It should be noted that if the wire and plug are purchased separately, the ridged wire attaches to the wide blade on the plug. This ensures that the "hot" wire gets disconnected when the switch is turned off, and not the neutral wire.

The knot is called an “Underwriters Knot”. In the event of a fire the underwriters will look for it.
