In this video I am making a cool modern/retro/mid-century modern floor lamp. I have wanted to design and build a floor lamp to accompany my Glenn Lounge Chair for a few years, and I felt like this was the perfect time to do it. This lamp is made from White Oak and also features some cool Brass details, and it was a lot of fun to make. So come along with me as I dive into making this lamp while exploring some interesting woodworking techniques.

Modern and retro. So… combine the two words… the Metro Lamp.
Forgot to say that for me, this is one of the nicest things you’ve ever made, Shaun. The fact that it didn’t swivel as nice as you wanted, doesn’t detract from how beautiful this piece of furniture is. A bloody nice job my good man 👌

I also made a lamp; it is funny to find out you used the exact method as I did to hide the wiring. Mine doesn't swivel however, I put some felts under the foot and turn it as a whole. Main difference is the fact that my lamp is height adjustable, it has one vertical part and the horizontal part can be inclined in fixed positions. I had to make the foot quite heavy, so I ordered some lead pallets. Just let me know if you'd like some photos.

I made a floor lamp last year in a mission style out of QS white oak and used a basic pendant lamp for the hardware and a color smart bulb to control with Alexa. I also wired a basic toggle switch just in case. For the shade I used an acrylic flower shade off Amazon. It looks like a hanging flower. The best part is you can change the color of the flower and brightness with a auditory command

I love this design, and it's awesome to watch the design and experimentation process unfold. It's honestly really encouraging to see examples of making a design work even when you're not 100% sure about everything before you start.
One or two ideas for future iterations:
    SWIVEL MECHANISM:
    - Replace the screw/washer swivel with an inlaid heavy-duty lazy susan bearing (or lazy shoesan 😉), topped with a brass plate to match the other fittings.
    - Provided the bearing swivels smoothly enough, replace the fixing knob with a strong neodymium magnet in the bottom of the arm, and corresponding magnets (also covered with thin brass) inlaid every X° along that front arc, to act as sort of soft positive stops (Mildly encouraging stops? Gently optimistic stops? Is there an actual name for it?)
    - If the weight of the lamp isn't centered on the bearing, you could add support with a small ball-wheel castor behind the arm-magnet. The wheel would roll along a shallow rounded groove routed into the base, reducing friction and keeping a small air gap between the arm and base magnets.
    LAMP/SHADE:
    - Add a solid vertical arm between the lamp and the top bar, so the lamp doesn't swing around so much every time it rotates.
    - The shade looks pretty opaque in the video but that may just be the camera, otherwise is it possible to get the veneer any thinner? I've seen lampshades made from laminated plane shavings that look lovely and translucent but it's a lot of work and you don't get that smooth face grain...

    • @shaunb66
      @shaunb66 Před 2 lety +1

Really appreciate it! And thanks for the suggestions. Not sure I will make another one of these, but maybe other lamps in the future. I have made lamp shades from lighter color wood (maple, oak, cherry) and the light shines through way more. I was a little bummed with how little it came through the walnut, but I guess that shouldn't have been a surprise.

    Hi Shaun.
    Super floor lamp.
I would have called it Modular.
For a smoother slide from side to side. I would have opted for a brass disc with a vertical upright edge. Both top and bottom of the sliding disc identical perhaps H 4mm in total edge height. Tightly fitted inside a silicone casing. Parallel to the channel with ample space to add wax for a smooth action.
Keep up the awesome designs. Love your work.
    Regards
    Bon 👣

@@shaunb66 Using nylon bushings around metal hardware is a good idea to reduce friction at those points of rotation. Also, felt can get "sticky" as it compresses, and it can hold moisture that attracts dust and make things harder on your finish. A thin piece of HDPE or acetyl/Delrin sheet would be smoother, equally unobtrusive, and pretty easy to retrofit. Great looking lamp! Can you share where you got the brass fittings for the bulb etc.? Thank you for your time.

Thanks Shaun, really looks cool. I really like the work you did adding the brass accents and the way you set up to mill each area. Took a second pass though to realize you had a red blade in your TS55. Can you tell me which one you use there? Thank you.

Not Shaun here, but the red blades you see a lot of people use on CZcams usually are Diablo saw blades. Some people think they are really high quality and even replace Festool blades with them. Have never used them, they aren't common in Europe.

I almost mentioned it in the video, but that was one of the things that inspired the shape for this one!

Really Cool lamp! If you make a design like that again, you should use Walnut to cover the cord.

Thanks! I thought about doing that, but felt like there was already enough going on.

@@shaunb66 that's true. The hidden aspect of the cord track is cool in it's own way.

Any chance you can share where you got the lamp hardware like the dimmer switch and socket. I really like that switch

Personally, I think the top would look slightly better of the brasss bar extended out the back end, and or if it had a cap of lighter wood above it.
