What does the closeness to the Russian border have to do with anything ? The oblast is legally part of Ukraine. And what makes one more legitimate than the other? Kharkov is the Russian anglicization, Kharkiv Ukrainian. Is there a "proper" English pronunciation? I'm really not sure. If you're going by the argument that they're all Russian speakers, why even bring up the English vs Japanese ? I'm really just confused what the intention is here, as if Kharkiv is an incorrect way of saying the name.
Sometimes it starts with a 'k', sometimes a 'h' sound. Sometimes the ending is an 'iv', sometimes an 'ov'.
Similar to Lviv/Lvov/Lvuv and plenty of other places it shows the location has a recent and also long history of different peoples/cultures. Like Poland's/Lithuania's/etc shifting borders, this is a region that has historically had major shifts in large powers conquering and leaving due to the geography of the region. It is a mostly flat region that is easily overrun by those in the East/West. Historically also the North and South have had a go also. Very hard to maintain as a separate entity and it isn't worth looking too hard at exact name pronunciations, but more about what makes sense for the people there and the broader region.

Im not american nor european. My country lacks of infrastructure and health and security. From a poor country point of view, this war is already lost for ukraine. Takes years to prepare soldiers to operate nato weapons and, as i see, nato wont place soldiers on the ground. The ukrainians are losing their lives while waiting for reinforcements that will neve arrive. Its a crime to convince these kids to fight and not help them out in the end. So sad.

It is not the truth, it is a Russian narrative. Just by calling Ukraine proxy reveals that the topic of the "discussion" is written in Moscow. Ukraine did not invade Russia - Russia invaded Ukraine.
