing.

    The new MegaMoto 212 Pro series bike has hydraulic disk front and rear brakes ! They reportedly work well.
    That is mind blowing ! This will increase the stopping power by 300 percent ! There is nothing ever that could
    so dramatically affect safety. I would say it will reduce stopping distances to one third or less of the back wheel
    only drum brake. SO the big question is: IS the Chinese source of the MegaMoto the same as the old MiniBaha
    and if so there is a very good possibility that the front forks interchange in dimension and fit etc. This means a half million
    of the Mini Baja bikes sold in the last 15 years could be converted to include at least include the added feature of
    hydraulic front brakes added. I believe the current incarnation of the Mini Baja is called the TrailMaster but not absolutely
    sure they have the same source. It just looks very much like they share parts.

    That governor wasn't put there by some old man saying "Slow down!".
    It was put there so that the engine wouldn't rev higher than it was designed to.
    That extra 3 mph will greatly shorten the engines life.

    • @Deucealive75
      @Deucealive75 Před 4 lety +1

      That's not exactly a true statement. The governor is there as a means of automatic throttle control. It will react to changes in load at a fixed throttle position. Not allowing too high a rev is just a nice side note to their functionality.
      These engines were not designed for mini bikes and go karts. They are utility engines that are used to power equipment that do not have top speed and high RPM in mind. 3600 RPM has been a standard for decades and the engines are designed around that RPM. With the governor fine tuning screw you can set the governor to react at a multiple range of RPM values at full throttle including RPM higher than 3600. The governor will even react to a change in load at any fixed throttle position. It's not there for full throttle only. With the Honda designed throttle arrangement on these engines the governor is responsible for closing the throttle to idle at the moment of startup after the choke is manually opened. Yes, the governor does function at idle.
      The governors automatic operation is not very desirable in a variable throttle application like a mini bike or go karts where people want full control over their throttle. This full control allows higher RPM's than a governed engine would allow and is the reason people want to disable or remove them.

      the governor Is there to meet epa grandfather standards. other bike like the yamaha tw 200 and the old Honda off road mopeds. they met minimum pollution standards in 1984. and because they've had no changes in motor design the do not have to comply with modern standards. and China does not give any fucks , and has been copying small Honda motors for 50 ÷ years

    got side cover off might as well put in a CM 265" cam, 1.3 rockers on NON hemi engine, 26# springs, longer BILLET ROD to see 6500RPMs+ header with scooter muffler, bigger jet in (390cc) carb (depending on elevation, check plug... black plug =too much gas/not enough air=wasted gas), light tan plug is what we are looking for. white plug is too lean/runs hot/burns up motor. port head with dremel grinder and 80 grit sanding drums to open up intake/exhaust port and ease valve bowl to intake tract "Step" so air flows free. NON hemi head doesn't seem to run into coil bind with the coils being compressed to MAX and breaking valve/retainer and dropping valve into the motor... ruining the motor. 26# springs good for ~.425" lift? 22# springs good for ~.325" lift? depending on casting as all are a lil different. BILLET rod .020" oversize ? to get piston to 0 deck height. .009 Head gasket (stock on NON hemi engine) so have ~.030" piston to head clearance. Billet flywheel if expect over .... 5500 RPMs? $120 for a flywheel for $100 motor???? epoxy magnet and holder to the flywheel so magnet doesn't fly out /off like a bullit... but 5.x # flywheel exploding cant be good to anyone within 100'+++ . 3/16" plate steel tween motor and operator? HEMI engine with HIGH LIFT cams might run into piston because of canted valves on HEMI, less of a problem with NON hemi engine which many believe is a better head than the HEMI head? who wud have thought?

    Torque converter will fix that low speed snail acceleration. Better yet, go to Harbor Freight and put one of those 22 horsepower V-twins on it with a real gas tank. There's another bike similar to that one, I think it's called the monster dog. Same set up but it has rear suspension, luggage rack, single down tube up front. I've always wanted one of these bikes but I would modify it by installing a rear drum brake system on the front. Might as well go all out and install a headlight, tail light, brake light, mirror, and turn signals, stretch out the frame to make a 2 seater with that V twin motor, a little larger diameter tires. Go crazy.

    • @fastnasty6627
      @fastnasty6627 Před 5 lety

      Speed determined by rpm not horsepower, add more power/ torque change to higher gearing and get more speed. If maxed governed rpm is the same the power doesn't do anything for speed just acceleration to top speed. So it will be quicker but same top end.

    If you simply take out the governor and leave everything else stock, you will probably dramatically shorten the life of the engine. Quite a number of internal parts need to be changed out for the engine to survive the higher rpm. A brain is a terrible thing to waste, wear a helmet and strap it on properly, long pants and a long sleeve shirt and gloves are a good idea also, we have a saying in motorcycling, "All the gear, all the time", its good advice.

    My mini bike when i was a kid went 35 mph. I was 10-12 when i had it,2 998 so i would have been way lighter so that would explain the couple mph difference. Idk if the gov was taken off it by the people i bought it from but id did go faster than my go kart with the same engine. And i did blow it up once having it wide open rippin down the train tracks for a long distance, it seized up on me. Back than i didnt know anything about a gov but lookin back on it now, i dont think it had one. Shit, i even used fishing string as the throttle cable lol. Run about 4 or 5 strands of high test thru the cable housing and you got yourself a cheap diy throttle cable. It does wear down and break, but it will last a long time. If it does break run more strands than previously before.

    Removing the governor system will give more power but you should build the motor to be stronger on the internal parts like crankshaft gears and cams lifters push rods rocker arms connecting rod and piston and piston rings and a lighter flywheel to help prevent engine damage and use 15w-40 engine oil with Lucas oil stabilizer to better lubricant the engine with that much higher RPM’s.

      Its not a GX160/200 or a Briggs Animal. Its a Chinesium clone that cost $100. Valves will float at or around 5500 rpms, sounds like a high speed misfire, meaning its time to get off the gas. Conrods fail from incorrect oil levels. Flywheels......show me where one turned to shrapnel and ill buy ya a beer.

As you can imagine, a 50% increase in power is super awesome.

      @hezekiahjohnston8360 Před 5 lety +1

      popping out exhaust is from too rich a mixture of gas for elevation. over 3000' need SMALLER jets NOT larger jets as there isn't as much air at HIGH elevation so all that is happening is raw unburned gas is going out exhaust pipe and igniting when it gets more air. waste of gas. black plug = TOO MUCH gas/not enough air. carbs are jetted for sea level, the higher up in elevation a person is, the less air there is= motor runs rich/wastes gas. 26# springs, CM 265" cam, 1.3 rockers, Billet rod/flywheel, port heads, .009 head gasket (.030" min piston to head clearance). if going to open the motor up anyway, might as well have parts ready to swap out. easy to put $250 into $100 engine to make it GO!!!! Billet flywheel... $120 now???? in a $100 engine???? Billet rod $65 is acceptable as if rod breaks, ruins motor. 50mph+++ but how fast does a person want to go on something with small tires and limited brakes and little visibility to other motorists. what do ppl say when they run over someone on a bike.... "I DIDNT SEE THEM?!?!?!?) as she furiously texts on get GD phone that is surgically implanted to her hand at all times.
